Like a tired marriage, the relatinship between libraries and publishers has lng been dull. E-bks, hwever, are causing heartache. Libraries knw they need digital wares if they are t remain relevant, but many publishers are t cautius abut piracy (盗版) and lst sales t cperate. Amng the big six, nly Randm Huse and Harper Cllins license e-bks with mst libraries.
Publishers are wise t be nervus. Owners f e-readers are exactly the custmers they need: bk- lvers with mney. If these peple switch t brrwing e-bks instead f buying them, what then? Electrnic brrwing is awfully cnvenient. Unlike printed bks, e-bk files can be dwnladed at hme frm digital libraries anytime. The files disappear frm the device when they are due autmatically. Awkwardly fr publishers, buying an e-bk csts mre than renting ne but ffers little extra value.
E-lending is nt simple, hwever. There are lts f different and ften incmpatible (不兼容的) e-bk frmats, devices and licenses. Mst libraries use a cmpany called OverDrive, which secures rights frm publishers and prvides e-bks and audi files in every frmat. Yet publishers and libraries are wrried by OverDrive’s glbal market dminance, as the cmpany can cntrl fees and cnditins. Publishers were annyed when OverDrive teamed up with Amazn, the wrld’s biggest nline bkseller, last year. Owners f Amazn’s Kindle e-reader wh want t brrw e-bks frm libraries are nw redirected t Amazn’s website, where Amazn fllws up library frequenters directly, letting them knw they can “Buy this bk” when the lan falls due.
Accrding t Pew, an pinin researcher, library users are a perfect market fr Amazn. Late last year Amazn intrduced its Kindle Owners’ Lending Library, which lets its best custmers brrw free ne f thusands f ppular bks each mnth.
Library supprters argue that bk brrwers are als bk buyers and that libraries are vital spaces fr readers t discver new wrks. Many were cheered by a recent Pew survey which fund that mre than half f Americans with library cards say they prefer t buy their e-bks. S, publishers keep adjusting their lending arrangements in search f the right balance. Randm Huse raised its licensing prices earlier this year, and Harper Cllins limits libraries t lending its titles 26 times.
8. What can be inferred frm Paragraph 1?
A. Many publishers are hesitant t license e-bks.
B. The library-publisher relatinship has been unstable.
C. Libraries and publishers hld the same view twards e-bks.
D. Randm Huse and Harper Cllins are the tp tw publishers.
9. Why are publishers wrried abut electrnic brrwing?
A. There may be a nticeable drp in prfit.
B. Rights fr publishers can’t be secured any lnger.
C. E-bks can be dwnladed again when they are due.
D. E-bks and their audi files are prvided in every frmat.
10. What can we learn frm the text?
A. Amazn is adpting measures t win mre custmers.
B. E-bks can be lent at libraries as many times as yu like.
C. OverDrive distributes e-bks and audi files t publishers.

A. Reading Online r OfflineB. A Marriage-like Relatinship
C. A Bright Future fr PublishersD. A Tense Stry Raised by E-bks

When yu’re wrking yur way thrugh ne f life’s strms, it is human nature t fcus n getting back t nrmal, t “bunce back” as quickly as pssible t a place where things are calm, familiar and cmfrtable.
Hwever, actually it is unrealistic t think we can ever truly return emtinally and intelligently t where we were befre the strm because every experience changes us in sme way. Fr example, when we experience a majr health scare, pssibly invlving sme hspital time, we can never g back t being the persn we were befre the event even if we fully recver because we have experienced firsthand the fragility(脆弱) f life, nt t mentin cming face t face with death.
S, nw that we can never return, what shuld we d?
Cnsider this …hw is it that tw peple can be faced with the same hardship and while ne becmes hpeless and feels anger and upset, the ther is able t vercme their circumstances and grw strnger than ever as a result f the experience?
At ne extreme, we may chse t accept the rle f unlucky victim, r becme trapped in the “Why is it always me!” negative and frustrating(令人沮丧的) situatins. Either way is the result f a fixed mindset(思维模式) that is resistant t grwth and change. If this is yur apprach t life, yu will be far less likely t be active in effectively managing change and recvering frm bad situatins.
But there is anther chice. If yu are hnest enugh, yu may cnsider what was nce “nrmal” fr yu was just the main cause f yur strm. Yu can chse t hug change and uncertainty and learn t grw frward thrugh all f yur experiences. Of curse, this means ding the wrk t develp the skills and habits that will enable yu t handle life’s ccasinal strms.
In cnclusin, it is up t each f us t chse the meaning we apply t ur situatins at all times. Different chices will lead t different lives. Of curse yu can grw frward if yu are determined t chse live a psitive life regardless f whatever hardships yu are facing.
12. What des the authr try t cnvey with the example in the secnd paragraph?
A. We will understand life much better after an escape frm death.
B. It usually takes a lng time t recver frm a health prblem.
C. It’s unlikely t return t where we were after certain events.
D. We can recver frm an emtinal prblem much mre easily.
13. When faced with hardships, sme peple chse t be a victim because f ________.
A. their terrible experiencesB. their negative thughts
C. their pr healthD. their bad luck
14 What is the authr’s purpse in writing the text?
A. T advise us t manage bad emtins.
B. T persuade us t get back t nrmal.
C. T ffer us useful skills t wrk with.
D. T encurage us t vercme hardships.
15. If yu’re determined t grw frward yu have t ________.
A. experience life’s fragilityB. welcme uncertainty and change
C. develp new skills and habitsD. vercme the fear f death
