A grup f secnd-year cllege students have discvered hidden writing n a page frm a bk frm the 1500s, using a special camera system they built.
Surprisingly, finding hidden writing n very ld dcuments isn’t all that unusual. In fact, there’s even a special name fr dcuments like this: a palimpsest (再生羊皮纸卷).
Lng ag, writing was dne n parchment — thin, dried animal skins specially prepared fr writing. But parchment wasn’t easy t make and wasn’t cheap. S it became cmmn t erase the ld writing ff a parchment and then reuse it fr anther piece f writing. That’s what creates a palimpsest.
The writing erased ff the parchment can’t be seen directly, but scientists have learned ways t use special lighting t reveal the riginal writing. But it’s unusual fr yung cllege students t discver palimpsests.
Last year, first-year students at the Rchester Institute f Technlgy tk part in a class that brught tgether many students t take n a prject as a grup. The prject was t build a special camera system that culd take pictures using different kinds f light.
Over the summer, the students wrking n the imaging camera managed t finish it. When they were dne, they brrwed several ld parchments frm the cllectin at the schl’s Cary Graphic Arts Cllectin. When they put ne f the pages under their camera system with UV light, the hidden writing suddenly appeared. Under the UV light, handwriting in French culd easily be seen behind the fancy writing and decratins nrmally visible n the page.
Ze, a student invlved in the prject, said, “This was amazing because this dcument has been in the Cary Cllectin fr almst 10 years and n ne nticed it.” The students are even mre excited because even thugh the parchment is n lnger part f a bk, they knw where 29 ther pages frm the same bk are. The students, wh are nw wrking with thers t lcate the ther parchments, hpe these, t, will have hidden writing and that they can figure ut what it means.
