Inspired by hw ants mve thrugh narrw spaces, scientists have built a rbt that can pass thrugh narrw passages, climb ver steps and mve n grass and lse rck.
“Insects are really a neat inspiratin fr designing rbt systems that can perfrm varius mvement behavirs,” says Nick Gravish, a rbticist at the University f Califrnia, San Dieg. Ants adapt their gesture t crawl thrugh tiny spaces. And they aren’t disturbed by uneven earth r small bstacles. Fr example, their legs cllapse a bit when they hit an bject, and they cntinue t mve frward quickly.
Gravish team’s rbt is abut 30 centimeters wide and 20 centimeters lng with fur wavy limbs (肢). Each limb is made up f six nested tubes that can draw int each ther. What’s mre, the limbs dn’t need t be actively pwered r adjusted t change their verall length. Instead, springs play a crucial rle because they allw the legs t becme shrt when the rbt passes thrugh a narrw space and stretch back ut in an pen space.
The rbt can mdify the width and height f its bdy t achieve a larger range f bdy sizes than ther similar rbts. The leg parts cntracts int themselves t let the rbt crawl thrugh small tunnels and stretches ut when under lw ceilings. This adaptability lets the rbt get int spaces as small as 72 percent its full width and 68 percent its full height. Next, the researchers plan t actively cntrl the firmness f the springs that cnnect the leg parts t tune the mtin t earth type withut cnsuming t much pwer.
The researchers think that such small-scale, minimal rbts are easy t prduce and can be quickly adjusted t explre cmplex envirnments. Hwever, the researchers think that these rbts are, fr nw, t breakable fr search-and-rescue, explratin r bilgical mnitring.
