Ever wnder what happens t spacecraft after they get launched t space? Well, that is where my jb as an instrument peratins engineer cmes in. My jb cnsists f planning, generating, and perating scientific instruments in-flight. I am grateful fr having wrked n missins at Saturn, the Mn, and ur wn planet Earth.
When I was a high-schler, I was unsure f what cllege I wanted t attend, r what majr I wanted t chse. After receiving an email frm a cllege called Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy (MIT), I decided t apply t a summer prgram they were ffering with the encuragement f my mm. After participating in that prgram, I knew that MIT was the right university fr me. The passinate students and bundless pprtunities develped a feeling f belnging in me that led me t apply and eventually get accepted.
The mst exciting and fulfilling part f being an engineer is that I am able t wrk n prjects that benefit humanity. When peple think f the space industry, they picture the uter reaches f ur slar system. What they may nt imagine is the great bdy f wrk being dne t study ur wn hme-Earth. I am thankful t have a career that allws me t cmmit myself t that respnsibility.
The highlight f my career has been witnessing the end f the Cassini missin t Saturn. Sme f the peple n the team had been wrking n the missin fr lnger than I had been alive, but they still treated me as ne f their wn. I was given the pprtunity t perate the cameras that wuld catch breathtaking images f the planet. And when the Cassini spacecraft had run ut f fuel, I quickly learned that it was nt just the end f the missin, but the end f a team. The night we watched with bittersweet lnging as its signal faded t nthing is smething that I will always keep in my memries. And while Cassini will be remembered fr its histric cntributins, what I will remember it fr is the team it brught tgether.
My friends ften ask why a girl culd achieve all these. I always grew up a big fan f fictin. I read the Harry Ptter bks and lved anything fantasy. I realized that a cmmn theme f her stries is that the her must always make a chice t start their adventure. If yu dn’t pick up the swrd in yur wn stry because yu are afraid f what may happen next, yu risk nt having a stry at all.
24.Why did the authr apply t MIT?
A.The majrs in MIT interested her.B.Her mther urged her t g t MIT.
C.She set this gal as a high-schler.D.A summer prgram made her lve MIT.

Plants need sunlight fr phtsynthesis (光合作用), the prcess f absrbing energy frm light t create their wn fd frm carbn dixide and water. That’s why plants grw and thrive in the warmer mnths when there is mre daylight and are drmant in the clder mnths.
But this prcess isn’t particularly efficient and nly ne percent f the energy cntained in sunlight actually ends up in the plant, accrding t a news release frm the University f Califrnia, Riverside. Nw scientists at the university have fund a way t bypass the need fr natural phtsynthesis and t create fd by using artificial phtsynthesis. This allws plants t grw in cmplete darkness. “With ur apprach we sught t identify a new way f prducing fd that culd break thrugh the limits nrmally impsed by bilgical phtsynthesis,” crrespnding authr Rbert Jinkersn, a UCR assistant prfessr f chemical and envirnmental engineering said in the news release.
The researchers devted t artificial phtsynthesis used a tw-step electrcatalytic (电催化) prcess t cnvent CO2, water, and electricity int acetate (醋酸盐) — the main ingredient f vinegar — that the plant rganisms cnsumed t grw. The researchers adjusted the electrlyzer, a device that uses electricity t supprt the grwth f fd prducing rganisms. t cme up with the highest levels f acetate ever prduced by this methd.
The new artificial phtsynthesis methd culd be up t 18 times mre efficient than sunlight. Experiments shwed that a large range f fd prducing rganisms culd be grwn using this acetate. “We were able t grw fd prducing rganisms withut any cntributins frm bilgical phtsynthesis,” said Elizabeth Hann, a dctral candidate in the Jinkersn lab and c-lead authr f the study. “This technlgy is a mre efficient methd f turning slar energy int fd, as cmpared t fd prductin that relics n bilgical phtsynthesis,” she said.
By eliminating the need fr sunlight, he ptential f this methd t increase fd supply in regins with less - than ideal grwing cnditins is almst endless, accrding t New Atlas.
Fd will be able t be grwn almst anywhere, including in space and n ther planets. “Imagine smeday giant vessels grwing tmat plants in the dark and n Mars — hw much easier wuld that be fr future Martians?” c-authr Martha Orzc-Cárdenas, directr f the UCR Plant Transfrmatin Research Center said.
While this may be years ff, the ptential t grw fd using artificial phtsynthesis has great value in feeding a hungry place where the ppulatin is grwing and arable land shrinking. This new methd increases the efficiency f fd prductin using less land and minimizes the envirnmental impact n the planet.
28.What des the underlined wrd “drmant” in Paragraph 1 mst prbably mean?
A.Fresh.B.Resting.C.Healthy.D.Nrmal.
29.What is Paragraph 3 mainly abut?
A.The prcess f artificial phtsynthesis.
B.The cntributin f natural phtsynthesis.
C.The efficiency f sunlight n plant rganisms.
D.The wide range f applicatins f artificial phtsynthesis.
30.Accrding t Martha Orzc-Cárdenas, artificial phtsynthesis is .
A.accurateB.dangerusC.prmisingD.impractical
31.What can we learn frm the passage?
A.Bilgical phtsynthesis can help prduce higher quality fd.
B.Bilgical phtsynthesis is mre efficient in turning slar energy int fd.
C.Using artificial phtsynthesis may decrease the efficiency f fd prductin.
D.Using artificial phtsynthesis t grw fd can reduce envirnmental influence.

Virtual reality is rapidly changing the way educatin is being imparted in sme f the leading schls wrldwide. The transfer f knwledge is n lnger restricted t pen and paper, blackbard and chalk, and PwerPint presentatins. It has taken a turn twards experience-based learning in its truest frm. This is s because, with virtual reality, the bservers are transprted int a whle new wrld which has been designed t prvide visual and tuchable stimuli t them, allwing mre knwledge t be kept in mind.
In recent years, the cncept f virtual reality-based language learning is starting t cme int fcus. In rder t be fluent in any given language, r have a sund grasp f it, yu have t be immersed in an envirnment where it is the primary medium f cmmunicatin. Think f it like this. If yu are learning Spanish in the Netherlands, yu wn’t have adequate expsure t the language, but if yu chse t learn Spanish in Spain, r any ther Spanish – speaking cuntry, yu are far mre likely t succeed, because yu will have cuntless avenues t practice yur language skills in a real wrld setting.
This leads us t an imprtant pint — mst peple wh are learning a freign language are nr expsed t favrable linguistic cnditins like the nes mentined earlier. Virtual reality is seeking t bridge this gap by expsing the subject t a virtual envirnment where their chsen language is the main mde f cmmunicatin.
Since the arrival f user-friendly virtual reality gear, sme applicatins have been designed. Huse f Languages is ne f them. It is already available n the Gear VR. It invlves an animated raccn that is lking fr yu t find certain bjects in a virtual envirnment, whse names wuld be in the language that yu are learning. Often yu will hear the name, r the name will appear as a thught - bubble ver the raccn’s head. Then yu will have t lk thrugh the envirnment t find the bject in questin. There are several envirnments in this VR experience, each with its wn set f animated bjects.
Virtual reality is definitely shwing increasing prmise in the educatinal sectr and the day isn’t far away when it will becme ne f the majr media in educatin. What abut yu? Wuld yu learn a new language in virtual reality?
32.Why des the authr mentin learning Spanish in the Netherlands in Paragraph 2?
A.T state that traveling is helpful fr language learning.
B.T stress the imprtance f the language learning envirnment.
C.T shw that sme virtual reality applicatins are available fr language learning.
D.T infrm us f the favrable learning envirnment fr Spanish in the Netherlands.
33.Hw des the authr develp the passage?
A.By giving examples and using qutatin.
B.By stating the definitin and shwing facts.
C.By presenting an pinin and listing figures.
D.By analyzing the prblem and prviding a slutin.
34.What is the authr’s attitude twards the use f virtual reality in educatin?
A.Negative.B.Psitive.C.Dubtful.D.Neutral.

As a dctr, I can give yu a lt f useful advice abut hw t get healthy and stay that way, but yu dn’t need me t tell yu that exercise is gd fr yu. Staying active can benefit the heart, the waistline, even the mind. 35 Mre than 60% f American adults dn’t exercise regularly, and many say they dn’t exercise at all. Mre than 72 millin are verweight, and almst all f them wuld like t lse the extra punds. S, if exercise is such a gd idea, why dn’t mre peple d it?
36 Even as I write this, I am watching my tw-year-ld run arund in circles. Kids seem t be brn in cnstant mtin, but alng the way that behavir changes.
The slwdwn ccurs fr mst at the beginning f cllege. Academic pressure and lack f rganized sprts are certainly part f the prblem. A bigger part may be lking at life changes as an ccasin t blw up ld rules and nt create new nes in their place. 37 The demands f a new jb usually mean less time at the gym. Hw abut a new marriage? Hw many times have we seen just-married cuples lking a lt heavier in first-anniversary phts than they did in the wedding pictures?
38 Peple wh set general gals, like “I will exercise in my free time,” did a far wrse jb f sticking t that plan than did peple wh made a firm cmmitment, like “I will walk t my friend’s huse and back every Mnday, Wednesday, and Friday.”
The gd news is, there are slutins t all these. We can begin with exercises as simple as remembering t sit straighter r drink enugh water. Specific wrkut plans can turn a general desire t exercise int a firm cmmitment. 39
We may never again have the energy f a tw-year-ld, but getting back even a little f ur early-life energy can make ur later lives a whle lt healthier.
A.Being in cllege is certainly part f the prblem.
B.This is especially s when it cmes t staying fit.
C.Nt having a clearly defined exercise plan can hurt.
D.We ften wish t g back t ur tw-year-ld selves.
E.Fr instance, yu can schedule a weekly gym visit with friends.
F.Still, there’s a real discnnect between what we knw and what we d.
G.The mst puzzling part f ur inactive nature is that we dn’t start ut that way.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,共32分)
第一节 阅读表达(共4小题,第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。
The Weight f White Lies
A man taking his mther t a surprise party tells her they’re ging t the mall. A wman fibs that the stre was ut f her verweight byfriend’s favrite junk fd. A tutr assures his student that her sptty resumé lks fine.
Even benevlent frms f deceptin cme in shades f acceptability, and peple wh learn that they have been misled dn’t always see it the way deceivers d. A lie that’s meant t inflate smene’s cnfidence r discurage a bad habit, fr example, ften invlves making a judgment abut what’s best fr that persn. That presumptin can backfire.
In recent experiments, participants playing an ecnmic game n a cmputer received a tip that led them t ne f tw pssible payffs. Sme learned that the sender f the tip had lied t them t secure them a particular ptin. If the best ptin had been debatable rather than bvius—such as receiving $10 right away rather than $30 after three mnths—participants judged that persn as less mral fr lying and were less satisfied with the utcme, n average, even if it was the ne they had previusly said they preferred. “Peple seem t feel they have a right t the truth, and that by taking that away, yu diminish their ability t act freely,” says study c-authr Matthew Lupli, a Ph.D.candidate at the University f Califrnia, San Dieg.
Making up falsehds isn’t the nly way t kindly deceive, thugh: Yu might als simply leave ut unpleasant facts. Recent studies by University f Chicag researcher Emma Levine and clleagues examined bth types f lie in hypthetical patient-dctr talks and ther cntexts.
Peple in the rle f deceiver tended t view the missin f ptentially harmful details (such as a pr prgnsis) as cmparable t r mre acceptable than ffering a cmfrting fictin (that a patient’s utlk was favrable). But thse in the rle f the deceived ften cnsidered false-but-supprtive statements mre tlerable than lies f missin. Fr deceivers, actively cmmitting a lie feels mre intentinal and might prvke mre guilt than missin, Levine says. But the targets f deceptin “aren’t likely t be sensitive t these differences because they just experience the cnsequences.”
In general, hnesty is prbably still the best plicy. A lie that prvides sme emtinal benefits and has little dwnside culd be the clsest secnd.
40.What is the presumptin peple make when telling a white lie (a lie that’s meant t be gd)?
41.What are the ways t kindly deceive thers?
42.Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
Thse in the rle f the deceived ften cnsidered lies f missin mre tlerable than false-but-supprtive statements.
43.D yu prefer t be hnest r tell a white lie when infrming yur friend f smething unpleasant? Why? (In abut 40 wrds)

41.考查细节理解。根据第四段“Making up falsehds isn’t the nly way t kindly deceive, thugh: Yu might als simply leave ut unpleasant facts.(不过,编造谎言并不是善意欺骗的唯一方式:你也可以简单地忽略不愉快的事实)”可知,善意欺骗别人的方法有编造谎言,忽略令人不快的事实。故答案为Making up falsehds and leaving ut unpleasant facts.

Accrding t the passage, thse in the rle f the deceived ften cnsidered false-but-supprtive statements mre tlerable than lies f missin. (The underlined part is false because it is cntrary t the statement in the text.)
I prefer t be hnest. As is knwn t all, hnesty is the best plicy when cmmunicating with friends, which cntributes t the maintenance f cherished friendship. While it may be uncmfrtable, hnesty builds trust and prevents further misunderstandings r cnflicts. On cntrast, white lies can damage trust and lead t mre significant prblems in the lng run.
