Buying these unfrtunate-lking fds shuld be appealing t cnsumers nt nly because f the affrdability, but als because f the supprt it gives t farmers and the direct impact it has n decreasing fd waste and the envirnmental pllutin. It is believed that when the discarded fruits and vegetables decmpse they release methane, a greenhuse gas that, when released int the atmsphere, is abut 86 times as pwerful as carbn dixide ver a 20-year perid. Sme f them therized that it was pssible that female mths judged the health and quality f a male by the size f his tails. But it turned ut that female mths were nt chsy at all. They just mate with the first males they culd find. Others believed that the tails culd increase luna mths’ size t make them harder fr the bats-the main enemy f luna mths—t handle. But the thery prved wrng in 1903 when a scientist named Archibald Weeks put bats against a bigger species f mths that lacked tails. He fund that the bats killed 66% f their targets. Luna mths, despite being smaller, were harder t catch. “Clearly, their tails prvided an anti-bat advantage,” Weeks bserved. “I think they were used t direct bats away frm the mths’ bdy.”
He was rughly right. Mre than a century later, Jesse Barber frm Bise State University put luna mths against bats in a dark rm and filmed the hunting. Under nrmal circumstances, the bats nly managed t catch 35% f the luna mths. But if Barber cut ff their tails befrehand, the bats caught 81% f them. That was nt because the mths became wrse fliers—in fact, cutting the trublesme tails seemed t have imprved their flying abilities.
Barber explained that bats were nt visual hunters. They fund their fd with a special sund. T be prtected frm bats, luna mths needed smething that made cnfusing sunds.
