Few humans have had the pprtunity t see Earth frm space. She and her team spent the last six mnths researching a range f tpics: Hw the human brain and bdy adapt t micrgravity, 3D-printed human heart tissue and hw space changes the immune (免疫) systems f plants. One f these investigatins is the Cmplement f Integrated Prtcls fr Human Explratin Research prgram, r CIPHER, which is intended t help researchers understand hw living in space changes human health and psychlgy.
On Earth, gravity keeps bld and ther fluids relatively lw in the bdy. But when astrnauts live in micrgravity, these fluids are pushed up twards the heart, which can cause swelling, cngestin (淤血) and even visin and hearing changes. Onbard the ISS, O’Hara says astrnauts keep tabs n these ptential health risks, perfrming regular eye exams and ultrasunds t cllect data. The hpe is t use this data nt nly fr micrgravity research, but als fr research n Earth. Fr example, researchers knw astrnauts lse abut 1% t 2% f their bne density per mnth during spaceflight. S, O’Hara and her team are analyzing bne marrw stem cells in rder t better understand bth this bne lss and nrmal aging n Earth.
