    Kenny Lake Schl in Cpper Center, Alaska, is small. Jennifer Hdges is a third, furth and fifth grade teacher. She says her three-grade class sits nly at desks fr 20 minutes a day. They d a lt f practical learning, such as raising Ch salmn(鲑鱼) frm egg t yung fish and then releasing them int a lake.
    It’s thrugh a prgram called Salmn in the Classrm, established by the Alaska Department f Fish and Game. Many students already have experience fishing salmn, which is a staple(主食) in Native Alaskan cmmunities. “It’s really a delicate balance because we are dealing with traditins and culture f the Native peple,” Hdges says. “This is their land, this is their salmn. And s we have t really be part f that.”
    During the mnths when the salmn are in the classrm, students like t sit by the tank t bserve. They like t calculate when the salmn will turn frm eggs t yung fish based n the temperature f the tank. T them, it’s nt practicing math prblems: it’s predicting the future.
    “We always take a guess at when they will hatch frm their eggs first,” says Liam, a student. “It takes math because yu have t keep track f their temperature and calculate. I’m gd at math s I usually get it right.”
    Since Hdges and her students live in such a rural area, there aren’t many field trips. But each year in May, she takes her students n the Salmn Field Trip, where they get t release the salmn they’ve raised in class.
    They will name the fish, then release them int the wild and never see them again. But it’s nt sad: it’s the highlight f the year. “The best part is getting t release them after watching them hatch frm eggs, grw up and take care f them,” says Fisher, a student.
    “The salmn have turned frm being just fish that they catch t eat, t fish that they are cnnecting t,” says Hdges. “With this prject, they have a whle different perspective.”
