The scial purpse f the system is t encurage creativity and the advancement f knwledge by giving thse wh make intellectual (智力的) cntributins a “unique right t their writings and discveries” fr limited times. Prtectin is prvided fr a much lnger time fr cpyrights than fr patents. The U.S. Cpyright Law f 1976 prvides a term r the lifetime f the authr plus 50 years. It recgnizes that the value f written wrks ften extends ver a lnger time than that f technlgical advances in the public area.
It is essential t register fr frmal prtectin in rder t have sme degree f prtectin against the cpyright f ne’s wrks by thers. The prcedure fr btaining a cpyright registratin is quite simple—an applicatin is submitted with a small fee and tw cpies f the wrk. N examinatin is made, and the cpyright is immediately in frce.
The Cpyright Office will prvide n request a variety f leaflets (小册子) describing the prcedure and giving infrmatin abut the classes f subject matter that can be registered.

“I am s srry,” I tearfully said t my principal investigatr (PI), explaining I wuld nt be able t return t wrk as riginally planned. Befre I became a parent, I had assumed a baby wuld fit right int my academic plans. But nw, as the end f my leave apprached, I realized I culdn’t simply carry n as I always had. I was wrried this decisin might signal the end f my academic career—but I felt I had n ther chice.
Thankfully, my PI had mre fresight. He tld me I didn’t need t resign and that he culd ffer me a cntract that wuld allw me t cntribute t ur prject frm afar. It prved t be an abslute career lifeline tailred t me.
Then five years after stepping back frm academia, I felt ready t re-enter mre fully. Because I had been able t keep my hand in during my time away, the prspect was much less daunting than it wuld have been therwise. I ended up landing a lecturer psitin that allwed me t slwly ease back in, fcusing n teaching and schlarship with research taking a back seat. And when, 4 years n, a senir lectureship psitin came up in the very grup I had left a decade earlier, the timing was right. With bth f my children in “big schl”, I was ready t really put my ft dwn n the career acceleratr. I gt the jb.
Nw, 6 mnths int my new rle, I am happy t be right where it all began, with invlvement in s many interesting prjects. But what truly made the difference fr me was the ffer f what I needed during that time away. I hpe mre institutins and PIs can cme up with creative prvisins (条款) fr thse in their wrkfrce wh dn’t want t give up their careers but want-r-need t take extended perids f leave. And t thse wh are taking such breaks, r cnsidering it, knw that returning is pssible. Abve all, n bth sides: Please d nt discunt extended leavers. We have a lt t ffer—if we are given the chance.

Reunins ffer a chance t reflect n hw much has changed. One happened in Hllywd when Here premiered (首映), bringing tgether the actrs, directr and writer behind Frrest Gump 40 years later fr a new film. The stars were “de-aged” using new AI tls, making them mre yuthful in sme scenes and enabling the filmmakers t see the transfrmatin in real time while shting.
With the use f generative AI in film making cme things wrth watching. The first is hw AI will be used t tell new types f stries, as strytelling becmes mre persnalised and interactive. N ne is quite sure hw the nature f strytelling will change, but it is sure t. David Thmsn, a film histrian, cmpares generative AI t the advent f sund. When mvies were n lnger silent, it changed the way plt pints were made and hw deeply viewers culd cnnect with characters. Cristóbal Valenzuela, wh runs a cmpany prviding AI-enhanced sftware, says AI is like a “new kind f camera”, ffering a fresh “pprtunity t reimagine what stries are like”. Bth are right.
Anther big develpment t watch is hw AI will be used as a time-saving tl. Generative AI will autmate and simplify cmplex tasks like film-editing and special effects. Fr a glimpse f the future, watch Everything Everywhere All at Once, which wn the Academy Award fr Best Picture in 2023. It featured a scene that used a “rtscping” tl t edit ut the green-screen backgrund and make a talking rck mre believable. It shrtened int hurs what might have therwise taken days f vide-editing.
What is als nticeable is mre dramatic cnflicts between creatrs and thse running AI platfrms. This year is likely t bring flds f lawsuits (诉讼) frm authrs, musicians and actrs abut hw their wrks have been used t train AI systems withut permissin r payment. Perhaps they can agree n sme srt f licensing arrangement, in which AI cmpanies start paying -hlders.
It will prbably be a few years befre a full-length film is prduced entirely by AI, but it is just a matter f time.
    8. What can we learn abut the film Here?
    A. It relates a stry abut yuth.B. The theme f the film is reunin.
    C. AI tls are emplyed in the film.D. It is adapted frm Frrest Gump.

    A. Transfrmative.B. Destructive.C. Representative.D. Irreplaceable.
    10. Why des the authr mentin the film Everything Everywhere All at Once?
    A. T shw the high efficiency f AI tls.B. T demnstrate the influence f the film.
    C. T analyse a nvel way f vide-editing.D. T praise the hard wrk behind the scenes.
    11. What is the article mainly abut?

Writing ut the same wrd again and again may bring back bad memries fr sme, but handwriting can bst cnnectivity acrss brain regins, sme f which are invlved in learning and memry, a new study shws.
In the study, psychlgists Audrey and Ruud, bth at the Nrwegian University f Science and Technlgy, stuck electrdes (电极) n the participants’ heads. They asked the participants t type ut r hand write with a digital pen wrds that appeared n a cmputer screen. Sensrs in a cap recrded electrical brain activity. Then the psychlgists lked fr when tw brain areas are active with the same frequency f electrical waves at the same time. This result can reveal the cnnectivity amng different regins acrss the brain.
With handwriting, the researchers saw increased activity, specifically in lw frequency bands, nt nly in the expected mtr areas but als in thers assciated with learning. These lw frequency bands have previusly been shwn t supprt memry prcesses. When the team cmpared the tw tasks, they realized that handwriting —but nt typing —increased the cnnectivity acrss parietal (顶叶) brain regins, which are invlved in sensry and mtr prcessing, and central regins, many f which are invlved in memry.
“Even when the mvements are very similar, the activatin seems much, much higher in handwriting,” Audrey says. “It shws that there’s mre invlvement f these brain regins when yu’re handwriting, which might give yu sme specific advantages.”
These findings suggest that there are distinct prcesses f brain activatin happening while a persn types r writes. This bst f stimulatin f handwriting facilitates learning because these particular waves between these areas are invlved in memry frmatin and encding (编码) .
And althugh handwriting may help with learning prcesses, typing is ften easier, faster and mre practical. “Students and teachers alike shuld therefre cnsider the task at hand t decide t hand write r type,” Audrey says. Despite the need fr mre studies t determine the best learning strategy, experts say that handwriting shuldn’t be left behind in the digital age. “Schls need t bring in mre writing int curriculum design,” Ruud says.
    12. What did Audrey and Ruud mainly d in their research?
    A. They tested the functin f electrdes.B. They analyzed the brain structure.
    C. They mnitred the brain activities.D. They recrded the writing speed.
    13. Why can handwriting imprve learning mre than typing?
    A. It invlves mre specific brain activatin.B. It prmtes better muscle memry.
    C. It allws fr mre innvative thinking.D. It encurages better cncentratin.
    14 What’s the authr’s attitude tward typing?
    A. Favrable.B. Objective.C. Dubtful.D. Unclear.
    15. What might be the best title fr the text?
    A. Taking Ntes by Hand is Becming Uncmmn in Class
    B. Using Keybard is Recmmended Due t Its Cnvenience
