Interestingly, when it cmes t energy use, the brain desn’t distinguish between tasks that we traditinally regard as “hard” and thse that cme mre naturally. This was first demnstrated in the 1950s in a study shwing that the brain’s level f metablic (代谢的) activity is remarkably cnstant, regardless f whether we are cncentrating r letting ur mind wander.
Yur brain distributes resurces t its different parts depending n the mental activity being carried ut.But there is a trade-ff. Fr instance, in a study published in Nvember, Lavie and her teammates measured energy use in the brain regin respnsible fr daydreaming and fund that it decreased when vlunteers carried ut a prblem-slving task that required fcused attentin.
S thinking hard des burn mre energy in the brain regin invlved, but this is ffset by energy savings in ther parts f the brain. The amunts f energy invlved are very small. Actually, a self-cntrl task, such as keeping yur hand in icy water fr as lng as yu can, “burns up 1 calrie f glucse”, says Ewan McNay, at the University at Albany in New Yrk. Hwever, althugh this is a tiny amunt f fuel,yur brain desn’t see it that way. “It wrries abut an imbalance f supply ver demand,” he says. If the brain detects lcal drainage (排泄) f glucse—the sugar that fuels the brain—it perceives it as smething bad, says McNay.
