Whenever Alyssa Bhart heard a vice frm her cmputer repeatedly- status alert, status alert—the search was n. The warning came frm a radar device installed in Churchill, Manitba—a mdified (改进的) military system prgrammed with artificial intelligence (AI) and trained t detect plar bears.
Over the past fur years, the nnprfit Plar Bears Internatinal (PBI) has led radar, r “bear-dar”, tests t hpefully help nrthern cmmunities stay safe. Plar bears are pwerful predatrs, and fr peple in the Arctic, an essential part f cexisting with bears is maintaining a respectful distance. But with climate changes reducing sea ice, plar bears cnflicts are spending mre time n land. The chances f plar bears and humans cnflicts are increasing, which can have terrible cnsequences fr bth parties.
The prject came int being when PBI was lking fr new ways t prevent human-plar bear cnflicts. A chance meeting with SptterRF, a cmpany that makes military radar devices, gave them an idea: maybe they culd use the radar system t detect plar bears heading tward twns and send ut an early warning.
In their initial tests, the researchers discvered that “the technlgy wrks great”, says Geff Yrk, FBI’s senir directr f cnservatin. “If anything, it detects t much.” The radar turned ut t send thusands f mtin alerts. S in 2020, the team turned t AI t try t narrw dwn the hits. “By incrprating this AI, we are truly teaching this radar t learn what a plar bear is,” says Alysa McCall, a staff scientist with PBI.
This past fall, the team psitively identified 28 plar bears and had 89 alerts that didn’t turn ut t be bears. McCall says their gals is t have mre psitive identificatins than negative. In rare events, the team nticed plar bears, either n the camera r in persn, that the bear-dar didn’t identify. In thse cases, the tw mst cnfusing variables fr the bear-dar were variatins in the bears’ sizes, and the directin the bears were walking in relatin t the radar. “We are nt quite there yet. But I think the results have prved we have a gd directin f where t g with the AI,” says MeCall.

A decade ag, at the end f my first semester teaching at Captain, my student Jack stpped by fr ffice hurs. He sat dwn and burst int tears. My mind started cycling thrugh a list f events that culd make a cllege junir cry: His girlfriend had brken up with him; he had been accused f cheating in exams; he frgt t turn in papers befre the deadline. "I just gt my first A minus," he said.
Year after year, I watch in depressin as students are crazy abut getting straight A's. Sme sacrifice their health; a few have even tried t charge their schl after failure. They believe tp marks are a ticket t elite graduate schls and rewarding jb pprtunities. I was ne f them. I started cllege with the gal f graduating with a GPA f 4.0. It wuld be a reflectin f my brainpwer and willpwer, shwing that I had the right things t succeed. But I was wrng.
The evidence is clear: Acrss industries, research shws that the assciatin between grades and jb perfrmance is mdest in the first year after cllege and insignificant within a handful f years. Fr example, at Micrsft, nce emplyees are tw r three years ut f cllege, their grades have nthing t d with their perfrmance.( Of curse, it must be said that if yu gt D's, yu prbably wuldn't end up at Micrsft.)
Academic grades rarely assess qualities like creativity, leadership and teamwrk skills, r scial, emtinal and plitical intelligence. Yes, straight A students master large amunts f infrmatin and reprduce it in exams. But career success is rarely abut finding the right slutin t a prblem—it's mre abut finding the right prblem t slve. This might explain why Steve Jbs finished high schl with a GPA f 2.65, and Martin Luther King Jr. gt nly ne A in his fur years at Mrehuse.
    12.Why did Jack feel sad?
A.His girlfriend abandned him.B.He was caught cheating in exams.
C.He failed t get straight A's.D.He didn't hand in his paper in time.
13.What did the authr nce believe?
A.It was wrng t care t much abut marks.B.Failure was schls' fault.
C.Marks didn't reflect willpwer and brainpwer.D.Tp marks meant well-paid jb ffers.
14.Why are the emplyees at Micrsft mentined?
A.T indicate academic perfrmance is imprtant.
B.T stress the cmpany values emplyees with tp marks.
C.T intrduce successful examples in the technlgy industry.
D.T shw academic excellence isn't a strng predictr f career perfrmance.
15.What shuld peple fcus mre n t succeed?
    A.Hw t slve a prblem.B.What prblem t be slved.
    C.Hw t be a creative leader.D.What t d with detailed infrmatin.

Hwever, we have t say that technlgy can be a duble-edged swrd. Nwadays, instead f paying attentin t the cnversatin we are having face t face, we just take the phne. We are distracted by smartphnes and technlgy in general. But we can’t blame technlgy. We shuld nt blame urselves, either. 20 Indeed, technlgy is addictive, but ur fcus shuldn’t be n phnes r cmputers, but n peple and face-t-face cnversatins.
