She uncvered the little-knwn presence in tea f ther chemicals, including fluride and aluminum. And she als mentined a careful study f an 8th-century Chinese article that called fr salt t be added t the biling water.
“The sdium ins (钠离子) in the salt blck ur sense f bitterness,” says Francl, a chemistry prfessr at Bryn Mawr Cllege in Pennsylvania. “S if yu put a tiny bit f salt in—nt enugh t taste—yu make the cup f tea r cffee smther and less bitter.”
The recipe fr a perfect cup f tea, she wrte in her bk, includes a little salt. And fr tea with milk, Francl recmmends warming the milk first, s that it desn’t curdle (凝结) when it hits the ht water.
Sunds harmless, right? But anyne with British friends and lved nes—r wh’s spent mre than five minutes in the United Kingdm—will knw that recipe amunts t blasphemy. Within hurs f the publicatin f Francl’s bk, face palm emjis (捂脸表情) were appearing acrss the British Isles.

The Vynich manuscript (手稿) is a 234-page bk filled with writing in a strange language nw called Vynichese. It als features many strange drawings f unknwn plants, peple and charts. Based n the images alne, it seems t have smething t d with medicine.
The language in the manuscript appears nwhere else and has becme ne f the greatest linguistic riddles f ur day, Since its discvery, it has attracted researchers, been called a hax (骗局), and been the subject f a huge number f articles.
By carbn dating the manuscript, researchers are pretty cnfident that it was cnstructed in the early 1400s. And thrugh the magic f linguistic analysis, mst peple agree that the manuscript is nt a hax. Or, if it is, it’s a very, very cmplex hax.
A paper published in 2016 by cmputer scientist Greg Kndrak and his student Bradley Hauer gained a lt f attentin. Their thery was based n the idea that Vynichese was made with a substitutin cipher (替代密码). That means it was written in a real language, and then each f the letters in that language was replaced by a specific Vynichese letter.
This is where the cmputing pwer cmes in. By having a cmputer cmpare the text f the Vynich manuscript t 380 languages, Kndrak and Hauer ran the substitutin cipher thrugh as many languages as pssible and determined if the text wuld make sense. In the end, they figured ut that the riginal language was Hebrew, and they even translated sme f the text. There are a few prblems with their results, thugh: they cmpared the manuscript t mdern Hebrew, nt 15th-century Hebrew; they had t make “spelling crrectins” fr it t make sense; and, pssibly mst egregius (过分的) f all, they gt their results using a translating app.
Despite all the innvatins in cde-breaking ver the last century, the Vynich manuscript still rejects ur advances. If Vynichese is indeed ever slved, artificial intelligence culd very likely play a rle.

C. Vynichese was made by smebdy.D. Vynichese will attract mre attentin.
10. What can be inferred abut Kndrak’s research?
A. Its samples were insufficient.B. It failed t get the text t make sense.
C. It didn’t determine the riginal language.D. Its cnclusin was nt cnvincing enugh.
11. What des the authr express in the last paragraph?
A. Dubt.B. Expectatin.C. Determinatin.D. Cncern.

The team mnitred 11 giant pandas in six different zs. Sme zs were within the animals’ natural latitudes but in ther cuntries and the thers were utside that range.
Gandia explained, “We recrded giant panda behavir, trying t accunt fr behavirs that are psitive, neutral (中性的) and negative indicatrs fr welfare. S, this wuld include behavirs like play and grming as psitive behavirs, drinking and defecating as neutral maintenance behavirs, and several abnrmal behavirs as negative behavirs, with pacing being the mst cmmn.”
Thse living in zs utside f their hme latitude were fund t be less active and display mre negative behavirs.
