Althugh Lng had been riding hrses fr many years, the hardship and uncertainty f the task pushed him t his limit and frced him t depend entirely n his wn will. The race rganizers had prvided an extensive supprt netwrk t keep an eye n the participants frm afar. Despite that, the physical pressure f riding such a lng distance made simple things like squatting (蹲) dwn at the end f the day almst impssible.
Alng the vast race curse there were unpredictable circumstances beynd Lng’s cntrl, hwever well prepared he’d been. Weather was ne f them, which culd switch frm heavy rain t burning sun unexpectedly.
Abve all else, the biggest bstacle was the state f mind. Withut a living sul in sight, Lng was desperate fr interactin, guidance, and cmfrt. This feeling f lneliness accunted fr his hpe that ne f his fellw cmpetitrs wuld catch up.

We are all aware f the damaging pllutin that’s created by driving petrl and diesel (柴油) vehicles. Many f the wrld’s cities are blcked with traffic, creating fumes cntaining gases such as nitrgen xides. The slutin fr a cleaner, greener future culd be electric vehicles. The rad t glbal traffic being ttally electric is still a lng way ff. Currently, battery life is an issue — a fully charged battery wn’t take yu as far as a full tank f petrl. There are als limited numbers f charging pints t plug an EV int. Of curse, technlgy is always imprving. Sme f the biggest tech cmpanies, like Ggle and Tesla, are spending huge amunts f mney develping electric cars. And mst f the big car manufacturers are nw making them t. Clin Herrn, a cnsultant n lw-carbn vehicle technlgy, tld the BBC: “The big leap frward will cme with slid state batteries, which will appear first in mbile phnes and laptps befre they prgress t cars.” These will charge mre quickly and give cars a bigger range. Cst is anther issue that may discurage peple switching t electric pwer. But sme cuntries ffer incentive, such as cutting prices by reducing imprt taxes, and nt charging fr rad tax and parking. Sme als prvide exclusive lanes fr electric cars t be driven n, vertaking traditinal cars which might be stuck in jams.
These kinds f measures have made Nrway the cuntry with the mst electric cars per capita (人均) at mre than thirty electric cars per 1000 inhabitants. But Clin Herrn warns that “electric mtring” desn’t mean a zer-carbn future. “It’s emissin-free mtring, but the car has t be built, the battery has t be built, and the electricity des cme frm smewhere.” Maybe it’s time t think abut making fewer jurneys r using public transprt.

As new year appraches, crwds arund the wrld may be expecting firewrks t light up the sky. But the firewrks culd finally lse their appeal with the grwing use f drnes (无人机) fr light shws. One bvius example was drne light shw in the pening ceremny f Tky Olympics.
Ollie Hwitt, a technician at SkyMagic, which used 300 drnes t create a display fr Lndn’s new year celebratin, said demand had increased substantially. She added that drnes were increasingly able t fly in greater density and fr lnger. Hwitt als said there were benefits f drnes, “They give ut n pllutants, they’re reusable, and there’s n fallut r that kind f thing. S in that sense they are a very sensible chice.”
Rbert Neff, the general manager at Mercia Harbr, als said the decisin t use a drne display at the harbr was dwn t a number f factrs, including the impact f firewrks n animals — frm wildlife t the pets f bat wners. “They’ve ften cmmented n hw much suffering is caused t their pets by the firewrks,” he said.
But nt everyne agrees. Hans Rsling, a spkespersn frm the British Firewrks Assciatin said drnes culd als pse envirnmental prblems. “Suggestins are that drnes have less f an impact n the envirnment, but we have cncerns abut electrical demand and use f lithium (锂) batteries which are knwn nt t be all that ‘green’,” he said. “The impact f firewrk use n the envirnment has been shwn t be minr and very shrt-lived and recent studies have suggested that there is likely t be mre pllutin frm a cuple f cars driving t an event than caused by firewrks at an event.”
And there are issues with drne light displays, which need t receive specific safety apprval frm certain authrities. Sme suggest the use f drnes desn’t mean shutting ff firewrks. The bangs f firewrks create a sund feeling that is hard t replace. Meanwhile, thers prefer the chance t tell stries in the sky by using a series f image.

A. They bring envirnmental prblems.
B. They cause little suffering t the pets.
C. They add clr t the new year celebratin.
D. They are ecnmical and envirnmentally-friendly.
14 Which f the fllwing did Hans Rsling agree with?
A. Firewrk displays last shrter than drne displays.
B. The pllutin frm firewrks isn’t as much as peple think.
C. Drnes have less impact n the envirnment than firewrks.
D. Peple shuld abandn the drne displays because f lithium batteries.
15 What are peple’s attitudes twards drne light displays?
A. Cntrversial.B. Favrable.C. Cautius.D. Neutral.
