In 2017 alne, the financial cst frm glbal weather events was up t 340 billin dllars.
With mre wild weather events happening, peple culdn’t help asking questins: What is happening with the weather? And why? Is this natural, r ur fault? The answer seems t be: a little f bth. Wild weather is natural. But mst scientists hld the same view that human activity has made the Earth warmer. It is this glbal warming that makes heat waves mre likely. The higher temperatures als result in mre water t g int the air, which causes heavier and mre frequent rain. Many scientists als believe glbal warming makes hurricanes and ther strms strnger.
This means we’re likely t see mre wild weather. “But we dn’t have t just stand there and accept it,” says scientist Michael. He and ther experts say we need t stp the Earth frm getting warmer. We als need t be prepared, t d things that will help save lives.

A better early warning system fr tsunamis may sn be pssible with the help f artificial intelligence. AI technlgy can detect very small disturbances in satellite signals when a tsunami’s waves begin t frm, which culd bring felicity t castal cmmunities, prviding warnings lng befre the tsunami hits.
“There is n glbal netwrk fr detecting tsunami waves, and setting up physical hardware, like buy-based systems, is expensive,” says Valentin Cnstantinu at Teran Orbital Crpratin, a satellite manufacturing cmpany based in Flrida. “But we knw that small satellites are just increasing rapidly everywhere.”
Thse GPS satellites are imprtant because they cnstantly exchange radi signals with grund statins. Crucially, the speed f the radi signals is affected by the density (密度) f charged particles (带电粒子) in an area f Earth’s insphere (电离层). Tsunami-caused shck waves travelling up int the atmsphere affect the density f these particles, generating small but measurable changes in the satellite radi signals.
Cnstantinu and his clleagues develped a cmputer prgram t measure changes in the density f these charged particles caused by the frmatin f a tsunami and then transfrmed the data int images that can be analysed by AI mdels. They then tasked the AI with identifying tsunami-related features within the images.
The researchers trained and tested the AI n data frm three earthquake-caused tsunamis: ne that struck Chile in 2010, a 2011 event in Japan and an event that ccurred ff Canada’s west cast in 2012. They then cnfirmed the AI’s perfrmance n data frm a furth tsunami, which was caused by the 2015 Ⅲapel earthquake ff the cast f Chile. This shwed hw well the AI culd distinguish tsunami-related disturbances frm nrmal variatins in the insphere.
But Cnstantinu says it remains t be seen if perfrmance based n data frm fur tsunami events can lead t accurate detectin f a mre diverse set f tsunamis and the rarity f huge tsunamis makes it challenging t analyse and predict such events. A truly effective tsunami detectin system wuld als require internatinal cperatin t share data frm satellite statins.
12.What des the underlined wrd “felicity” prbably mean in Paragraph 1?
A. Challenge.B. Welfare.C. Qualificatin.D. Freedm.
13.Why d GPS satellites matter t tsunami detectin?
A. They stay steady in extreme weather cnditins.
B. They can predict the exact lcatin f a cming tsunami.
C. Their signals can directly pass thrugh Earth’s insphere.
D. Their signals can reflect charged particle density changes.
14.What was the data frm the 2015 tsunami used fr?
A. Shwing the damage brught by tsunamis.
B. Prving the accuracy f the AI’s perfrmance.
C. Helping the AI analyse tsunami infrmatin.
D. Offering basic infrmatin n tsunami detectin skills.
15.What may be a suitable title fr the text?
A. AI can spt early signs f a tsunami
B. A tsunami warning system is n the way
C. Satellites play a key rle in glbal cperatin
D. Tsunamis wn’t be a threat t humans in the future
