Summer sea ice in the Arctic culd melt almst cmpletely by the 2030s —rughly a decade earlier than prjected —even if humans cut back drastically n greenhuse gas emissins, new research suggests.
An ice-free summer, als called a “blue cean event”, will happen when the sea ice drps belw ne millin square kilmeters, writes Jnathan Bamber, a prfessr f physical gegraphy at the University f Bristl, in the Cnversatin.
Previus assessments using mdels have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissins scenaris by 2050. But researchers nticed differences between what climate mdels predicted abut what wuld happen t sea ice and what they’ve actually seen thrugh bservatins. “The mdels, n average, underestimate sea ice decline cmpared with bservatins,” says Nathan Gillett, an Envirnment and Climate Change Canada scientist.
Nw, in a new study published in Nature Cmmunicatins, Gillett and his teammates changed these mdels t mre clsely fit satellite data cllected ver the past 40 years. Using these adapted mdels, the researchers prjected ice changes under different pssible levels f greenhuse gas emissins. Their paper suggests that regardless f the emissins scenari, “we may experience an unprecedented ice-free Arctic climate in the next decade r tw.”
While sea ice naturally decreases in the summer and refreezes during the winter, summer ice cverage has steadily been declining ver the past few decades because f climate change. And Arctic ice melting happens faster itself—as ice disappears, it expses mre f the dark blue cean, which absrbs mre heat and leads t mre melting. This prcess has led t the regin warming nearly fur times faster than the rest f the glbe since 1979.

Rbts can skip and jump, but they’re t rigid t hld an egg easily. Variable-stiffness devices are ptential slutins fr reducing damage t hard rbts, r fr imprving the lad capacity f sft rbts.
This study, published at the IEEE Internatinal Cnference n Rbtics and Autmatin (ICRA) 2023, shws that variable stiffness can be achieved by a silicne (硅胶) spnge.
Lead authr Tianqi Yue frm the University f Bristl explained, “btic arms are t rigid (僵硬的) s they cannt make such a sft human-like grasp n delicate bjects, fr example, an egg. What makes humans different frm rbtic arms is that we have sft tissues enclsing rigid bnes, which act as a natural mitigating (缓和的) mechanism. Silicne spnge is just like the cleaning spnge used in everyday tasks. By pressing the spnge, the spnge stiffens, which is why it can be transfrmed int a variable-stiffness device.

Mr Yue added, “We managed t use a spnge t make a cheap but effective device that can help rbts achieve sft cntact with bjects. The great ptential cmes frm its lw cst and light weight. An ice-free summer, als called a “blue cean event”, will happen when the sea ice drps belw ne millin square kilmeters, writes Jnathan Bamber, a prfessr f physical gegraphy at the University f Bristl, in the Cnversatin.
Previus assessments using mdels have estimated an ice-free summer under high and intermediate emissins scenaris by 2050. But researchers nticed differences between what climate mdels predicted abut what wuld happen t sea ice and what they’ve actually seen thrugh bservatins. “The mdels, n average, underestimate sea ice decline cmpared with bservatins,” says Nathan Gillett, an Envirnment and Climate Change Canada scientist.
