T my surprise, it was a girl abut my age with a bldy cut n her frehead. “Hi. I’m Maria. What’s wrng with yu?” I asked her with cncern. Awkward and embarrassed, she replied,“I’m Jane. I ...” She hesitated and then asked me carefully, “May I stay here fr the night? I’ll be ff tmrrw mrning.” Seeing her uneasiness, I cmfrted her, “Take it easy, Jane. Stay with me tnight.” I invited her int the huse.
Lking arund, Jane appeared t have calmed dwn. “Let me treat yur injury first,” I said and she agreed.
I cleaned and bandaged(包扎) her injured frehead and then gave her sme bread and bacn t eat. “Want t sleep in my tent?” I asked her and she ndded. Having left her in the bathrm, I went t lk fr anther sleeping bag. When I returned, Jane was seated n the sfa and sadness cluded her face.
Walking acrss the dark yard, I accmpanied Jane int the tent. We lay dwn side by side. Seized by curisity and cncern, I cnstantly turned ver, wndering what had happened t her and hw she came here. Jane seemed t have sensed that and started t speak.
Jane’s father died f cancer years befre. Her mther did dd cleaning jbs t raise her. Mney was tight but her mther tried t d what she culd t satisfy Jane. Several weeks befre, Jane accidentally saw a fancy white dress in the stre windw, which she fell in lve with at first sight. She excitedly tld her mther abut that, wh prmised t buy it as her birthday gift. Frm then n, Jane was lking frward t it.
Jane’s 16th birthday came but her mther didn’t get hme until the evening.
