Back in 1958, I was crazy abut the Nrflk and Western 746. The smth bullet-nse engine with its range and yellw lines and shiny streamline d black tender(车厢) seemed t have cast a spell n me.
Tgether the engine and tender measured a little shy f 2 feet—enrmus by the ty train standards f the day. Even better, the 746 had a wrking headlight and smker, and its tender sang high.
Unfrtunately, the amazing 746 als had an amazing price—$50, equal t abut $450 tday. That was far mre than my grandfather culd affrd. Instead, I had t be cntent with his little Linel plastic, which was SIX INCHES shrter than the 746 and had n headlight, n smker r n sund! But that was the best that my grandfather culd give me at that time.
Years passed, and I was in my 30s. Superir sund systems and cmputer cntrls dminated ty trains. I never gave a lk. My interest in ty trains, I firmly believed, had faded, s did my admiratin fr the 746, since my grandfather was nt with me. The 746 was never called t mind. On an rdinary day, hwever, I happened t see the 746 utside the windw f a train shw. Just ne-lk, I culd nt lk away. Childhd memries that I tried t hide in the depths f my heart raced thrugh my mind, happy r sad.
That day I tk the 746 hme and placed it in the center f the rm, and let my childhd dream sing its way arund me. Smke rse ut frm the engine and the sft sng sunded frm its tender. It seemed as if I culd see the sft light in grandfather’s eyes and hear his cheerful laughter.

Tw separate research grups in the UK and Denmark have cme up with the same idea fr a study that culd help save endangered species, and have gtten the same results. It invlves sucking(吸) envirnmental DNA frm the air that animals leave behind.
“We use a really small pump that pulls the air thrugh, and we hpe the DNA gets caught n the filter(过滤器),” said Elizabeth Clare, the lead researcher, “It’s a bit like making cffee、Yu make cffee by sucking water thrugh a filter and leaving the cffee grunds behind. That’s basically what we’re ding; we’re just sucking the air thrugh and hping that the DNA gets left behind.”
Clare says the cncept has been used fr years in different ways. Scientists sample pathgens(病原体) frm the air, which has been used t help track COVID-19、Envirnmental DNA can als be cllected frm water t help ease invasive species.
A big gal fr bth research teams with the new study is t be able t lcate endangered species and help save them. It is imprtant t nte that this type f DNA sampling can nly be picked up if a species is in the area, s if there were tw f the same animal, scientists wuld nt be able t tell which ne the DNA came frm.
Bth research grups als reprted certain DNA samples nt shwing up when they knew an animal had been in the area. They als can’t tell yet hw lng an animal’s DNA will stick arund after it’s been in ne area. Clare says she’d like t plan mre researches t get these answers.
But ne thing is fr sure after cnducting the study. Clare says she has a whle new perspective n taking a deep breath. “As yu knw, I’m walking thrugh a jungle r the park r taking my dg fr a walk r my kids ut t play, and I take a deep breath; I think I just inhaled infrmatin abut all the things that have been here befre, and as a scientist, that’s exciting t think that the infrmatin that I’m trying t gather is literally hanging in frnt f me,” she said.
25. Why des the authr mentin cffee-making?
A. T illustrate hw the idea wrks.B. T demnstrate the functin f a filter.
C. T cmpare tw different methds.D. T prve hw simply DNA-sucking wrks.

C
There’s a useful cncept frm psychlgy that helps explain why gd peple d things that harm the envirnment: the false cnsensus(共识) effect. That’s where we vervalue hw acceptable and widespread ur wn behavir is in sciety. Put simply, if yu’re ding smething (even if yu secretly knw yu prbably shuldn’t), yu’re mre likely t think plenty f ther peple d it t. What’s mre, yu likely verestimate hw much ther peple think that behavir is bradly OK.
This bias(偏见) allws peple t justify scially unacceptable r illegal behavirs. Researchers have bserved the false cnsensus effect in drug use and illegal hunting. Mre recently, cnservatinists are beginning t reveal hw this effect cntributes t envirnmental damage.
In Australia, peple wh admitted paching(偷猎) thught it was much mre widespread in sciety than it really was, and had higher estimates than fishers wh beyed the law. They als believed thers viewed paching as scially tlerable; hwever, in reality, mre than 90% f fishers tk the ppsite stand n this. The false cnsensus effect has als shwn up in studies examining supprt fr nuclear energy and ffshre wind farms.
Just as cncepts frm psychlgy can help explain sme frms f envirnmental damage, s t can they help slve it. Fr example, research shws peple are mre likely t litter in areas where there’s already a lt f trash thrwn arund; s making sure the grund arund a bin is nt cvered in rubbish may help.
Factual infrmatin n hw ther peple think and behave can be very pwerful. Energy cmpanies have substantially reduced energy cnsumptin simply by shwing peple their difference in electricity use cmpared t their neighbrs. Encuragingly, stimulating peple’s natural desire fr scial psitin has als been successful in getting peple t “g green t be seen”, r t publicly purchase ec-friendly prducts.
As the research evidence shws, scial standards can be a pwerful frce in encuraging and ppularizing envirnmentally friendly behavirs. Perhaps yu can d yur bit by sharing this article!
29. Which example best illustrates the false cnsensus effect?
A. A student spends lng hurs surfing the Internet.
B. A blgger assumes many peple dislike his psts.
C. A smker believes peple generally apprve f smking.
D. A driver frequently parks illegally in public places.
30. Hw did mst Australian fishers view the issue f paching?
A. It is cntradictry.B. It is impractical.
C. It is widespread.D. It is unacceptable.
31. What d wrds “g green t be seen” refer t in paragraph 5?
A. Develp green habits fr better health.
B. Chse green items that are easy t spt in stres.
C. Jin green mvements fr persnal fulfillment.
D. Make green chices that thers can perceive.
32. What is a recmmended apprach t slving envirnmental prblems?
A. Justify scial standards.B. Publicize sustainable practices.
C. Encurage technlgical innvatins.D. Highlight persnal respnsibilities.
