Peple have lng watched mths (飞蛾) and ther flying insects flck t streetlamps, lights and flames. These insects appear attracted by the light. But a new study suggests they may just lse track f which way is up.
Previus theries say light prbably blinds flying insects s that they get trapped by the light, r maybe they interpret light at night as a place t fly fr a quick escape. Nw the new study suggests flying insects instead turn their backs t the sky’s light t keep their feet pinting tward the grund. Insects naturally turn their backs tward light. But when that light is frm an artificial surce, it may affect their sense f directin, leading t them flying in circles r diving tward the grund.
At a field statin in Csta Rica, Samuel Fabian, an entmlgist frm Imperial Cllege Lndn in England and his teammates set up hanging and standing lights, and then used high-speed cameras t track wild, flying insects including mths and flies. Sme circled the lights endlessly, and thers flew sharply upward, lsing speed until they culdn’t fly any higher. When the light surce pinted up, sme insects turned arund and headed fr the grund. During the flight, the insects always kept the lights at their back even if they’d end up crashing. Crash landings were cmmn when the team lit up a white sheet n the flr. But nt when a white sheet—stretched int a height abve the flr—was bathed in diffuse (漫射) light, much as the sky wuld be, insects flew thrugh the area withut getting trapped by the light.
The team als bserved sme species in a lab. Mths and dragnflies generally behaved like the wild insects, and they kept the light at their backs. Hwever, in the lab, fruit flies, like leander hawk mths—which can fly in the dark—culd fly ver LED lights withut being thrwn ff curse. In the wild, thugh, the mths still crashed. Maybe this is because, Fabian says, the insects can smetimes cntrl their respnse t light, r ver time, they might learn t avid artificial light.
( )28.Why d insects naturally turn their backs tward light?
A.T get clse t the light. B.T escape being caught quickly.
C.T prtect their feet better. D.T track where the grund is.
( )29.What did the researchers find during the new study?

B.Artificial light signaled an escape rute fr the insects.
C.The insects had a better sense f directin.
D.The insects were flying tward the light.
( )30.What is the authr’s purpse in mentining leander hawk mths?
A.T stress the imprtance f the study. B.T prve the previus thery.
C.T tell the existence f the exceptin. D.T explain the flight pattern.
( )31.What culd be the best title fr the text?
A.Artificial Light Makes Insects Mre AdaptableB.Insects May Lse Track near Artificial Light
C.The Ways t Get Rid f Light PllutinD.Insects Learn t Fly fr a Quick Escape

“Every single Ebla health facility acrss the entire Ebla epidemic had a standardized list f all admissins,” says Culbrn. This list included 2,279 cnfirmed Ebla patients, and it recrded whether r nt each persn had been vaccinated befre they gt sick—and if s, when they’d received the vaccine.
Culbrn fund the death rate was 56% amng the unvaccinated. But fr thse wh’d received the vaccine, that rate was cut in half. This was true n matter when smene gt vaccinated befre the appearance f symptms. Additinally, thse wh’d been vaccinated had less virus circulating in their bdies than thse wh hadn’t. S the vaccine played an imprtant rle.
Rebecca Culbrn says she feels buyed by the results—since they ffer clear evidence that peple wh’re at risk f cntracting Ebla shuld be vaccinated early. It’s an pprtunity t cut chains f transmissin (传播) and prevent an utbreak befre it gains speed.
