In the fibres f the leather were s many memries that had transfrmed me as a persn.
I grabbed my keys and tuched a smth piece f leather. It was a nice cffee brwn and abut 3 inches in length. Every time I tuched it, I wuld think f ne thing—baseball. What shuld we get fr ur kids this hliday? As children get lder, giving them smething they can experience instead f material things makes them happier, accrding t a new research led by Chaplin.
The research cmpares the level f happiness children get frm material things with that frm experiences. The results shws that children aged 3 thrugh 12 get mre happiness frm material things than frm experiences. Hwever, lder children get mre happiness frm experiences than frm their pssessins.
“It means experiences are highly preferred by adlescents, nt just expensive material things,” Chaplin says. She cntinues explaining,“Dn’t get me wrng. Yung children d lve experiences. And given this cncept, theme parks such as Disneyland are being built everywhere. In fact, yung children are excited thrughut the experience. Hwever, fr experiences t prvide lasting happiness, children must be able t recall details f the events.”
Lng after they have unwrapped their tys, there will still be a physical reminder t give them happiness. Hwever, yung children can’t see r tuch experiences after they are ver, making it harder fr them t appreciate experiences after a lng time. There’s an easy fix, thugh, accrding t Chaplin.
“Take pictures r vides f family walks, playing in the snw, and birthday parties,” she says.“Children are likely t appreciate thse experiences mre if there is smething t remind them f the event. Additinally, they’ll be able t learn the scial value f shared experiences.”
Children will remember and appreciate nt nly the birthday gifts they received, but als the time spent with family and friends as they recall the experience thrugh cncrete reminders such as phts and vides.
Since memry is develped ver time, it’s likely that children, especially yung nes, may nt get as much happiness frm past experiences as frm pssessins. But with age, creating new memries and explring new interests may be far mre valuable than getting pssessins.

With lunar explratin rcketing, it pses many challenges. Amng them is a fundamental questin metrlgists(计量学家) wrldwide are wrking t answer: what time is it n the Mn?
The Mn desn’t currently have an independent time. Each lunar missin uses its wn timescale t crdinated universal time, r UTC—the standard against which the earth’s clcks are set. The apprach wrks when the Mn hsts a handful f independent missins, but it will be a prblem when there are multiple craft wrking tgether. Space agencies will als want t track them using satellite navigatin, which relies n precise timing signals.
The mst pressing need fr lunar time cmes frm plans t create a dedicated glbal navigatin satellite system (GNSS) fr the Mn. T tackle this prblem, representatives f space agencies and academic rganizatins wrldwide met in Nvember 2022 t start drafting recmmendatins n hw t define lunar time.
Defining lunar time is nt simple. Accrding t the Special Thery f Relativity, clcks tick slwer in strnger gravitatinal fields. The Mn’s gravitatinal pull is weaker than Earth’s, meaning a lunar clck wuld run faster than an Earth ne.
Defining a lunar standard, with which all clcks are cmpared, will invlve installing at least three master clcks that tick at the Mn’s natural pace, and whse utput is cmbined by an algrithm(算法) t generate a mre accurate ‘virtual’ timepiece.
What happens then depends n which ptin metrlgists chse. They might decide t base lunar time n UTC.The alternative wuld be t use the synthesized(同步) utput f the lunar atmic clcks as the Mn’s wn independent, cntinuus time, and t track its relatinship t UTC.That way, even if the cnnectin with Earth is lst, clcks n the Mn will still agree with each ther, allwing safe navigatin and cmmunicatins.
Setting lunar time is part f a much bigger picture. It will ne day wrk fr the mre-distant planets that space agencies are ultimately targeting, such as Mars.
12.What’s the main idea f paragraph 2?
A.The wrking principle f UTC.
B.The achievements f space missin.
C.The urgency t develp satellite navigatin.
D.The prblem f current lunar timing methd.
13.What is the majr barrier t defining lunar time?
A.Lack f prfessinal guidance.
B.The disagreement amng metrlgists.
C.Different gravitatinal pull n the Mn.
D.The cmplexity f installing master clcks.
14.What’s the advantage f defining the Mn’s independent time?
A.Keeping the clcks n the Mn crrespnding.
B.Preventing spacecraft lsing cnnectin with the Earth.
C.Helping humans land n the mre-distant planets.
D.Making it easier t synchrnize with UTC all the time.
15.What’s the best title f the text?
A.What Time Is It n the Mn?
B.When will Man Settle n the Mn?
C.Lunar explratin: A Career Bund t Revive
D.GNSS: A Mre Precise Lunar Tracking System

These measures are aimed at preserving these relics, as bth human and envirnmental factrs have caused harm.
Turists ften tuch the sculptures, leading t changes in the surface and clur f the figures gradually. 18 And even the mst well-behaved turists can unknwingly cause harm t the relics. Over many centuries, the ancient rcks that make up these grttes slwly crrde(腐蚀) due t the acid cntent f air, water and micrrganisms. 19 Accrding t a study by the China University f Gesciences, the carbn dixide that visitrs breathe ut has made the air mre acid. At the Mga Grttes in Gansu, researchers als fund that micrrganisms brught in unintentinally by visitrs themselves have als led t changes in clur in murals.

14.A 解析 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“The alternative wuld be t use the synthesized utput f the lunar atmic clcks as the Mn’s wn independent, cntinuus time, and t track its relatinship t UTC. That way, even if the cnnectin with Earth is lst, clcks n the Mn will still agree with each ther, allwing safe navigatin and cmmunicatins.”可知, 设定月球独立的时间后, 即使失去与地球的联系, 月球上的时间也可以始终保持一致。故选A项。
15.A 解析 标题归纳题。根据第一段中的“With lunar explratin rcketing, it pses many challenges. Amng them is a fundamental questin metrlgists wrldwide are wrking t answer: what time is it n the Mn?”及下文中分析设定月球时间的必要性、面临的挑战及方案可知, 本文主要是围绕着设定独立月球时间展开, 因此A项“月球上几点了?”与主题内容吻合。故选A项。
【语篇导读】 本文是一篇说明文。由于游客增多会加速文物的损坏, 为控制游客数量, 相关部门发布通知,鼓励游客在不同的时间段参观, 或进行与文物古迹相关的虚拟体验。
