Neurscientists(神经科学家) nw knw that brain maturatin(成熟) ccurs far later than previusly thught. Great changes in brain are still taking place during yung adulthd, especially in the regins that are imprtant fr planning ahead, expecting the future results f ne’s decisins, and cmparing risk and reward. Indeed, sme brain regins d nt reach full maturity until the early 20s. Shuld this new knwledge make us rethink where we draw legal bundaries between kids and adults?
Maybe. But it’s nt as simple as it seems fr tw reasns.
First, different brain regins mature alng with different timetables. There is n single age at which the adlescent brain becmes an adult brain. Systems respnsible fr lgical reasning mature when peple are 16, but thse invlved in self-regulatin are still develping in yung adulthd. This is why 16-year-lds are just as capable as adults when it cmes t permitting infrmed medical papers, but are still immature in ways that reduce their criminal respnsibility, as the Supreme Curt has nted in several recent cases. Using different ages fr different legal bundaries seems strange, but it wuld make neurscientific sense if we did it reasnably.
Secnd, science has never had much influence n these decisins. If it did, we wuldn’t have lived in a sciety that allws teenagers t drive befre they can buy beer. Age bundaries are drawn mainly fr plitical reasns, nt scientific nes. It’s a pity that Neurscience wn’t have much f an impact n plitics althugh it is always crrect.
Children are s changeable in their grwth and hw cultures understand child develpment is s different. It is pintless t try t determine the “right” age f maturatin. The Dutch, fr example, allw children t drink alchl at the age f 16 but nt t drive until they are 19. Even if I firmly believe legal decisins shuld refer t Neurscience seriusly and it’s a gd idea t lwer the drinking age and raise the driving age in the US, I recgnize that the gvernment might never accept it.
4.What can we learn abut brain maturatin accrding t the passage?
A.All the brain areas becme mature at the same time.
B.Scientists’ brain matures much earlier than pliticians’.
C.The regin in charge f lgical reasning isn’t mature until 18.
D.The time f brain maturatin is nt as early as thught befre.
5.What is the authr’s attitude twards Neurscience?
A.Favrable. B.Skeptical.
C.Indifferent.D.Intlerant.
6.What can we infer frm the last paragraph?
A.It’s illegal fr a Dutch by t drive at the age f 16.
B.The culture f the Dutch is much better than that f the USA.
C.It’s f great value t determine the right age f maturatin.
D.The influence f science n law and plicy making is very big.
7.What culd be the best title fr the passage?
A.Shuld Children Learn frm Capable Adults?
B.Can Neurscience Create Mature Scientists?
C.Shuld Neurscience Affect Law Decisins?
D.Can Children Drive and Drink Beer Like Adults?

Different pets were better at prviding cmfrt, sme participants insisted. Many said cats were mre relaxing than dgs, while thers said dgs culd be relaxing as lng as they were “the right kind f dg”. But almst all pets prvided sme srt f cmfrt t their wners when it came t tuch.
Janette Yung, lecturer in health sciences at the University f Suth Australia, and her team uncvered an interesting thing abut the pet-human relatinship. Peple in the study ften spke abut hw their animals demanded t be petted r seemed t take jy in the interactin. This, in turn, made the humans feel gd.
The researchers suggest that pets can be “helpful in reducing tuch deprivatin(匮乏)” and the benefits can cme frm all kinds f pets. This cnnectin can be particularly imprtant in health care and senir care settings where patients and wrkers are less likely t be able t see friends and family; yet tuch is imprtant and can imprve health and happiness.
Pets can als ffer benefits that in sme cases peple can’t ffer. “Relatinships with pets are different t thse with humans,” Yung says. “Animals dn’t judge and are always with us.”
