My greatest regret in life is that I failed t tell my superb teachers hw much they cntributed t my early educatin.
Ruth Hammerman taught English t the eighth-graders. She was the first t shw me the rules f what Evelyn Waugh called ur “rich and delicate language.” She was a n-nnsense instructr. Unlike cmmn teachers, she diagramed (用图表展示) sentences s we culd knw the grammar rules. She never seemed t be tired f the simple pleasures f sharing her learning.
Under her influence, I had the strng belief that language needs t be well-spken and prperly written. Yet ver the years I never made the effrt t find her and t express my thankfulness fr what she did fr me. Tw years after being in her class, I began the study f Latin and French, and the fundatin she prvided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never lked back.
In high schl I tk advanced French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finest teacher I have ever experienced at any level. Mr. Miller brught t his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis. Reading “Phèdre”, Racine’s classic play, he asked us t nte there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pinted ut the care Racine devted t structure. Years later I made the same pint—giving Mr. Miller credit—in a cllege French class, and my prfessr was surprised by my understanding f the play. Mr. Miller taught us t enjy literature with particular pints f view. Yet I never made the effrt in later years t tell him what he meant t me.
Mr. Miller is certainly lng dead. If she is alive, Miss Hammerman wuld likely be in her 90s. In preparing this article, I tried t find her but was unsuccessful.
I am certain my act is cmmn. Peple ften frget t express lve and thankfulness t their teachers. I ught t have tld Miss Hammerman and Mr. Miller hw much they did fr me. I suppse they knew their wrk was effective because they believed in what they were ding. Nw I appreciate hw special they were.

But there’s an appeal in that weakness. “There’s part f this sickening hrrr f knwing yu’re walking n the edge with this, that I kind f like, knwing that it culd all fall apart at any secnd.” Chast’s designs, such as a wrried man alne in a tiny rwbat, reflect that delicateness.
Traditinal Ukrainian decrated eggs als spke t thse fears. The cmplex patterns were believed t ffer prtectin against evil.
“There’s an ancient legend that as lng as these eggs are made, evil will nt take ver in the wrld,” says Jan Brander, a Canadian egg-painter wh has been painting eggs fr ver 60 years, having learned the art frm her Ukrainian relatives.
Althugh the traditin dates back t 300 B. C., the ld symbls n the eggs still reflect their gd wishes. A decrated egg with a bird n it, given t a yung married cuple, is a wish fr children. A decrated egg thrwn int the field wuld be a wish fr a gd harvest.

Trees shuld nly be pruned(修剪) when there is a gd and clear reasn fr ding s and, frtunately, the number f such reasns is small. When I was a kid, I really wanted t be a painter, but I was never great at it. I was discuraged, because in art classes my paintings were never the mst beautiful. We std in frnt f the class and explained ur technique. I remember lking at ther prtraits thinking, “We were given the same skills, why d theirs lk s prfessinal and mine lks s amateur?”

Yu have t learn hw t channel that energy int smething prductive.” S smetimes I channel that pain int art, int a painting.
Even if the picture desn’t turn ut aesthetically (美学地) pleasing by sciety’s standards, it’s still beautiful that I was able t create smething. My paintings may nt be a Basquiat, but they’re mine, s I lve them anyway.
