Scientists have reprted that the sea ice in Antarctica is at a recrd lw level. Antarctica is a great, icy land, surrunded by the huge Suthern Ocean. The ice in Antarctica desn't just cver the land. There’s als a large area f sea ice n the cean’s surface.
Every year, the sea ice at the Suth Ple ges thrugh a cycle. In the summer, the huge sea ice melts t its smallest pint. Over the clder winter mnths, the sea ice grws and grws until it cvers a wide area. Usually, the sea ice cvers the greatest area arund September 23, as winter ends at the Suth Ple.
Scientists have been measuring the area f the sea ice in Antarctica since 1979. Fr mst f this time, Antarctica has seemed t be almst unaffected by the changing weather cnditins experienced in ther parts f the glbe. That began t change arund 2016. Nw, fr several years, the area f Antartica’s sea ice has been shrinking.
This year, the US Natinal Snw and Ice Data Centre (NSIDC) reprted that Antartica’s sea ice cvered its greatest area n September 10—almst tw weeks earlier than nrmal. And the sea ice was at a new recrd lw-nt just by a little bit, but by a lt.
The last time Antartica’s lw sea ice set a recrd at the end f winter was in 1986. And this year, there’s abut 398,000 square miles less sea ice than in 1986.
Scientists are still trying t understand what is driving the change in Antarctica. One likely direct cause fr the change is the rising temperatures f the wrld’s ceans. Ted Scambs, a research scientist at the University f Clrad, says Antarctica’s ice levels have always changed sme, but the sharp lss this year is “pinting twards warmer cean cnditins arund the cntinent.”

We can prbably all agree that it is gd t be kind, nice t be kind, but des it lead t success in life? After all, isn’t kindness abut putting ther peple’s interests first? Desn’t it require self-sacrifice?
Yet cnsider these well-knwn peple: James Timpsn, bss f the Timpsn chain f she repairers; Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister f New Zealand. These tw are clearly “winners” in their fields, and yet bth put kindness at the heart f their strategies fr success. The traditinal idea that yu have t be cruel, driven and fcused n number ne if yu want t achieve success is becming less ppular.
It’s ntable that in the field f business research, kind leadership is mre ften referred t as “ethical” (有道德的) leadership, maybe because it sunds less sft. But whatever yu decided t call it, studies have shwn that it can result in a mre psitive atmsphere at wrk and that emplyees perfrm better t. There’s evidence that even small acts f kindness and cperatin by anyne can make a difference in a wrkplace. An example might be getting the printer mended, rather than leaving it brken fr the next persn t find, r watering the plants in the ffice. These actins aren’t required as part f the jb, but if we carry them ut, the wrking envirnment is a little better fr everyne.
Of curse, there are still plenty f examples f peple wh d well in life, but they are self-centered and unkind t thers. But the pint is that despite what we might see, yu dn’t have t be hard-nsed (不讲情面的) t get n in business r ther highly cmpetitive walks f life. Yu can’t be a winner simply thrugh being kind f curse — yu need mtivatin, devtin and skills t —but there’s mre and mre evidence that shwing sme kindness as yu g after yur gal is n barrier t success.
12. What’s the functin f paragraph 1?
A. T entertain the readersB. T attract readers’ interest
C. T intrduce the tpicD. T infrm readers f the fact
13. What inspiratin can we get frm James Timpsn and Jacinda Arden?
A. They bth think kindness is the deciding factr in success.
B. Being sympathetic can nly benefit peple wrking fr them.
C. Traditinal ideas cannt think highly f kindness t much.
D Being kind cntributes t their success t a certain degree.
14. In the field f business, yu are expected t _______.
A. give a ride t yur senir wrkmate if it’s cnvenient
B. lend mney t yur clleagues whenever they ask
C. leave the brken printer fr the next persn t find
D. always ask fr help frm yur bss when in truble
15. What’s the best title f the passage?
