    On 22nd April 1970, millins f Americans tk t the streets t demnstrate fr a healthy, sustainable envirnment and thusands f students marched in prtest at the terrible situatin f the envirnment.Businesses were frced t fllw envirnmental standards if they wanted t cntinue their peratins.The year 1990 saw Earth Day reach ut t many mre cuntries arund the wrld.It helped pave the way fr the 1992 United Natins Earth Summit in Ri de Janeir, bringing tgether many natins, fr a jint effrt twards prtecting the envirnment.In 2009, the United Natins decided t fficially set April 22 as Earth Day.Fr his rle as the funder f Earth Day, Gaylrd Nelsn was awarded the Presidential Medal f Freedm(1995), the highest hnur given t civilians in the United States.We hnur the man, as the fight fr a cleaner envirnment cntinues.
