I used t tell my children that they were smart, because I was impressed by their rapid grwth. I remember clearly watching my daughter figure ut hw t build a Leg huse that wuld stand up n its wn, and thinking: Lk at this tiny architectural genius.
But decades f research nw suggest that we shuld nt tell ur children they're "smart" when they d impressive things. When I first heard it, I felt instinctively irritated. But after I dug int the research, I was persuaded. It all ges back t smething called "grwth" mindset, a term develped and ppularized by Carl Dweck, a prfessr f psychlgy at Stanfrd. Prfessr Dweck believes that we can change ur abilities thrugh effrt and strategy. The alternative t a grwth mindset is a "fixed" mindset—the idea that ur abilities are inbrn and can't be changed. When we praise ur children fr being "smart", based n victries like ding well n a test, we're unwittingly(不知不觉地) encuraging them t believe that if they d prly r make mistakes, they're nt smart.
It's nt just what we say that matters, but hw we tlerate ur children's failures. A 2016 study by Dweck shwed that parents' "failure mind-sets" affect their children mre than their views n intelligence. In ther wrds, if parents think that failure is shameful, their children are mre likely t be afraid f making mistakes. The study cncludes that everyne is actually a mixture f fixed and grwth mindsets, cntinually evlving with experience. Whatever we say r dn't say t ur kids, the key is t get them mre cmfrtable with failures big r small.
It's helpful fr kids t understand that yu make mistakes and learn hw they happen. When yu chat with them, yu can describe what yu learned, r hw yu strategized a slutin. "Yu dn't have t deny yu have negative emtinal reactins," Dweck said. "We, as a sciety, dn't d that enugh because we feel embarrassed when we make mistakes." But if we discuss ur missteps mre and explain hw we vercame them, ur children can learn t d the same.
28. Hw did the authr feel abut the research advice at first?
A. It was cnfusing. B. It was annying.
C. It was persuasive. D. It was encuraging.
29. What d the children with a grwth mindset tend t believe?
A. Smartness is the key t success.
B. Difficulties in daily life teach them a lt.
C. Their abilities can be imprved thrugh hard wrk.
D. They are impressive due t their gd grades n tests.
30. What des Dweck suggest parents d?
A. Help children face failures psitively.
B. Hide their negative feelings frm children.

Mst f us are familiar with Grundhg Day, wherein a large grundhg checks t see its shadw n February 2 and helps t predict when winter will end. But have yu ever heard abut hw a muntain twn in Nrth Carlina uses a caterpillar (毛 毛 虫) knwn as the Wlly Wrm t make similar predictins?
Accrding t the flklre(民间传说), the amunt f black n the wlly wrm in autumn predicts the severity f the upcming winter. The lnger the wlly wrm's black bands (带) are, the lnger, clder, snwier, and mre severe the winter will be. Similarly, a wider middle brwn band is assciated with a milder upcming winter. The psitin f the lngest dark bands suppsedly indicates which part f winter will be cldest r hardest. If the head end f the caterpillar is dark, the beginning f winter will be severe. If the tail end is dark, the end f winter will be cld. In additin, the wlly wrm caterpillar has 13 segments t its bdy, which traditinal frecasters say crrespnd t the 13 weeks f winter.
Scientific studies n wrm frecasting are few and far between. The mst ften cited is a small trial that American Museum f Natural Histry entmlgist Hward Curran cnducted in 1948. Having heard abut the caterpillar flklre, Curran traveled t Bear Muntain State Park t cllect wlly wrms each fall fr eight years. He fund that if the wrms had brwn markings n mre than a third f their bdy, winters tended t be milder.
Mst scientists discunt the flklre f caterpillar predictins as just a flklre. "It's a wnderful stry, but I d think it was a playful trial," says Je Bggs, an entmlgist at Ohi State University Extensin wh has studied wlly wrms. "Curran was a real scientist. He had a bunch f papers published, but he never published this ne—prbably because he knew it wuldn't stand up t peer review."
Mike Peters, an entmlgist at the University f Massachusetts, desn't disagree, but he says there culd be a link between the band f a wlly wrm and the severity f winter. Peters suggests that the timing f their grwth and envirnmental cnditins, such as temperature, misture levels, and fd surces, can impact the appearance f wlly wrms, including their size, clratin, and band patterns. By analyzing these characteristics, researchers can ptentially infer infrmatin abut the weather cnditins. "The band des say smething abut a heavy winter," he says. "The nly thing is that it's telling yu abut the previus year."
32. Hw d peple predict the weather thrugh wlly wrms?
A. By analyzing their living habits. B. By measuring the change f their size.
C. By studying clr bands n their bdies. D. By calculating the number f their segments.
33. What is Hward Curran's finding based n?
A. A survey n the lcals. B. His persnal bservatins.
C. Studies by previus scientists. D. Statistics cllected by the museum.
34. What des the underlined wrd "discunt" in paragraph 4 mean?
A. cnsider. B. believe. C. dubt. D. dismiss.
35. Which statement might Mike Peters agree with?
A. The caterpillar frecasting needs lng-term data t supprt it.
B. The clr band f caterpillars can be a mirrr f past weather.
C. The cld envirnment has a great impact n caterpillars' grwth.
D. Wlly wrms can help predict the severity f winter accurately.

根据第一段“Matt Dgue, a 34-year-ld nature phtgrapher, had been suffering frm depressin when he first fund his p……ting rck bttm.“In the beginning, I was s paranid (多疑的) and angry that I culdn't leave the huse, ”says Dgue.“When I attempted t end my life, I knew I needed t see smene.
根据第二段中的“When I first heard it, I felt instinctively irritated.”
根据第二段中的“I t all ges back t smething called…change ur abilities thrugh effrt and strategy.”
根据第三段中的“Having heard abut the tended t be milder.”
根据第四段中的“Mst scientists discunt the flklre f caterpillar predictins as that was just a flklre.”“It's a wnderful stry, but I d think it was a playful trial,”says Je Bggs可知, Je Bggs表示这确实是一个精彩的故事, 但不是一个严肃的试验。
根据上文“…maybe it's the chclate bar yu buy n the way hme frm wrk, r the new clthes that yu dn't really need.”和下文“Perhaps we dn't feel we deserved it, r we dn't think it was a respnsible way t spend ur mney.”F 选项“当我们犒劳自己时,有时会让我们感到内疚”是适合填入此处的。

38. B “Psychlgist Len Seltzer cnsiders the difference between self-indulgence and self-nurturing.”
39. C 根据下文“S, many universities publish guides with advice fr cping with exam stress.”
40. E 根据上一句“... they recmmend rewarding yurself fr yur effrts, ding things that yu enjy and are gd at s that yu can feel accmplishment.”以及最后一句话“Thus, perhaps, as lng as we make respnsible decisins, we shuldn't feel guilty abut ur guilty pleasures.”
