It was a cld May mrning when I received an intriguing (有趣的) email frm an ld high schl friend inviting me t jin a 10-day all-girls surf trip. I knew I had t say yes.

If there’s ne thing I’ve learned ver my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve dne befre. It seems like we pride urselves n becming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen int, knwing mre and mre abut less and less.
Nw, in thery, this is a great strategy, as it allws yu t becme really, really gd at ne particular thing, but it als kind f ends up leaving sme skills lacking.
I met my new surfing cmpanins n the grass f the htel lawn in a small surf twn called Ericeira. Despite ur different persnalities and backgrunds, we were all united in a relentless desire t challenge urselves, learn, tackle and grw.
The shres at Ericeira, where the beginners learn t surf, are shallw and cvered with slippery rcks. They make fr sfter waves but are difficult t navigate.
Guided by ur amazing caches, tgether, we faced the waves. Smetimes, it pured with rain, and the waves crashed arund us, but we were still ut there. And with every slip and fall, wrds f encuragement filled the air.
Hnestly, I prbably spent mst f my days frzen t the bne, but that didn’t matter because a new level f genuine jy and persnal achievement had been unlcked. Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can cme frm ding badly at smething new, and the pride that develps when yu finally manage t grasp smething yu’ve been wrking n.
While surfing might nt be my calling, trying it ut inspired me t take mre risks in life, t step utside f my cmfrt zne and t never stp believing in myself. Yu never knw what yu’re capable f if yu dn’t g ut there and try.

And with every slip and fall, wrds f encuragement filled the air.(在我们出色的教练的带领下,我们一起面对海浪。 和第九段“Hnestly, I prbably spent mst f my days frzen t the bne, but that didn’t matter because a new level f genuine jy and persnal achievement had been unlcked. Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can cme frm ding badly at smething new, and the pride that develps when yu finally manage t grasp smething yu’ve been wrking n.(老实说,我可能大部分时间都僵在骨头上,但这并不重要,因为真正的快乐和个人成就的新水平已经被解锁了。 故选A。

Imagine tw applicants are in a jb interview: ne expresses a great passin fr the wrk, while the ther pints t family encuragement t pursue that field. Which applicant has a better chance f succeeding? Cnventinal wisdm suggests it wuld be the ne wh has a strng persnal passin.
Passin is nt a universally pwerful basis f achievement, but the culture a persn grew up in matters a lt. That means universities and cmpanies that frequently rely n passin in candidates are pretermitting talented students and emplyees.
It seems that passin is a much strnger predictr f achievement in certain scieties than thers. “This leads t a blind spt amng interviewers and is unfair t peple frm diverse backgrunds,” said Xingyu Li, the lead authr f a new study. As a persn cming frm a cllectivist (集体主义的) sciety, he knws exactly hw peple feel when they are rejected just because they are seemingly nt as passinate as thers. This research is nvel fr its using big data t cmpare a wider range f culturally diverse scieties.
The researchers cllected the data including scres frm 1.2 millin high schl students acrss 59 cuntries. They fund thse wh felt passinate abut science, reading, r ther subjects were mre likely t be given better scres. This is quite true in individualist scieties such as the United States and Australia, cmpared with cllectivist cuntries such as China, Thailand, and Clmbia, where the students felt that having family supprt fr their interest was imprtant.
Individualist cuntries regard the self as the surce f mtivatin. Fr example, in the United States, ding well because f what thers expect might seem t be evidence f a lack f ptential. In cllectivist scieties, the self is inter-dependent, part f a web f relatins, rles, and respnsibilities. Fr instance, in the mvie The Grandmaster, the legendary martial arts teacher Ip Man never said that he had a persnal passin fr kung fu. Rather, his drive t attain mastery came frm the desire t live up t what his belt symblized t his teacher and sciety.
The findings pen up the pssibility f designing educatinal interventins that dn’t rely nly n the western idea f cultivating (培育) passin. That helps better unlck the ptential f ur students and wrkfrce.
46.Wh is mre likely t succeed in a jb interview accrding t mst emplyers?
A.Thse wh have a web f relatins.B.Thse wh are familiar with the cmpany.
C.Thse wh gain much family encuragement.D.Thse wh have great enthusiasm fr the psitin.

A.Neglecting.B.Harvesting.C.Explring.D.Defending.
48.What might be Xingyu Li’s team’s purpse f cnducting the research?
A.T clarify the link between students’ passin and academic perfrmance.
B.T encurage peple t learn the cultures f different cuntries.
C.T win peple frm different cultural cntexts mre chances f admissin
D.T shw the imprtance f big data in culture-related studies at particular.
49.Wh tends t regard family respnsibility as a surce f mtivatin?
A.An American.B.A Clmbian.C.An Australian.D.A Canadian.
50.What des the authr intend t illustrate in Paragraph 5?
A.The mdel f mtivatin varies frm culture t culture.
B.The negative effects f scietal expectatins n individuals.
C.The rle f self-realizatin matters in a persn’s success and well-being.
D.The typical persnality types in individualist cuntries and cllectivist nes.
46.D 47.A 48.C 49.B 50.A
根据第一段中的“Which applicant has a better chance f succeeding? Cnventinal wisdm suggests it wuld be the ne wh has a strng persnal passin.(哪位申请人成功的几率更大?传统观点认为,这将是那个有强烈个人激情的人。)”可推知,大多数雇主都倾向于选择对岗位有极大激情的人。故选D。
47.词义猜测题。根据画线词前一句“Passin is nt a universally pwerful basis f achievement, but the culture a persn grew up in matters a lt.(激情并不是成就的普遍有力基础,但一个人成长的文化很重要。)” 根据“universities and cmpanies that frequently rely n passin in candidates”和“talented students and emplyees”可推测出,这里表示的是频繁信赖申请人激情的大学和公司会忽视有才华的学生和员工,pretermitting表示“忽视”,与neglecting(忽视)意思相近。故选A。
根据第三段中的“‘This leads t a blind spt amng interviewers and is unfair t peple frm diverse backgrunds,’ said Xingyu Li, the lead authr f a new study. As a persn cming frm a cllectivist (集体主义的) sciety, he knws exactly hw peple feel when they are rejected just because they are seemingly nt as passinate as thers.(一项新研究的主要作者李兴宇说:‘这导致了面试官的盲点,对来自不同背景的人来说是不公平的。’作为一个来自集体主义社会的人,他非常清楚当人们因为看起来没有其他人那么有激情而被拒绝时的感受。)”可知,李兴宇认为只依靠激情就做出判断对来自不同背景的申请人来说不公平,他本人也来自集体主义社会,非常了解人们因为看起来缺乏激情而被拒绝录用的感受,由此可推测出,他进行这项研究的目的是为来自不同文化背景的人们争取更多录用机会。故选C。
49.推理判断题。根据第四段中的“This is quite true in individualist scieties such as the United States and Australia, cmpared with cllectivist cuntries such as China, Thailand, and Clmbia, where the students felt that having family supprt fr their interest was imprtant.(与中国、泰国和哥伦比亚等集体主义国家相比,美国和澳大利亚等个人主义社会的情况更是如此,在这些集体主义国家,学生们认为家庭支持对他们的兴趣很重要。)”和第五段中的“In cllectivist scieties, the self is inter-dependent, part f a web f relatins, rles, and respnsibilities.(在集体主义社会中,自我是相互依存的,是关系网、角色网和责任网的一部分。)”
根据第五段中的“Individualist cuntries regard the self as the surce f mtivatin.(个人主义国家把自我视为动力的源泉。)”和“In cllectivist scieties, the self is inter-dependent, part f a web f relatins, rles, and respnsibilities.(在集体主义社会中,自我是相互依存的,是关系网、角色网和责任网的一部分。)” 故选A。

根据文章全文,尤其是最后一段“In summary, while the pursuit f knwledge is valuable, it’s crucial nt t let it becme a barrier t actin. Learning shuld be a stepping stne t ding, nt an end in itself. It’s thrugh the interplay f gathering knwledge and applying it that we can truly prgress twards ur aspiratins.(总之,虽然追求知识是有价值的,但重要的是不要让它成为行动的障碍。学习应该是行动的垫脚石,而不是目的本身。只有通过收集知识和应用知识的相互作用,我们才能真正朝着我们的愿望前进)”可知,本文介绍在学习过程中,应将信息和实践相结合,这样能更好地实现目标。B选项“学与做的和谐”与本文主旨相符。故选B项。

这是一篇记叙文。文章主要叙述了舞蹈演员Suanne Laqueur成功自助出版小说的经历。
56.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“But when her mther was ready t retire and an pprtunity pened fr Laqueur t take ver the studi, she realized she had n interest in taking n the business side f her art: ‘Owning a studi is a lt f wrk — financially, lgistically. I lve the teaching, the chregraphing (编舞), the staging, but I didn’t want t wn it.’(但当她的母亲准备退休,Laqueur有机会接管工作室时,她意识到自己没有兴趣从事艺术的商业方面的工作:‘拥有一个工作室需要很多工作——从财务上和后勤上。我喜欢这里的教学、编舞和舞台,但我不想拥有它。’)”可知,Laqueur不接管她母亲的工作室是因为她对于经营工作室没有兴趣,她讨厌艺术的商业一面,拥有一家工作室需要付出很多努力——无论是在财务上还是后勤上,故答案为She didn’t have interest in running the studi./She disliked hated the business side f art./Owning a studi is much wrk-financially, lgistically.
根据第三段中“Yet Laqueur’s disinterest in running the studi changed when she became a self-published authr.(然而,当Laqueur成为一名自助出版的作家后,她对经营工作室的兴趣发生了变化)”可知,Laqueur成为一名自助出版的作家后对经营工作室的兴趣发生了变化,故答案为Self-publishing her nvel(s)./ She became a self-published authr./She self-published her nvel(s).
划线短语上文“Gradually, readers pay mre attentin t her wrks.(渐渐地,读者越来越关注她的作品)”提到,读者越来越关注她的作品,结合划线短语所在句中“In particular(尤其是)”以及“wn the grand prize at the 25th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Bk Awards, tpping mre than 2, 300 entries(在第25届《作家文摘》年度自出版图书奖上,从2300多部作品中脱颖而出,获得了大奖)”可知,此处是举例说明她的作品备受关注,stle the shw意为“引起人们的关注”,故答案为Attracted/Caught/Captured/Drew peple’s attentin.
根据最后一段“‘Yu have t write the mst truthful stry t yu, and I think self-publishing allws that freedm,’ she says, ‘If yu wrk with traditinal publishing, it’s mre abut what’s marketable. There are trade-ffs, which everyne will tell yu, but by self-publishing I have cntrl f the bk, I have cntrl f the stry, and I’m cl with that.’(‘你必须为自己写最真实的故事,我认为自助出版允许这种自由,’她说,‘如果你与传统出版合作,更多的是关于什么是有市场的。每个人都会告诉你,这是有利有弊的,但通过自助出版,我可以控制这本书,我可以控制这个故事,我对此很满意。’)”可知,Laqueur喜欢自助出版是因为她有自由写出最真实的故事,可以控制书和故事,不需要考虑市场和权衡,故答案为She has the freedm t write the mst truthful stry./She has cntrl f the bk and the stry./She desn’t have t cnsider the market and trade-ffs.
根据第一段“Fr mst f her life, Suanne Laqueur’s passin fr strytelling was shwn n the dance flr.(在她生命的大部分时间里,Suanne Laqueur对讲故事的热情都表现在舞池里)”和第三段中“During the prcess, she realized that fllwing her true passin — telling stries thrugh writing — made the business f the art wrthwhile, and wning that business meant she culd direct her writing career hwever she chse.(在这个过程中,她意识到,追随自己真正的热情——通过写作讲故事——让艺术事业变得有价值,拥有这项事业意味着她可以随心所欲地指导自己的写作生涯)”可知,Suanne Laqueur凭借对写作的热情成功地自助出版小说,作品备受关注并获得很多奖项,因此我认为在职业生涯中热情或者兴趣最重要,因为如果我对我的工作有很大的热情,我就会更努力地工作,更有可能成功。 Passin/Interest. If I have a great passin fr my jb, I will wrk harder and be mre likely t succeed.
