When she was 61, Sian Davies decided t rw acrss the Atlantic Ocean. In March 2021, she was ne f the 12 crew members wh set ut n the 3,000-mile jurney frm Tenerife t battle sun, salt and fierce currents. "We wuld rw in three-hur shifts and nly sleep fr an hur r s every six hurs," she says. "Fr the first 15 days, I was seasick, s I hardly ate anything. I was just rwing and cllapsing. I went thrugh sme pretty dark times."
But after 42 days n the water, Davies reached Antigua t becme ne f the nly six wmen in the wrld ver the age f 60 t have rwed acrss an cean. “I was exhausted and I was als s prud f myself," she says.
Davies began rwing when she was 53, after sptting a six-ar (桨) rwing bat in Bristl harbr. Attracted by its size and appearance, she spke t the crew and was encuraged t d a trial run. “As sn as 1l gt n the water, I fll in lve with it," she says. "Feeling yur whle bdy wrking and the fresh air n yur skin is amazing."
It wasn't until 2017, thugh, that her Atlantic plans were brn. Suffering frm a herniated disc (椎间盘突出), she was nly able t crawl ut f bed. “I began thinking f things I culd lk frward t after I had surgery," she says. The findings cme frm an experiment f mre than 3,500 hummingbird flights inside a 12-ft-lng tunnel (通道 ) with a branch at ne end and a feeder at the ther. Mving light patterns cast n the tunnel walls influence hw the hummingbirds see things while flying.
The researchers expected that if the hummingbirds were using visual clues t cntrl their frward flight speed, they wuld see the birds speed r slw with lights cast n the side walls. But instead, it seemed that they had their wn way f knwing hw fast t g fr frward flight. When mving up r dwn, hwever, the birds based their mtr cmmands n the cast light patterns they saw.
This special ability helps hummingbirds fly safely and quickly. The researchers cmpared children in different kindergarten grups. Sme were ffered sensry-based fd educatin, while thers weren't. Children were ffered a snack buffet cntaining different vegetables and fruit t chse frm, and the rescarchers tk phts f their plates t analyse their willingness t chse and cat these fd items.
The findings shw that sensry-based fd educatin increased children's willingness t chse vegetables and fruit, especially amng children whse mthers have a lwer educatinal backgrund. On average, children f lwer educated parents tend t cat less vegetables and fruit. This is hw fd educatin given in the kindergarten can help even ut dietary gap between families."
Anther interesting finding is that the Sapere fd educatin methd als seems t imprve the cating atmsphere in kindergarten grups. This encuraged children wh were picky eaters t chse a mre diverse selectin n their plate," KahkÃnen explains.
Psitive and persnal fd-related experiences gained in the kindergarten can help adjust dietary preferences in a directin that is beneficial fr health. Dietary preferences learned in early childhd ften stick with a persn all the way t adlescence and aduthd.
