My biggest regret f 2023 was the relatinship t my smartphne. I spent the equal f January, February and March lking at that tiny screen. While sme f that time was necessary fr wrk, r staying cnnected with family, I became glued t it. This habit started t make me feel uneasy.
S, in December, I made a big change. I swapped my expensive iPhne fr a basic flip phne (翻盖手机), which nly cst $108. Hwever, I was determined t reduce my screen time and take back cntrl f my life.
Making the switch was neither easy nr fast. I had t adjust t its limited functins and learn t live withut the cnvenience f having everything at my fingertips. There were mments when I felt frustrated, like when I culdn’t use a smartphne app t charge my electric car r navigate withut Ggle Maps. Despite these challenges, I survived, and even prgressed during the mnth.
It was a relief t discnnect my brain frm the internet regularly and fr hurs at a time. I read fur bks. I even did a magic jigsaw puzzle. After tw weeks, I nticed I’d lst my thumb twitch — physical desire t check my phne in the mrning, at red lights, waiting fr an elevatr r at any ther mment when my mind had a brief pprtunity t wander.
“Our health is struggling against many f these services and cmpanies that are cmpeting fr ur time and ur energy and ur attentin,” said Matthew Buman, a prfessr f mvement sciences at Arizna State University. I tld him abut my wn strategy — the flip phne. Teens have a reputatin fr making sme nt-s-smart decisins and being easily distracted. Researchers have blamed it n the immaturity f the prefrntal crtex(前额叶皮质). But scientists nw find the answer may be the attractin f rewards. Rewards, even small nes, affect teens mre than adults. And teens tend t be distracted by things they nce fund rewarding, even after the actual payff is lng gne.
Psychlgist Zachary Rper and his team wrked with tw grups f vlunteers: 13-t 16-year lds and 20-t 35-year-ld adults. During a training stage, a cmputer displayed six circles, each a different clr. The players had t find the red r green circle and wuld be prvided with a 10-cent r 2-cent reward. By the end f this training, vlunteers had realized the value f each clr but they didn’t knw it. Then came the testing time. Again, grups f six symbls, ne diamnd and five circles, appeared n a cmputer screen. The researchers measured hw lng it tk peple t find the diamnd and recrded their answers.
When n red r green circles appeared, bth adults and teens respnded quickly. But when a red r green circle shwed up, bth grups tk a bit lnger initially. Adults, thugh, quickly stpped paying attentin t the red r green circles. Teens tk lnger t respnd whenever a red r green circle appeared. Clearly, the red and green circles were distracting teens even thugh they brught n reward.
“The study demnstrates that the attentin f adlescents is especially drawn t rewarding infrmatin,” says Zachary Rper. “These data may help explain why teens engage in risky behavirs.”
Sme behavirs, such as texting r using scial media, start the brain’s reward system. Once the teenage brain has linked a behavir t that reward, it cntinues t seek it again and again. That’s why teens are likely t use scial media when they shuld be studying. Or why they respnd t texts while driving. S researchers suggest physically remving distractins whenever pssible.

29. What des the underlined wrd “it” refer t in paragraph 2?
A. The red r green circle.B. The end f the training.
C. The value f each clr.D. The awareness f the clr value.
30. What can we learn frm the study cnducted by Zachary Rper and his team?
A. Adults were nt affected by the red r green circles at all.
B. Teens were attracted by the red r green circles because f the high rewards.
C. Teens were distracted by the rewarding infrmatin even after the reward was gne.
D. Adults were drawn t the rewarding infrmatin nly after they were tested repeatedly.
31. What can be a suitable title fr the text?
A. The Brain Respnse SystemB. The Effects f Rewards
C. The Distracted Teenage BrainD. The Harm f Risky Behavirs
