Accrding t a recent study, lking at art can light up the pleasure centre in the brain and release dpamine, the feel-gd chemical——which is why visiting a gallery can be a valuable act f self-care.
Nttingham-based art psychtherapist Sfie Dbbelaere agrees that ging t a gallery t view art can be a pwerful healing (治愈) experience. “When we lk at art, we cnnect with ur humanity, and therefre are pulled int dialgue with smething utside f urselves,” she says. “This can help us feel cnnected and like we are part f smething imprtant.”
We live in a fast-paced culture, ften cnsuming great wrks f art as quickly as we d cntent n ur phnes. But the act f engaging with art ften disbey ur wn deadlines and bundaries f time, inviting us t lk a little lnger. Next time yu g t a gallery, try practicing “slw lking”, spending several minutes r even hurs thinking ver just ne piece. Galleries are full f amazing wrks, but bserving just ne n a deeper level can be incredibly meaningful.
Accrding t a recent study, althugh 95% f UK adults agree that visiting museums and galleries is beneficial, 40% f us visit them less than nce a year—which is especially regretful as s many f these incredible spaces and artwrks, including the main cllectins in the Tate galleries, are cmpletely free t view and pen t all. “These glmy (阴沉的) winter mnths are the perfect time t get lst in ur free displays, especially if yu've never visited befre,” says Hindsb.

Passive learning and active learning are tw ttally different patterns f learning in the wrld f teaching. Traditinally, learning has been mstly passive in nature. Hwever, in the last 2-3 decades, there has been a push t encurage active learning in the classrm. Passive learning refers t learning in which the student des little t acquire knwledge. The mst cmmn frm f passive learning is direct instructin. In passive learning, the student is viewed as an empty cntainer f knwledge that the teacher must fill with his r her knwledge. Freire called this pattern f learning banking educatin as the student serves as an accunt in which the teacher r banker places knwledge r mney. There's a heavy stress n memrizing infrmatin r knwledge. The student shuld take ntes and be ready t repeat what the teacher has said. The teacher is the wise man n the stage.
Passive learning always sunds bad but smetimes it can be beneficial. When peple have n frmer knwledge f a subject, passive learning can prvide a fundatin fr future active learning activities.
Active learning is learning in which the student is actively invlved in the learning prcess. Cmmn examples f this learning pattern include any frm f discussin in the classrm.
Active learning encurages students t use their current knwledge t build new understanding. There's a reductin f lecturing in an active learning classrm. Rather, students interact with each ther and the teacher t develp their understanding f the cntent. Active learning als faces sme challenges. One is that active learning is time-cnsuming. Develping activities and leading discussins can frce the class t mve slwer. If the curse cvers a large amunt f cntent, this can be challenging fr teachers.
In cnclusin, there's rm in the wrld f educatin fr bth passive and active learning. But t much reliance n either ne will prbably be a disadvantage fr students.
    28. What's the disadvantage f banking educatin?
    A. Failing t make classes mve quickly.
    B. Weakening teachers' interest in educatin.
    C. Fcusing t much n memrizing knwledge.
    D. Causing bad relatinships between teachers and students.
    29. When des passive learning happen?
    A. When learning a new lessn.
    B. When writing abut reflectin.
    C. When answering a teacher's questin.
    D. When planning active learning activities.
    30. Which wuld the authr mst prbably agree with?
    A. Parents shuld supprt teachers' educatin.
    B. Teachers shuldn't bther students' learning prcess.
    C. We must make passive learning disappear frm classes.
    D. We shuld balance passive learning and active learning.
    31. What des the underlined wrd “time-cnsuming” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Taking t much time. B. Highly effective.
    C. Making n difference. D. Rather expensive.
    D
Since her retirement, an ld family friend has begun visually jurnaling her travels. She isn't an “artist”, but that desn't reduce her jy in her experiences r the truth and appeal f her sketches (素描). It was inspiring and I tk it as a gd idea fr later. When I saw the recent Van der Weel and Van der Meer ( 2024) study abut handwriting and cgnitive activatin (认知激活), I thught abut my friend, the passage f time, and aging and realized that it was time t hunt up all my media ( pens, pencils, waterclrs, bund jurnals, and sketchpads) and shift sme activities frm keybard t paper as an investment in brain health.
Van der Weel and Van der Meer fund writing by hand (rather than tapping away n yur keybard) increases brain cnnectivity. It may be time t cnsider deleting sme f thse list-making and jurnal apps frm yur phne and return t paper and ntebks. Healthy media use f any kind is, after all, abut balance. I realized that I write very little by hand but if ding s activates the whle brain, then it may jin the list f activities, like ding crsswrd puzzles and learning a new language, which help delay cgnitive decline.
Writing helps peple prcess life's emtinal ups and dwns thrugh sense-making—the greater the cgnitive effrt t find meaning, the greater appreciatin f the benefits and imprved md. Meaning and psitive emtins are central t well-being.
Hwever, I had never cnsidered the physical act f handwriting as a brain health aging activity. The greater brain activity frm handwriting cmpared t typing is thught t explain why handwritten ntes are linked t increased learning amng students. Learning and memry are bth cgnitive functins. Learning describes hw we gain new skills and knwledge. Memry is hw we stre and bring back what we learn. Aging messes with bth and can prevent new learning as well as the memry f what yu just learned. Hwever, scial, physical, and cgnitively challenging activities have been shwn t reduce the negative effects f aging n cgnitive functin and increase cgnitive reserve (认知储备).
    32. What made the authr begin t ntice brain health?
    A. The passage f time.
    B. The aging f him/her.
    C. The recent study abut handwriting.
    D. His/Her friend's visual travel sketch.
    33. What des paragraph 3 mainly talk abut?
    A. The benefits f writing.
    B. Ups and dwns f life.
    C. The meanings f psitive emtins.
    D. The advantages f writing ver cmputers.
    34. Hw is the last paragraph develped?
    A. By giving advice. B. By listing numbers.
    C. By quting experts' wrds. D. By making a cmparisn.
    35. What may the authr say t students?
    A. Learn by memrizing.
    B. Add handwriting t yur list.
    C. Be aware f the secret f memry.
    D. Jin in the healthy aging activities.
