A cuple f years ag my prfessr shwed us the vide in a class. Nw I’m applying t medical schl, and I just want yu t knw I std in the bathrm like Wnder Wman befre I tk my MCAT (Medical Cllege Admissin Test), and it really helped. S I just want t say thanks.”

This kind f interactin happens far mre frequently than I’d ever have imagined: a stranger warmly greets me, shares a persnal stry abut successfully dealing with a big challenge, and then simply thanks me fr my part in it. They’re wmen and men, ld and yung, struggling and wealthy. But smething cnnects them: all have felt pwerless in the face f great pressure and anxiety, and all have discvered a remarkably simple way t release themselves frm that feeling f pwerlessness.
Fr mst authrs, the bk cmes first, then the respnses. Fr me, it was the ther way arund. First, I wrte sme schlarly articles, which n ne ever read; they inspired a talk I delivered at the TED Glbal Cnference in 2012. In it, I discussed research I had dne that yielded an dd and unexpected finding abut hw ur bdies influence ur brains. As a result f this research, I was able t describe a technique—that Wnder Wman-in-the-bathrm thing Fetaine can quickly increase ur cnfidence and decrease ur anxiety in challenging situatins. Immediately after the 21-minute vide f the talk was psted n the Internet, I began hearing frm peple wh had seen it.
Of curse, my speech didn’t magically give Fetaine the knwledge she needed t d well n the MCAT. But it may have released her frm the fear that culd have prevented her frm expressing the things she knew.

As peple’s awareness f envirnmental prtectin cntinues t increase, the tech industry needs t keep wrking n the inventins like thse described abve. These breakthrughs will help us all t d mre with less. Als, tech cmpanies are facing calls t keep their wn huses in rder. Lawmakers and cnsumers want them t use fewer materials in the prductin prcess and rethink their apprach t recycling and waste. The gd news is that gvernments and ec-innvative cmpanies have already carried ut a majr clean-up missin.

In a fascinating discvery, western lwland grillas (大猩猩) at Z Atlanta have been caught summning their keepers using a strange cugh-sneeze mixture, which researchers have called a “snugh”. Only tw ther species have displayed this ability t create new vcalizatins t attract ur attentin: z-hused chimpanzees and rangutans. Nw, we can add grillas t that list.
As many f us knw, Kk put a sptlight n grilla intelligence in the 1980s and 1990s with her incredible ability t cmmunicate with humans using sign language. She was trained and wrked hard at it, but nw it seems grillas have taken it upn themselves t establish unique cmmunicatin with us in their wn way.
Rberta Salmi, a bilgical anthrplgist at the University f Gergia, and clleagues ran an experiment t cnfirm the purpse f the “snugh”, by placing eight f the z’s grillas in three different situatins. In the first, nly the keeper was present; in the secnd nly the fd was present; in the final ne, the keeper was hlding the fd. The fd and keeper were in sight but ut f reach. The grillas invlved used the “snugh” vcalizatin mst when there was a human present with fd, indicating the call is likely an attempt t get the keeper’s attentin.
This cmplex vcal learning—the ability t prduce unique calls—is rare in the animal kingdm and cnfirmed nly in sme species f birds, bats and elephants. But they all d s by imitating. The analysis shwed the grilla’s “snugh” is a unique sund, nt an imitatin—althugh they are certainly capable f imitating us in ther ways.
“These results demnstrate that grillas can change their calls t prduce a nvel sund and furthermre cnfirm that they can prduce their calls and gestures intentinally t change the attentin state f their caregiver,” the team cncluded in their paper. We’ve clearly lng underestimated these clever suls.
    32. Which f the fllwing can replace “summning” underlined in paragraph 1?
    A. pleasingB. callingC. findingD. warning
    33. Hw did the researchers carry ut the research?
    A. By rdering the grillas t make the “snugh” vcalizatin.
    B. By training the grillas t attract their keepers’ attentin.
    C. By cmparing the grillas’ reactins in different situatins.
    D. By gathering infrmatin abut the grillas frm their keepers.
    34. Why des the authr mentin sme ther animals in paragraph 4?
    A. T illustrate grillas can imitate humans in ther ways.
    B. T cnfirm nly grillas have the ability t prduce unique calls.
    C. T prve the animals can prduce unique calls thrugh imitatin.
    D. T shw grillas’ ability t invent the new vcalizatin is uncmmn.
    35. What can be inferred frm the research?
    A. Sme animals have the ability t make new sunds.
    B. Grillas can create a new sund t draw zkeepers’ attentin.
    C. Sme intelligent animals try t attract attentin by imitating.
    D. Grillas are able t cmmunicate with humans using unique gestures.
