Peple wh eat breakfast high in refined carbs rated less attractive
If yu want t lk yur best in the mrning, it may be wrth swapping the ultra-prcessed pastries and fruit juice fr whlemeal tast and tea withut sugar. Researchers in France fund that peple wh ate a breakfast rich in refined carbhydrates were rated less attractive than 21.thse wh started the day with healthier unrefined carbs.
Scientists at the University f Mntpellier believe the subtle shift in facial attractiveness may be driven by changes in bld sugar and insulin 22.that can affect skin appearance and have lnger-term effects n sex hrmnes.
“It's surprising t cnsider but ur dietary chices can have rapid effects n ur appearance,” said Dr Claire Berticat, an evlutinary bilgist and the first authr n the study. “These physilgical changes culd subtly alter facial features, impacting 23.hw thers perceive attractiveness.”
The researchers recruited 52 men and 52 wmen 24.aged 20 t 30 and randmly assigned them t have a 500-calrie breakfast rich in either refined r unrefined carbhydrates. The refined carbs breakfast 25.included a French baguette made frm industrially milled flur, jam, apple r range juice, and tea r cffee with sugar available. The unrefined carbs meal was stnegrund whlemeal bread with butter and cheese, an range r apple, and tea r cffee withut sugar.
The scientists measured bld sugar levels f vlunteers befre and after they ate and then tk headshts f the participants under cntrlled lighting cnditins. The phts were then passed t grups f raters t estimate hw ld, hw masculine r feminine and hw attractive the individuals lked.
26.Writing in Pls One, the researchers claim that eating refined carbhydrates fr breakfast decreased facial attractiveness fr men and wmen, thugh the lnger-term effects f eating such fds, gleaned frm questinnaires cmpleted by the vlunteers, were mre cmplicated.
“The effect varies by gender and meal type, underscring the cmplex relatinship between diet and attractiveness,” Berticat said. “Our findings serve as a 27.cmpelling reminder f the far-reaching impact f dietary chices nt nly n health but als n traits having particular scial imprtance 28.such as facial attractiveness.”
Refined carbhydrates can prduce spikes in bld sugar, which the bdy cunters by releasing insulin. The respnse can drive sugar levels t lw, a cnditin called hypglycaemia, and affect bld flw and skin appearance. In the study, nly the refined carbs breakfast prduced hypglycaemia.
David Perrett, a prfessr f psychlgy at the University f St Andrews, wh has studied facial cues fr health, said there shuld be n surprise 29.that diet affects attractiveness. Fruit and vegetables imprved attractiveness by increasing plant pigments called cartenids in the skin, he said, 30.while high-sugar diets culd age the skin.

The little thief: Hw Charlie Chaplin survived his hungry childhd
A recently unearthed interview with an ld friend recalls hw the actr was lked after by a kindly‘fster mther' wh made sure he did the right thing.
The (31)E.extreme pverty endured by Charlie Chaplin while grwing up in the slums (贫民窟) f Victrian Lndn (32)D. reduced him t stealing and being sclded by the wman wh tk care f him, accrding t an interview with ne f his childhd friends that has remained unheard in the British Film Institute fr almst 40 years.
Effie Wisdm, whse aunt gave him a hme frm hme when he needed it mst, lamented that Chaplin "had a terrible life" as a child, "always hungry", dressed in "ragged", filthy clthes - n dubt later inspiring the cmic genius wh created the Tramp, sciety's eternal victim and ne f cinema's mst (33)G.memrable characters.
In 1983, aged 92, Wisdm gave an interview in which she recalled first meeting Chaplin when he was five and she was seven, with her aunt becming his "fster mther", as he used t tell her.
She recalled: "My aunt used t feed him because there was n scial (34)H.security in thse days, n free milk, n children's (35)F.allwances, nthing. Yu never starved and yet yu were n the breadline."
"He used t g up Lambeth Walk and pinch . He’d cme hme with fur eggs ne day in his pcket. He came hme with a pair f bts ne day he’d nicked."
Her aunt sclded him: "D yu want me t get the plice? If yu g n ding this, yu’ll be lcked up. Yu realize that, dn't yu?"
The interview was (36)K.cnducted by Kevin Brwnlw, ne f Britain's leading experts in silent films after researching Unknwn Chaplin, the acclaimed three-part 1983 dcumentary series that he made with David Gill. It has been stred in the British Film Institute's archive (档案) ever since.
Chaplin's parents were music-hall perfrmers and his mther was abandned by her husband. His mther was then (37)C.cmmitted t an asylum(精神病院).
After Chaplin's death in 1977, Wisdm had written t his widw (遗孀), with memries f his mther’s desperate cncern fr her sns, Charlie and Sydney "I tld Lady Chaplin I knew Charlie when he was a little by. I used t play with him ut in the street. When his mther had a nervus (38)A.breakdwn, she said t my aunt, If I had t g away, yu wuldn’t let my lvely sns g int an rphanage?’ My aunt said, ‘N, I’ll lk after them, dn't yu wrry'. My aunt lked after them, fed them and clthed them."
Chaplin never frgt that. Wisdm paid (39)J.tribute t his genersity twards her after finding success in America: "He used t send my aunt s much mney because she used t lk after him."He als wrte t her.
Chaplin, with his derby hat (圆顶窄边礼帽),tthbrush mustache and impssibly large bts, was the prtagnist in such (40)B.masterpieces as City Lights, The Great Dictatr and Limelight.
Wisdm, wh left schl at 13 and wrked in a Lndn pub int her 80s, recalled his natural cmedic talent, "He was always falling abut being funny. He'd get an ld table ut in the yard, and he’d get all the kids in there, and get up there, put an ld pair f trusers n, an ld cat and a stick when he was 12. The kids lved that, he used t fall ff the table, then he’d get up." But she jked: "I never thught he'd get t where he gt."
She remembered him writing t her aunt frm America, telling her that he wuld visit n his return t England: "He said, I'm nt like when I left England with nthing. I’m ging n t be a rich man."
She added that Chaplin stayed at the Ritz(一家豪华酒店) and turned up at his aunt's hme in-a chauffeur (私人司机)-driven Rlls-Ryce: "He invited my aunt and my uncle and me t the Ritz. My aunt says t me, ‘Of curse I'd never been in a place like that'."
