It was a dark night. Thick, dark, gray cluds had made sure that there was n starlight r mnlight t greet me as I walked ut n my prch. Still, I kept the prch light ff because I didn’t want t be surrunded by bugs and mths(飞蛾) n this sticky summer evening. I std there fr a while letting my eyes adjust t the lack f light. My dg std beside me waiting patiently fr me t start her walk. It was then, thugh, that I saw them. First ne blink f light at the far end f the meadw was fllwed by anther and then anther. I smiled. I recgnised them at nce as my firefly friends, wh always shwed up at this time f year.
I gt s much jy watching them first as a child and then as an adult. They never became dull r bring and they always filled me with delight. When I was little I used t sit in the grass and watch them slwly fly arund blinking n and ff. I never caught and put ne in a jar as sme kids did because I was afraid I might kill it and I never wanted t hurt these messengers(信使) f light. Their time n earth was s brief as it was. A 293-millin-mile jurney f the NASA Perseverance rver(探测器) t Mars ended successfully n February 18, 2021, with a picture-perfect landing inside the Jezer Crater. The car-sized, six-wheeled rver, nicknamed Percy,is the US space agency’s biggest and mst advanced explrer t date. Its primary missin is t search fr signs f ancient micrbial(微生物的) life n Mars.
Landing n Mars is extremely tricky. The Red Planet’s gravitatinal pull causes the appraching spacecraft t g faster t high speeds, while its thin atmsphere—just 1 percent f the Earth’s—des little t help slw it dwn as it appraches the surface.
The scientists had t reduce Percy’s 12,000 mph speed t a safe landing speed f less than five mph—in just six and a half minutes. The target entry angle als had t be precise 12 degrees—any steeper, and the spacecraft wuld burn up; any flatter, and it wuld get lst in space. It is n wnder that the final apprach is ften referred t as the “seven minutes f terrr”.
Upn attaining a manageable speed, Percy briefly flew ver the Martian surface t seek ut the perfect landing spt. Its cmplex map-reading system rapidly scanned the area and matched it with maps in its database t find the best lcatin.
The NASA scientists spent the next tw mnths testing Percy’s scientific instruments. Once ready, the rver wuld begin t carry ut its missin.
“Perseverance is the smartest rbt ever made but cnfirming that micrbial life nce existed carries an unusually large burden f prf,” said Lri Glaze, directr f NASA’s Planetary Science Divisin.“While we’ll learn a lt with the great instruments we have abard the rver, it may very well require the far mre well-equipped labratries and delicate instruments back here n Earth t tell us whether ur samples carry evidence that Mars nce harbured life.”
8.What is the extrardinary challenge fr the rver t land n Mars?
A.The speed reductin.

I tld my friend Graham that I ften cycled tw miles frm my huse t the twn centre but unfrtunately there was a big hill n the rute. He replied,“Yu mean frtunately.” He explained that I shuld be glad f the extra exercise that the hill prvided.
My attitude t the hill has nw changed. I used t cmplain as I apprached it but nw I tell myself the fllwing. This hill will exercise my heart and lungs. It will help me t lse weight and get fit. It will mean that I live lnger. This hill is my friend. Finally I cmfrt myself with the thught f all thse silly peple wh pay mney t g t a gym and sit n statinary exercise bicycles when I can get the same value fr free. I have a smile f satisfactin as I reach the tp f the hill.
Prblems are there t be faced and vercme. We cannt achieve anything with an easy life. Helen Keller was the first deaf and blind persn t gain a university degree. Her activism and writing prved inspiratinal. She wrte,“The character cannt be develped with ease. Only thrugh experiences f suffering can the sul be strengthened, visin cleared, ambitin inspired and success achieved.”
One f the main determinants f success in life is ur attitude twards adversity. Frm time t time we all face hardships, prblems, accidents and difficulties. Sme are f ur wn making but many cnfrnt us thrugh n fault f ur wn. While we cannt chse adversity, we can chse ur attitude twards it.
Duglas Bader was 21 when in 1931 he had bth legs cut ff fllwing a flying accident. He was determined t fly again and went n t becme ne f the leading flying aviatrs in the Battle f Britain with 22 aerial victries ver the Germans. He was an inspiratin t thers during the war. He said,“Dn’t listen t anyne wh tells yu that yu can’t d this r that. That’s nnsense. Make up yur mind, and yu’ll never use crutches r a stick, and then have a g at everything. G t schl, and jin in all the games yu can. G anywhere yu want t. But never, never let them persuade yu that things are t difficult r impssible.”
The bigraphies f great peple are full f examples f hw they tk steps t vercme the difficulties they faced. The cmmn thread is that they did nt becme depressed. They chse their attitude. They chse t be psitive. They tk n the challenge. They wn. Nevertheless, there is still the prblem f hw yu change yur attitude twards adversity.
