Le Grand Meaulnes by Alain Furnier
This was the first bk that really stpped me in my tracks. I lapped up its rmantic but melanchly (忧郁的) stry f the dreamy wrld between childhd and adlescence. I’ve never fund as acute a descriptin f lnging as I did here, and fr many things: fr the mysterius castle, fr lve, and fr freedm. It is an mysterius and dreamy bk. What adds t the magic is that this was the nly stry that Furnier wrte—he died n the frnt line in the early mnths f the First Wrld War.
The Oxfrd English Dictinary
If I culd take just ne bk t a desert island it wuld (f curse) be the cmplete Oxfrd English Dictinary —all 20 vlumes. It may sund predictable, but the OED is anything but. In its pages yu’ll find cmedy, passin, tragedy, and thusands f hidden stries. Even the simplest f wrds have had quite a jurney— “nice”, fr example, has gne frm meaning “stupid” t “pleasant”. Add t that a hst f wrds that have unaccuntably disappeared when—t my mind—we culd really d with them, and yu have entertainment frever. And which f us hasn’t met an “ultracrepidarian”: ne wh lves t talk abut smething they knw nthing abut?
Maus and Maus II by Art Spiegelman
The graphic nvels Maus and Maus Ⅱ by the American cartnist Art Spiegelman are nt easy reads, but they’re imprtant nes. They’re really a tale within a tale, in which the narratr (叙述者) interviews his father abut his experiences f the Hlcaust and his liberatin frm a cncentratin camp. Here the Nazis are drawn as cats, and Jews are mice. Overarching it all is an unfrgettable tale f a sn’s relatinship with his brken father. Given that German has always been my first lve, it felt necessary t read these bks. Spiegelman takes the unspeakable and gives it an immediacy I’ll never frget.

When “Dragn Ball” was first published in 1984, it was an immediate hit, becming ne f the best-selling manga series f all time. It sld mre than 260millin cpies wrldwide, accrding t Tei Animatin, the studi that prduced the anime adaptatin. “Dragn Ball” was serialized in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shnen Jump until 1995. In the year after the series ended, the magazine lst abut ne millin f its six millin readers, accrding t “A Histry f Mdern Manga”.

There are a lt f gd and lgical reasns nt t say what yu think, especially when thers disagree. Offending peple isn’t nice, and it can lead t scial cnsequences. Ndding alng might seem practical r charitable, despite the fact that yu are screaming disagreement n the inside. Hwever, the true act f charity is t say what yu really think. Yur cmmitting t cmplete hnesty can be an act f lve.
One f my friends takes hnesty t the extreme. He calls talks with thers that get t the cmplete truth f things, even difficult admissins in views, “lve cnversatins”. Once tw peple have such a cnversatin, his thery ges, they can understand each ther and act accrdingly. As a philsphical matter, my friend’s belief f “lve cnversatins” is Kantian. The German philspher Kant argued that lying t thers prevents them frm making chices based n the truth, which is cntradictry with friendship and lve.
In the 1990s, Brad Blantn argued when the truth is hard t accept, telling it can have csts, including scial disapprval and brken relatinships. But it is wrth the cnsequences because it can reduce stress, deepen cnnectins with thers, and reduce emtinal reactivity.
Bth sides can’t be right here. Either Kant, Blantn, and my friend are embracing a faulty thery, r ur sciety is missing a big pprtunity fr mral grwth. Yu might say that little white lies are a sciety lubricant (润滑剂). They can even seem virtuus. After telling a white lie, I smetimes pat myself n the back, turning my evil int a virtue inside my wn head. Sme lies might make life easier, but they dn’t necessarily make life happier. I wuldn’t want my wife t tell me what she thinks I want t hear, as if we were strangers aviding cnflict, and finding ut that she had dne s wuld make me feel distrusted and therefre hurt ur relatinship. I dn’t want a stranger t tell me she likes my writing if she desn’t, because unreal cmpliments make me suspicius.
8. What can we learn frm “my friend” in Paragraph 2?
A. He admits ther’s views with great hnest.B. He practices Kant’s philsphical theries.
C. He lves t discuss philsphy with thers.D. He prevents himself frm difficult chices.
9. Brad Blantn fund telling the truth ________.
A. stressful and emtinalB. unacceptable and harmful
C. thughtless but curageusD. challenging but deserving
10. Why is his wife mentined in the last paragraph?
A. T distinguish his wife frm a stranger.B. T shw his wife’s hnesty and virtue.
C. T argue fr the imprtance f frankness.D. T stress aviding suspicin in marriage.
11. Which statement des the authr prbably agree with?
A. Telling the truth can be an act f lve.B. The rute t happier life lies in lies.

P. H. Hanes, funder f HanesBrands, came up with retail price in the 1920s. That allwed him t use ads in publicatins acrss America t discurage distributrs frm unfairly raising the price f his knitted underwear. Even tday many American shpkeepers stick t manufacturers’ recmmended prices, as much as they wuld lve t raise them t ffset the inflatinary (通货膨胀) pressures n their ther csts. A grwing number, thugh, resrt t mre cmplicated pricing techniques.
Getting retail price right can be tricky. Set prices t high and yu risk lsing custmers; set them t lw and yu leave mney n the table. Retailers have histrically used rules f thumb, such as adding a fixed margin (差额) n tp f csts r matching what cmpetitrs charge. As energy, labur and ther inputs g thrugh the rf, they can n lnger affrd t treat pricing as an afterthught. T gain an edge, shpkeepers have been turning t price-ptimisatin systems.
At their cre are mathematical mdels that use deal data t estimate price flexibility—hw much demand increases as the price falls and vice versa—fr thusands f prducts. Price-sensitive items can then be discunted and price-insensitive nes marked up. Merchants can fine-tune the algrithms (算法) t prevent undesirable utcmes.
These systems are becming cleverer thanks t advances in artificial intelligence(AI). The latest crp f AI-pwered nes can spt patterns and relatinships between multiple items. Makers f pricing sftware are incrprating new data surces int their mdels, frm custmers’ tweets t nline prduct reviews, says Dug Fuehne f Pricefx, ne such firm. In February Starbucks, a chain f cffee shps, basted abut its use f analytics and AI t mdel pricing “n an nging basis”. US Fds, a fd distributr, praised its pricing system’s ability t use “ver a dzen different inputs” t bst sales and prfits.
What pricing systems d nt d is lead unavidably t higher prices. Matt Pavich f Revinics, anther pricing-sftware firm, calls this miscnceptin “ne f the biggest misunderstanding” abut prducts like his. Sysc, a big fd distributr which rlled ut new pricing sftware last year, is a case in pint. The firm says the system allws it t lwer prices n “key value items”—as price-sensitive bestsellers are knwn in the trade—and raise them n ther prducts. It can thus increase prfits by expanding sales while maintaining margins.
12. What des the expressin “leave mney n the table” in Paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. D nt match the cmpetitr’s prices.B. D nt maintain a reasnable sales and prfits.
C. D nt address the pressure n extra expenses.D. D nt reach an agreement in price negtiatin.
13. Hw d the price-ptimisatin systems wrk?
A. Setting fixed prices fr all prducts.B. Adjusting prices based n demands.
C. Cnstructing discunt mdels by AI.D. Capitalizing n custmers’ scial media data.
14. What des Matt Pavich think f the price-ptimisatin system?
A. It hits the sweet pint.B. It cuts a lng stry shrt.
C. It runs cunter t its target.D. It cmpares apples and ranges.
15. What’s the best title fr this text?
A. Fair r Unfair Price: Nt a Questin fr AI
B. Price Setting AI: Maintaining Great Balance
C. Retail Price Evlves: Frm Experience t Science
D. Technlgical Business: Cmpanies Use AI t Set Prices
