The text frm my sn said it all, “Dad, there’s an article yu were brn t write that the wrld is finally ready fr: Bring Back the Handkerchief (手帕)!” As my sn knws, there’s n “bring back” fr me. Fr me, the handkerchief never left.
My mther raised me with several fixed rules. One was that a gentleman always has a clean handkerchief in his right rear pcket, a piece f simple cttn, rughly 15 inches square and less than fur inches when flded. I was a dutiful sn, but as a child, I had been wndering what it was there fr. After 60 years, my bdy weight nw feels wrng if I’m heading ut f the huse with an empty back pcket.
I am sure this habit has smetimes struck friends but in plite cmpany nbdy cmments n smebdy else’s business. Children like my kids think f my hankie ridiculusly ld-fashined and they have their arguments. If yu have t be prepared every day fr allergies r a cld, why nt chse a little packet f tissues (纸巾), which saves yu frm that disgusting business f blwing yur nse in the thing and then stuffing it back in yur pants?
I understand their pint. But a handkerchief is mre durable and has a far wider variety f uses. Can yu grab the handle f a pt that’s biling ver with a Temp tissue? Or d yu recall the cases f skinned knees and drippy nses that hankie wiped? In fact, my wife gave me several new handkerchiefs as gifts. Neither f us can cunt the number f times she wiped her tears at a mvie, r, as it happens, she’s needed t blw her nse.
Yet nt even my mther culd have predicted the hankie’s new rle as an Essential Public Health Appliance. All f us have learnt hw hard it is t fllw advice frm medical experts abut nt tuching yur face. Here is an answer. Use yur hankie. In case f emergency, yur handkerchief can becme a makeshift DIY mask that can be pulled ver yur lwer face like a rbber entering a bank.
And it will certainly give me the chance t lift my chin and lk at my adult children thrugh ne eye, asking in her gd-hearted way, “What d yu have t say nw, smarty-pants?”

Humans are brn t cmpete with ne anther. Peple cmpare hw many “likes” they have n scial media. Billinaires envy multibillinaires. The legendary NASCAR champin Dale Earnhardt nce stated, “Secnd place is just the first lser”.
Althugh the cmpetitive spirit may be as natural as breathing air, it des nt always lead t human prsperity. On the cntrary, left unmanaged, it can create misery and unfrtunate results fr urselves and thers. Frtunately, there is a slutin t this prblem withut unrealistically suggesting that we entirely dispense with ur cmpetitive nature: Instead f always ging fr gld, sht fr the brnze.
T expand n the wisdm f Earnhardt, althugh secnd place may be the first lser, third place can be the real winner — at least when it cmes t happiness and lngevity (长寿). Recent research suggested that the brnze winners appeared cnsistently happier n average than the silver medalists. Regarding the life span f all three medalist categries, it was fund that the athlete whse best perfrmance was silver lived t 72. Gld medalists beat this by a slid fur years, living t 76. But first prize in lngevity went t the brnze medalists, wh lived t 78.
The study had a handy explanatin fr this difference: “Dissatisfactry cmpetitin utcmes may badly affect health.” In ther wrds, silver medalists see themselves as the first lser because they nly lk up t the tp step, while the brnze winners cmpare themselves favrably with all the thers wh never made it nt the pdium (领奖台) at all.
One f the prblems with mst cmpetitins against thers is that it tends t lwer ne’s inner mtivatin, and thus enjyment. Decades ag, researchers shwed this by asking peple t slve puzzles and then measuring the interest they reprted: They fund the puzzles less rewarding when cmpeting against thers rather than against the clck. Simply having a time limit means cmpeting against themselves — which is ften mre fun. The principle at wrk here is that trying t imprve yur wn past perfrmance prvides a sense nt f “winning” but f prgress. And the nly persn t whm yu will have t cmpare yurself is yu.
33. What des the underlined wrds “dispense with” in paragraph 2 prbably mean?
A. Stick t.B. Get rid f.C. Depend n.D. Take charge f.
34. In which situatin will peple be mst likely t feel gd abut themselves?
A. Treat cmpetitins as all r nthing.
B. Aim t utperfrm thers in cmpetitins.
C. Check ut thers’ victries n scial media.
D. Cmpare themselves with thse less frtunate.
35. Accrding t the last paragraph, ___________ prmtes enjyment in tasks.
A. achieving persnal bestsB. making cmparisns with thers
C. gaining public recgnitinD. rewarding neself ccasinally
36. What is the best title fr the text?
A. Always Ging fr GldB. The Victry f Cming in Third
C. Finding Satisfactin in CmparisnD. Secnd Place is Just the First Lser

T the Sweden, there are few smells mre attractive than surströmming, a kind f Swedish fermented fish. T mst nn-Sweden, hwever, there are prbably few smells mre awful — the fish has been described variusly as smelling like sur cat litter, r even drppings-like. In determining which smells peple find pleasant r nt, surströmming suggests culture must play a sizeable part.
New research, hwever, suggests that might nt be the case. Artin Arshamian, a neurscientist at the Karlinska Institute in Sweden, and Asifa Majid, a psychlgist at the University f Oxfrd, began with the expectatin that culture wuld play an imprtant rle in determining pleasant smells. This was nt just because f examples like that f surströmming. They knew frm past experiments by ther researchers that culture was imprtant in determining which srts f faces peple fund beautiful.
T study hw smell and culture relate, the researchers presented ten smells. These smells varied frm herb t isvaleric acid, the chemical respnsible fr smelly scks. Mre in-between smells, which the team thught might have different pinins, included ctanic acid; and ctenl, an earthy smell fund in many mushrms. The cultures ding the smelling varied widely t, including hunters, farmers and city flk.
All 235 participants were asked t rank smells accrding t pleasantness. Cntrary t previus belief, it was fund that pleasantness rankings were remarkably cnsistent (一致的) regardless f where peple came frm. Isvaleric acid was hated by the vast majrity, nly eight giving it a scre f l t 3 (1 was very pleasant and 10 was very unpleasant). On the ther hand, mre than 190 peple gave herb a scre f l t 3. Overall, the chemical cmpsitin f the smells explained 41 % f the reactins that participants had. In cntrast, cultural upbringing accunted fr just 6 %.
Even s, while culture didn’t shape perceptins (感知) f smells in the way that it shapes perceptins f faces, the researchers did find an “eye f the behlder” effect. Persnal preference learned frm the utside, as the researchers suggest, accunted fr 54 % f the difference in which smells peple liked.
What d we knw abut surströmming in the first paragraph?
It’s attractive t peple arund the wrld.
Swedish peple regard its smell pleasant.
It plays an imprtant rle in different cultures.
Its ppularity is mainly decided by culture.
38. Which smell ranked first in terms f pleasantness?
A. Octenl. B. Herb.
C. Octanic acid. D. Isvalericacid.
39. What plays a majr rle in the appreciatin f smells?
A. Persnal taste.B. Cultural backgrund.
C. Life experience.D. Chemical cmpsitin.
40. What message des the text cmmunicate?
A. Yu are shaped by the smell yu prefer.
B. Culture plays an imprtant rle in smells.
