Every summer, as a child, I spent with my parents the annual family hliday, flying away frm ur hme in the West Midlands t their birthplace in Ireland.
I enjyed it, but nce, I behaved differently and left hme. Package turs and lng-distance flights became my idea f a hliday. I then went and ran int an Englishman wh als came f Irish stck, and we bth felt the urge t renew ur knwledge f Ireland.
It was imprtant fr us t discver smething different frm ur childhd visits. S that’s hw we came t drive alng the winding St Jhn’s Pint Peninsula (半岛) in Dnegal, part f Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way, t visit a unique part f the 20th-century histry — the Dnegal Crridr.
When anyne drives t the pint where the land runs ut, he sees giant white stnes fixed firmly in green grass spelling ut “EIRE” and “70”, while the Atlantic wind fiercely blws acrss the headland and the ice-white waves smash int the rcks belw. The meaning behind the stnes? They date back t the Secnd Wrld War when St Jhn’s Pint was number 70 in a ttal f 83 Lk Out Pints (LOPs), bservatin statins set up and maintained by Ireland all arund its cast.
There lies a bit f curius UK-Ireland histry. Althugh Ireland was fficially neutral during the war, the Battle f the Atlantic was being fught clse t Irish shres, and these LOPs, staffed by lcal vlunteers knwn as Cast watchers, passed n infrmatin n activities cnnected with the sea and weather frnts t Lndn.
At St Jhn’s Pint, we were standing right under the Dnegal Crridr, a lng narrw area f airspace in which Ireland ensured safe passage during Wrld War II t planes in the RAF (Ryal Air Frce) frm bases in the UK-gverned Nrth f Ireland. The stne markings acted as reference pints t aircrews.
Standing n this rugh area f land surrunded by the wild and windy cean brught hme t us the cnditins in which the Cast watchers and aircrews in the RAF cperated in a shared histry.
I revlted against my family traditin that summer, and I fulfilled my aim f discvering smething new and absrbed all Dnegal has t ffer: empty glden beaches, mysterius ancient stne circles, flk music and crafts, and tasty fd. I had fallen in lve with Ireland all ver again.

When music cmes n, sme peple are te-lappers r head-bbbers, thers shake their hips, and then there are thse wh let the rhythm mve them t a full-bdy bgie (布吉舞) . But, whatever it is, the way we dance t a beat is s nticeable t an individual that a cmputer can nw identify us by ur unique dancing “fingerprint”.
Researchers at the Centre fr Interdisciplinary Music Research at Finland's University f Jyv skyl have been using mtin capture (动作捕捉) technlgy t study what a persn's dance mves say abut his r her md, persnality, and ability t sympathize. They recently made an accidental discvery while trying t see if an ML machine, a frm f artificial intelligence, wuld be able t identify which kind f music was playing based n hw the participants f the study were dancing. In their study, the researchers mtin captured 73 participants with the AI technlgy while they danced t eight different music genres: electrnica, jazz, metal, pp, rap, reggae, cuntry, and blues. The nly instructin the dancers were given was t mve in a way that felt natural.
But what it culd d was mre shcking. The cmputer was able t crrectly identify which music ne f the participants was dancing t 94 percent f the time, regardless f what kind f music was playing, based n the pattern f a persn's dance style. It was the mvement f participants’ heads, shulders and knees that were imprtant markers in distinguishing between individual. “It seems as thugh a persn’s dance mvements a kind f fingerprint. Each persn has a unique mvement signature that stays the same n matter what kind f music is playing,” said Pasi Saari, a c-authr f the study, in a class.
It’s pssible that dance-recgnitin sftware culd becme smething similar t face-recgnitin sftware but it desn’t seem as practical. Fr nw, researchers say that they are nt as interested in pssible surveillance (监视) uses f this technlgy, but rather what the results f this study say abut hw humans respnd t music. S dn’t wrry abut being identified at nightclub by an AI via yur signature dance mves yet.
28. What did the researchers expect t d with the ML machine?
A. Test the dancers’ flexibility.
B. Make dancers accustmed t the beat.
C. Check the accuracy f mtin capture technlgy.
D. Identify the music using dancers' mves.
29. What might nt help the AI technlgy determine a dancer’s identity?
A. Head mvement.B. Ft mvement.
C. Knee mvement.D. Shulder mvement.
30. What d researchers want t use the results fr?
A. Learning abut the human respnse t music.
B. Prgramming it t wrk at nightclub.
C.Putting it n the applicatin market.
D. Develping a sftware like face-recgnitin.
31. What can be the best title f the text?
A. New AI can identify yu by yur dancing “fingerprint”.
B. New AI can generate yur next dance mve.
C. A dance-recgnitin sftware will becme mre ppular.

Between the last applicatin seasn and the current ne, Swarthmre Cllege, a schl natinally renwned fr its academic rigr, changed the requirements fr students fr admissin int its next freshman class. It made filling ut the prper frms easier.
Swarthmre is hardly alne in the desire t eliminate(消除) bstacles fr a bunty f applicants. Over the last decade, many elite clleges have adjusted their applicatins in ways that remve disincentives and maximize the dds that the number f students cntesting t get in remains rbust — r, even better, grws larger.
In ne sense, that’s an egalitarian (平等主义的) apprach wrth cmpliment and a sensible attempt t be sure that n qualified candidate is missed. But there’s ften a less pure mtive in play. In ur increasingly status-riented sciety, a schl’s reputatin is imprved by a lw acceptance rate, which can even influence hw U. S. News & Wrld Reprt ranks it. And unless a schl is shrinking the size f its students bdy, the nly way t bring its acceptance rate dwn is t get its number f applicants up. S, many clleges methdically generate interest nly t frustrate it. They w applicants fr the purpse f turning them dwn.
And there can be ther justificatins fr what lks like a lsening f applicatin demands. Smith Cllege and several ther similarly prminent clleges n lnger require the SAT r ACT, and Kathleen McCarney, the president f Smith Cllege, said that that’s nt a bid fr mre applicants. It’s a recgnitin that tp scres n thse tests crrelate with high family incme and may say mre abut an applicant’s ecnmic advantages — including, say, private SAT tutring — than abut their academic ptential.
Jim Bck, Swarthmre’s dean f admissins, said that by lightening the essay lad fr its current applicants, the cllege was less cncerned abut increasing its verall number f applicants than abut making sure candidates f great merit didn’t miss ut n Swarthmre and vice versa. He mentined the hypthetical example f a high schl student frm a lw-incme family wh wrks 10 r mre hurs a day and desn’t have sufficient time t d different essays fr different schls.
But will Swarthmre’s applicants this year give quite as much thught regarding whether it is suitable and the right hme fr them? I’m betting nt.
When it’s very easy fr a student t apply t yet ne mre cllege and each schl is simply anther desirable bx f cereal n the tp shelf that he r she is determined t reach. there’s inadequate thught t a tailred match, which is what the admissin prcess shuld strive fr. It’s what the measure f success shuld be.
32. What changes has Swarthmre Cllege made in the applicatin prcess?
A. It simplified its applicatin prcedure.
B. It lwered its requirements fr admissin.
C. It expanded the size f its next freshman class.
D. It eliminated bstacles fr minrity applicants.
33. The underlined wrd “w” (Para.3) is clsest in meaning t _________.
A. pursueB.respectC. impseD. cheat
34. Kathleen McCarney hlds that the results f the SAT r ACT _________.
A. shuld pay an essential rle in the admissins prcess
B. are clsely related t test-takers’ family incme levels
C. reflect test-takers’ academic ptential t a large extent
D. cnceal the uneven distributin f educatinal resurces
35. Accrding t the authr, the success f a schl’s admissin prcess lies in _________.
A. imprving the schl’s reputatin natinwide
B. increasing the verall number f applicants fr the schl
C. recruiting as many genuine students as pssible
D. making suitable matches between applicants and the schl
