“Yu did?” I thught I knew everything abut my dad, but I never knew this. I realized that maybe it’s nt that there’s nthing left t say. A few weeks later, after my family and I mved back int ur painted huse, I called my parents. “Hi, sweets,” he said. “Here’s Mm.” “Wait, Dad,” I said. “Hw are yu?” We ended up talking abut everything he was wrking n. Atmspheric (大气层的) rivers are lng and narrw bands f water vapr (水蒸气) in Earth’s atmsphere, which are called “large rivers in the sky”. These rivers frm ver warm cean waters. They are huge. They can be 930 miles lng and ne-third that wide.
Like real rivers, they carry huge amunts f water. These large streams f small water drps are blwn by wind ver land. When that happens, the water vapr cls dwn and cndenses (凝结). Atmspheric rivers can be gd. They bring water t dry areas. Hwever, they can cause huge, fast-mving strms. Sme cause snwfalls that bury twns. They are als the main cause f flds n the U.S. West Cast.
Atmspheric rivers are hard t predict. But scientists are wrking t change that. Marty Ralph, a scientist wh wrks at the University f Califrnia, directs the Center fr Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E). They created the first cmputer mdel t predict atmspheric rivers n the U.S. West Cast. This mdel uses a prgram that runs n a cmputer t create a mdel f a real-wrld event. CW3E als studies atmspheric rivers using planes. Pilts drp instruments int atmspheric rivers t cllect infrmatin like temperature and wind speed, which helps with frecasting.
Will climate change affect atmspheric rivers? Climate change happens naturally ver a lng perid f time. But tday, it is largely caused by human activities and is causing the Earth t warm, which affects atmspheric rivers.
Atmspheric rivers are pushed by the wind. Thse winds are driven by the temperature differences between the ples and the equatr (赤道). But the ples are als warming faster than areas near the equatr. That makes the temperature difference between the areas smaller. This can make winds weaker.
Climate change might nt cause mre atmspheric rivers. But there may be very, very wet seasns and very, very dry seasns. Such a seesaw in rainfall culd make it harder t manage what water there is.

“It’s nt enugh t be smart and hardwrking. Students must als be able t understand and manage their emtins t succeed at schl,” said Carlyn MacCann, lead authr f the study. MacCann and her clleagues analyzed data frm mre than 160 studies, representing mre than 42,000 students frm 27 cuntries, published between 1998 and 2019. The students ranged in age frm primary schl t cllege. The researchers fund that students with higher EI tended t get higher grades and better achievement test scres than thse with lwer EI scres. This finding held true even when cntrlling fr intelligence and persnality factrs. What was mst surprising t the researchers was the assciatin held despite different ages.
As fr why EI can affect academic perfrmance, MacCann believes a number f factrs may cme int play. “Students with higher EI may be better able t manage negative emtins, such as anxiety, bredm and disappintment, which can negatively affect academic perfrmance,” she said. “Als, these students may be better able t manage the scial wrld arund them, frming better relatinships with teachers, classmates and family, all f which are imprtant t academic success.” Finally, the skills required fr EI, such as understanding human mtivatin and emtin, may verlap with (与……重叠) the skills required t master certain subjects, such as histry and language, giving students an advantage in thse subject areas, accrding t Mac Cann.
Hwever, Mac Cann cautins against widespread testing f students t identify and target thse with lw EI as it may stigmatize (给……打上烙印) thse students. Instead, she recmmends interventins that invlve the whle schl, including additinal teacher training and a fcus n teacher well-being and emtinal skills. “Prgrams that integrate emtinal skill develpment int the existing curriculum wuld be beneficial, as research suggests that training wrks better when run by teachers rather than external prfessinals,” she said. “Increasing skills fr everyne nt just thse with lw EI wuld benefit everyne.”
32.What can we learn frm MacCann’s study?
A.Only students in middle schl and high schl participated in it.
B.EI had an effect n learning fr students f all ages.
C.Students with lwer EI tended t get higher grades.
D.EI is als influenced by intelligence and persnality factrs.
33.What is nt a reasn fr the cnclusin f MacCann’s study?
A.High-EI students are capable f cntrlling negative emtins.
B.High-EI students are mre likely t develp scial relatinships.
C.High-EI students can easily fcus n their study.
D.High-EI students have helpful skills fr certain subjects.
34.What des MacCann suggest in the last paragraph?
A.Equipping teachers with emtinal skills.
B.Intrducing a new curriculum.
C.Develping special prgrams fr students with lw EI.
D.Emplying emtinal specialists t give training t students.
35.What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A.Shuld EI be taught in schl?B.Hw can students develp high EI?
