The team behind the laughing rbt Erica said that the system culd imprve natural cnversatins between peple and an AI rbt. “We think that ne f the imprtant functins f cnversatinal AI is empathy(共情),” said Dr Kji Inue, the lead authr f the research. “S we decided that ne way a rbt can empathize with its users is t share their laughter.”
    The team have set ut t teach their AI system the art f cnversatinal laughter. They gathered training data frm mre than 80 daily dialgues between male subjects and the rbt that was initially perated by fur actresses remtely. The dialgue data was gruped int scial laughs (where plite r embarrassed laughter isn’t invlved) and laughter f jy. Based n the audi files, the algrithm(算法) learned the basic characteristics f scial laughs, which tend t be sfter, and merry laughs, with the aim f mirrring these inapprpriate situatins.
    “Our biggest bstructr in the wrk was identifying the actual cases f shared laughter because as yu knw, mst laughter is actually nt shared at all,” said Inue. “We had t carefully decide exactly which laughs we culd use fr ur analysis and we culdn’t just assume that any laugh can be respnded t. It was really nt easy wrk.” The team said laughter culd help create rbts with their wn distinct character althugh it culd take mre than 20 years befre it wuld be pssible t have a casual chat with a rbt like we wuld with a friend.
