Machine learning engineer Yennie Jun started nticing the prblem when she was testing ChatGPT-4 in different languages. “I saw that it was slwer, and just nt as gd when using it in Krean and Chinese which usually have gd quality training data t draw n,” she said.
Earlier this mnth Yennie decided t test GPT-4 — the latest AI mdel frm Open AI — with sme tricky maths prblems. She asked the same maths questins in 16 different languages and fund it much better at slving prblems in certain languages like English, German and Spanish. In fact, GPT-4 was able t crrectly slve the maths prblems in English mre than three times as ften cmpared t ther languages, such as Armenian r Farsi. It wasn’t able t slve any f the tugh questins in Burmese r Amharic.
“I think the current state f AI will accelerate inequality. Emerging markets just dn’t have the cmputing pwer, data sets r the AI resurces t cmpete with the western wrld’s mdels,” said Nick Adams, funding partner at Differential Ventures.
