The daughter f a rmantic pet and ccasinal freedm fighter, Ada Lvelace had a famus but absent father. She never knew Lrd Byrn, as just weeks after her birth in 1815, he divrced her mther Isabella Milbanke Byrn and left t fight in the Greek War f Independence. In an effrt t prevent Ada frm develping her father’s unpredictable temper, Isabella decided that her daughter shuld devte her life t study.
Ada studied hard despite the fact that sciety did nt encurage wmen pursuing interests in science. Her life changed when she met inventr Charles Babbage at a party. As he demnstrated a wrking sectin f his mechanical calculatr, Ada was taken in by hw it wrked and wanted t knw mre. Impressed by the 17-year-ld’s bvius passin, Babbage became her tutr. Ada married in 1835 and became a mther, but she cntinued t take an active interest in study, scialising in intellectual circles with the likes f Charles Dickens and Michael Faraday.
Ada stayed in cntact with Babbage, wh in 1837 had prpsed a new machine, the analytical engine. In 1843, Ada was asked t translate a French text written by engineer Luigi Menabrea abut Babbage’s new design. After cmpleting the translatin, Ada was encuraged by Babbage t write her wn ntes n his wrk.
After nine mnths f hard wrk, Ada presented Babbage with a detailed list f ntes that was three times lnger than the riginal article. In her calculatins, Ada wrte what are cnsidered the first ever cmputer algrithms t be used in a new type f machine. She essentially prvided the first ideas fr cmputer prgramming in what was a grundbreaking prpsal n the ptential f cmputers.
Ada died f cancer aged nly 36 and her wrk was largely recgnised until the 1950s when her ntes were republished. In 1979 the US Department f Defence named a prgramming language ‘Ada’ in her hnur.

One f the mst curius features f the mdern wrld is the manner in which design has been widely transfrmed int smething meaningless. But I want t argue design shuld be the crucial blck n which the human envirnment is shaped and cnstructed fr the betterment and delight f all.
Nt surprisingly, in the absence f widespread agreement abut its significance and value, much cnfusin surrunds design practice. In sme subject areas, authrs can assume cmmn grund with readers. Other subject areas can be s difficult that h such mutual understanding exists.
Design sits uncmfrtably between these tw extremes. As a wrd it is cmmn enugh, but it is full f disharmny, has innumerable manifestatins (表现), and lacks bundaries that give clarity and definitin. As a practice, design generates vast quantities f material, much f it ephemeral, nly a small prprtin f which has sustained quality.
S hw can design be understd in a meaningful sense? Design is ne f the basic characteristics f what it is t be human, and an essential determinant f the quality f human life. If things are a necessary part f ur existence, why are they ften dne s badly? There is n simple answer. Cst factrs are smetimes advanced, but the remve between ding smething well r badly can be exceedingly small, and cst factrs can in fact be reduced by apprpriate design inputs.
This bk is based n a belief that design matters prfundly t us all in innumerable ways and represents an area f huge, underutilized ptential in life. It sets ut t explre sme reasns why this is s and t suggest sme pssibilities f change. The intentin is t extend the range f what is understd by the term, and examine the depth f design practice as it affects everyday life in a diversity f cultures.
8.What is paragraph 2 f the text mainly abut?
    A.The causes f cnfusin.B.The significance f design.
C.The differences in subjects.D.The cmmn grund in peple.
9.What des the underlined wrd “ephemeral” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Meaningful.B.Enrmus.C.Shrt-lived.D.Hard-wearing.
10.What d we knw abut design?
A.Design is just abut arts r trends.
B.Cst factrs accunt fr inadequate design.
C.The authr argues that design is meaningless .
D.Very few are incapable f imprvement by prper design.
11.What is the bk aimed at?
A.Reducing design inputs.B.Persisting in meaningful design practices.
C.Denying previus cnceptin f design.D.Clarifying the cnfusin surrunding design.
    D
Time and time again, I hear smene ask why anyne wuld want t keep an “ugly” building r a building that is dirty and clearly in need f wrk. I think yu culd say we preservatinists (文物保护者) lk at buildings thrugh a different angle — an angle that can see the swan in the ugly duck, the stry in the simple lines, the bk behind the cver.
Take the Queen Emma Building fr example. While peple may remember that building being named as ne f the ugliest buildings in twn, the angle frm which a preservatinist will view the building is that it is uniquely cnstructed with an artistical brise-sleil (遮阳板) t blck the sun. The designer used standard cncrete bricks t frm a decrative wall. Unfrtunately, the brise-sleil was remved in 2011, making the building lk like many f the cntemprary buildings in twn.
Smetimes peple remember a beautiful site that was replaced by a “very unpleasant” piece f architecture and can’t get ver their anger, even when that building becmes an imprtant part f ur stry. This is particularly true in San Francisc where many preservatinists themselves dislike anything newer, than the Victrian era. Yes, it was a tragedy that many failed t appreciate the Victrian buildings and let many get tm dwn several decades ag, but thse lsses als tell anther imprtant stry. It tells the stry f the 1950s and 1960s when there was hpe fr a mre equal sciety with inexpensive husing fr the wrking class. Shuld that histry be wiped frm ur memries?
Preservatin is nt just abut keeping pretty, well-kept buildings, but abut cnveying pars f ur histry — nt just the histry f huge events, but the stry f hw everyne used t g t a certain crner market. Our histry cannt be tld nly in buildings that meet smene’s criteria f beauty; smetimes ur histry is painful, but n less imprtant.
    12.Hw d preservatinists see buildings?
A.They fcus n their value rather than appearance.
B.They pay great attentin t ancient buildings.
C.They are devted t repairing famus buildings.
D.They prefer ugly buildings t beautiful nes.
13.What des the authr think f remving the brise-sleil f the Queen Emma Building?
    A.It’s cnfusing.B.It’s pleasing.
    C.It’s regrettable.D.It’s unbelievable.
14.Why were many Victrian buildings in San Francisc tm dwn?
A.T wipe the histry f the Victrian era.
B.T make land available fr cheap husing.
C.T wrk ff the deep anger f the wrking class.
D.T restre the architecture befre the Victrian era.
15.What is the authr’s intentin f writing this passage?
A.T intrduce sme buildings with histrical value.
B.T explain the reasn why architects make ugly buildings.
C.T praise the wrk f preservatinists.
D.T stress the imprtance f preserving ugly buildings.
