Baidu, a Chinese search engine and artificial intelligence firm, annunced its latest electric autnmus driving vehicle, Apll RT6, n Thursday. The new vehicle is a fully electric vehicle with a steering wheel (方向盘) that can be remved when nt required. It will cst ¥250,000 per unit.
“The steering-wheel-free design allws mre space fr extra seating r ther additins and the massive cst reductin will enable us t put tens f thusands f autnmus vehicles int peratin acrss China,” Rbin Li, c-funder and CEO f Baidu, said at the firm's Baidu Wrld Cnference Thursday. “We are mving twards a future where taking a rbtaxi will be half the cst f taking a taxi tday.”
Baidu already runs Apll G and Apll Mn, taxi services using self-driving rbtaxis with safety staff seated in the driver r passenger seat. They have been in peratin in big cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhu, althugh the service is limited t specific areas. The new vehicle will sn jin thse rbtaxis.
The RT6 has reached the industry's Level 4 ut f five pssible levels f technlgy. That means its systems can perate withut a driver but must be pre-laded with a detailed map, thus limiting the areas where the vehicles can perate. Lwer levels f self-driving technlgy have been available fr decades. Fr example, many Level-3 vehicles allw hands-free highway driving.
