When reading, my mther likes t slice a paragraph r a sentence ut and attach it t the wall f her kitchen. She picks bring sentences that puzzle me. But I prefer cpying favrite bright lines int a jurnal in sft, gray N.2. pencil, wrd by wrd.
She desn’t knw any f this. There’s nthing shcking: fr ur chatting. We seldm begin certain cnversatins thugh we talk n the phne weekly, smetimes making each ther laugh s hard that I chke and she cries. But what we dn’t say culd fill up rms. Fights with my father. Small failures in schl. Anything that really upsets us.
My mther has never tld me “I lve yu, Lisa.”---as if the fur-wrd absence explains wh I am—s I carry it with me, like a label n me. The last time she almst spke the wrds was tw years ag, when she called t tell me a friend had been in hspital. I said, “I lve yu, Mm.” She stpped fr a while and then said, “Thank yu.” I haven’t said it since, but I’ve wndered why my mther desn’t until I’ve fund a pem that supplies wrds fr the blank spaces I try t figure ut in ur cnversatins:
Dn’t fill up n bread. I say absent-mindedly. The servings here are huge.
My sn, middle-aged, says: Did yu really just say that t me?
What he desn’t knw is that when we’re walking tgether, I desire t reach fr his hand.

A new study has fund that a child’s reading speed can be imprved by simply increasing the space between letters within a piece f text. The research, led by Dr Steven Stagg f Anglia Ruskin University(ARU), examined the benefits f letter spacing and clred verlays(颜色标注)amng children.
Tw grups f children, dyslexic(有阅读障碍的)and nn-dyslexic children, were asked t read fur texts with either standard r extra-large letter spacing, bth with and withut a clred verlay. They were instructed t read the text ut lud while being recrded. The recrding was used t measure the number f errrs they made—specifically missed wrds, added wrds, wrng wrds, and prnunciatin—as well as the participants’ reading time.
The study discvered that text with increased space between letters prvided a benefit fr bth grups. On average, the dyslexia grup shwed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the grup f nn-dyslexic children shwed a 5% increase. In additin t imprving reading speed, it als resulted in a significant decline in the number f wrds missed by the children with dyslexia. Hwever, the study fund that clred verlays had n significant impact n reading speed r the reductin f crrrs fr either grup.
Dr Stagg, Senir Lecturer in Psychlgy at ARU, said: “We believe extra-large letter spacing wrks by reducing what is knwn as the ‘crwding effect’, which can hamper the lcatin and identificatin f letters and reduce reading speed.”
“Our findings strngly suggest that teachers can be cnfident that all children wuld be aided by increased letter spacing in reading materials.” Dr Stagg added. “While we fund that clred verlays prvided little benefit, we suggest children shuld be encuraged t use verlays if they find these help their reading. Clred verlays may nt increase reading speeds, but they may extend reading stamina(持久力). Previus research suggests their benefits may nt becme apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the shrt reading duratin f the tests in ur study may have put clred verlays at a disadvantage.

Have yu ever seen ne f the many vides f an elephant grabbing a paintbrush, putting it in paint, and prducing a painting similar t smething a 5-year-ld culd create? While watching an elephant paint is an amazing sight, we can’t help but wnder whether the training methds and results reflect animal cruelty.
A 2014 study n fur captive(圈养的)Asian elephants at the Melburne Z in Australia sught t identify stress-related behavirs arund the activity f painting. While the researchers fund that the elephants had a neutral respnse t painting--nt stressful, nr enriching---it seemed that when an elephant was nt selected t paint, it displayed nn-interactive behavir. This is seen as a pssible signal f stress in the animals.
In additin, PETA, a famus animal rights grup, has cited several American zs that use harmful training methds t get elephants t paint, perfrm tricks, play instruments, and mre. Nt every z that rganizes elephant painting uses aggressin(攻击)t encurage the elephants. Hwever, PETA argues that animal shelters shuld nt frce animals t d tricks at all.
A ctivist rganizatins warn that elephants can underg extreme discmfrt in the training prcess. Furthermre, many f the painting elephants are very yung, at an age where they shuld still be with their mthers. It raises questins abut whether there’s a chance they were caught fr the express purpse f perfrming, r if they culd smehw be restred(恢复)t a return t the wild.
It is difficult t supprt any kind f trained behavir that differs greatly frm a wild animal’s natural tendencies. The rle f a shelter, ideally, is t allw an animal t live as clse t its nrmal life as pssible, perhaps with an eye t returning the animal t the wild; teaching them t paint des nt seem t align with that target, especially if it’s nt a learned behavir that the animal wuld be willing t d independently.
32.What can be safely cncluded frm the 2014 study?
A.Researchers didn’t cllect slid evidence.
B.Painting prmted elephants’ interactin.
C、Negative effects f painting were cnfirmed.
D.Elephants made strng respnses t painting.
33.What is a cncern f activist rganizatins?
A.Cmplexity f the training prcess.B.Purpses f elephants’perfrmance.
C.Daily activities f captive elephants.D.Ptential fr elephants’return t nature.
34.What des the underlined phrase “align with” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Deal with.B.Agree with.C.Cntrast with.D.Cnnect with.
35.What might be the best title fr the text?
A.Hw PETA Helps?B.Why Animal Enjys Rights?
C.Shuld Elephants Paint?D.Shuld Elephants Live in Captivity?

根据Qaanaaq, Greenland//Kilii Yüyan部分中“He cmmits himself t capturing surprising and unique images fr each stry while his clleague Mallry has quit in their tracks.”(他致力于为每个故事捕捉令人惊讶和独特的图像,而他的同事马洛里已经因为恐惧而退出了。),Canary Islands, Spain//Carsten Peter 部分中的“It’s hard t capture the speed, texture, and sense f danger f lava flwing frm a vlcanic eruptin,”(很难捕捉到从火山喷发类型中流出的岩浆的速度、质地和危险感,),以及Minneriya. Sri Lanka//Brent Stirtn 部分中的“because it was a challenging time t wrk in Sri Lanka. The gvernment was falling apart in ecnmic crisis.”(因为当时在斯里兰卡工作很有挑战性,政府因经济危机而垮台。) 故选A。
根据最后一段“Fr mre pictures and stries, please click: ,请点击。)可以看出,该文章出自国家地理杂志网站。故选D。
B篇
【24题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“When reading, my mther likes t slice a paragraph r a sentence ut and attach it t the wall f her kitchen. She picks bring sentences that puzzle me. But I prefer cpying favrite bright lines int a jurnal in sft, gray N.2 pencil, wrd by wrd.”(读书的时候,我妈妈喜欢剪下一段或一个句子,贴在厨房的墙上。
根据第三段中“My mther has never tld me “I lve yu, Lisa.” —as if the fur-wrd absence explains wh I am—s I carry it with me, like a label n me. The last time she almst spke the wrds was tw years ag, when she called t tell me a friend had been in hspital. I said, “I lve yu, Mm.”She stpped fr a while and then said, “Thank yu.””(我妈妈从来没有对我说过“我爱你,丽莎。”
根据倒数第二段中“After cpying it dwn in my jurnal, I emailed it t mm, adding“This pem makes me think f yu.”(我把这首诗抄在日记里,用电子邮件发给了妈妈,并补充说:“这首诗让我想起了你。”)可知,作者把这首诗寄给她的妈妈是因为这让她想起了妈妈的爱。故选D项。
【27题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“I haven’t said it since, but I’ve wndered why my mther desn’t until I’ve fund a pem that supplies wrds fr the blank spaces I try t figure ut in ur cnversatins.”(从那以后,我再也没有说过这句话,但我一直在想,为什么母亲一直不说,直到我找到了一首诗,为我在谈话中试图理解的空白提供了词汇。)
根据第二段的“Tw grups f children, dyslexic and nn-dyslexic children, were asked t read fur texts with either standard r extra-large letter spacing, bth with and withut a clured verlay. They were instructed t read the text ut lud while being recrded. The recrding was used t measure the number f errrs they made - specifically missed wrds, added wrds, wrng wrds, and prnunciatin-as well as the participants’ reading time. The study discvered. that text with increased space between letters prvided a benefit fr bth grups. On average, the dyslexia grup shwed a 13% increase in reading speed, while the grup f nn-dyslexic children shwed a 5% increase.(两组儿童,诵读困难儿童和非诵读困难儿童,被要求阅读四篇有标准或超大字母间距的文本,有或没有彩色覆盖。他们被要求在录音的同时大声朗读课文。这段录音被用来测量他们所犯错误的数量——特别是漏读的单词、加的单词、错误的单词和发音——以及参与者的阅读时间。研究发现,增大字母间距的文本对两组人都有好处。平均而言,阅读障碍组的阅读速度提高了13%,而非阅读障碍组的阅读速度提高了5%。)”可知,第二段中的研究过程包括分类,记录和计数。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“In additin t imprving reading speed, it als resulted in a significant decline in the number f wrds missed by the children with dyslexia.(除了提高阅读速度外,它还显著减少了患有阅读障碍的儿童遗漏的单词数量。)”
根据最后一段的“Previus research suggests their benefits may nt becme apparent if reading time is less than 10 minutes and the shrt reading duratin f the tests in ur study may have put clred verlays at a disadvantage.(之前的研究表明, 如果阅读时间少于10分钟,它们的好处可能不会显现出来,而我们研究中测试的短阅读时间可能会使彩色覆盖处于不利地位。)” 故选A。
根据第二段关键句“While the researchers fund that the elephants had a neutral respnse t painting—nt stressful, nr enriching—it seemed that when an elephant was nt selected t paint, it displayed nn-interactive behavir. This is seen as a pssible signal f stress in the animals.”(尽管研究人员发现大象对绘画的反应是中性的——既没有压力,也没有丰富——但当大象没有被选中绘画时,它似乎表现出了非互动行为。 故选A项。
根据倒数第二段关键句“It raises questins abut whether there’s a chance the ywere caught fr the express purpse f perfrming, r if they culd smehw be restred t a return t the wild.”(这引发了人们的疑问,它们是否有可能因为表演而被抓住,或者它们是否可以以某种方式回到野外。)
根据画线短语句中“The rle f a shelter, ideally, is t allw an animal t live as clse t its nrmal life as pssible, perhaps with an eye t returning the animal t the wild”(理想情况下,庇护所的作用是让动物尽可能接近其正常生活,也许是为了让动物回归野外)可知,庇护所的作用是让动物尽可能接近其正常生活,或让动物回归野外,由此可知,教它们画画与这个目标不一致,“Agree with”意为“和……一致”,故选B项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段关键句“While watching an elephant paint is an amazing sight, we can’t help but wnder whether the training methds and results reflect animal cruelty.”(虽然观看大象绘画是一个令人惊叹的景象,但我们不禁怀疑训练方法和结果是否反映了虐待动物的行为。)
空前说“We are masters f distractin especially when we feel an uncmfrtable emtin appearing. And ur sciety makes it easier than ever.(我们是分散注意力的大师,尤其是当我们感到不舒服的情绪浮出水面时。
空前说“But des distractin really help deal with emtins? Or des it merely wrsen the prblem?(但分心真的有助于处理情绪吗?还是只会使问题恶化?)”,空格处应该给出答案,A选项“Accrding t experts, the answer is a mixed bag(根据专家的说法, 答案是复杂的)”是给出的一个答案,故选A。
空前说“The emtin in questin causes physilgical changes and ften causes actin.(所讨论的情绪会引起生理上的变化,并经常引起行动。)”,空格处应该举例说明在某些特定的情绪下人会做出什么反应,E选项“Fr example, if yu’re sad, yu draw back; if yu’re angry, yu apprach(例如,如果你悲伤,你会退缩;如果你很生气,你就接近)”举了两个例子,说明人在不同的情绪下会做出的反应,故选E。
空后说“There are lnger md states that last days r mnths, althugh mst emtins nly last a’ few minutes befre they pass. That’s why, if yu’re seeking lng-term slutins, learning t prcess emtins is the nly way.(有些情绪状态会持续几天或几个月,尽管大多数情绪只持续几分钟就过去了。
空前说“Jacbs Hendel, a psychtherapist, uses a prcess, which invlves cnnecting yur feet t the flr, deep belly breathing, slwing dwn and then identifying where different emtins are felt in the bdy.(Jacbs Hendel 是一位心理治疗师,他使用了一个过程,包括把你的脚贴在地板上,深呼吸,放慢速度,然后识别身体中不同的情绪。)”,空后说“nce anxiety ges dwn, yu can identify the ther emtins that are cming up in yur bdy. If the same emtins keep cming up and causing yu stress, learning t sit with them and wrk thrugh them. Facing yur emtins may help yu see that they aren’t as scary as yu thught.(一旦焦虑减轻,你就能识别出身体里出现的其他情绪。如果同样的情绪不断出现,给你带来压力,学会和它们坐在一起,克服它们。面对你的情绪可能会帮助你看到它们并没有你想象的那么可怕。)”,空格处应该说在身体上感受情绪是很好的,C选项“And feeling them in the bdy is a gd place t start(在身体上感受它们是一个很好的开始)”说明了用身体感受情绪很好,故选C。bring... t life, prir t, expse... t..., deny... t...
