The nt-fr-prfit rganizatin Material Fcus, which cnducted the research, said the scale f the issue was huge and they wanted t encurage mre recycling.
Mre than half a billin cheaply priced electrnic gds were bught in the UK in the past year alne - 16 per secnd. Material Fcus findings shwed that f these items, 471m were thrwn away. This included 260m dispsable vapes, 26m cables, 29m LED, slar and decrative lights, 9.8m USB sticks, and 4.8m miniature fans.
Sctt Butler, executive directr at Material Fcus, described it as “fast tech“. He said, “Peple shuld think carefully abut buying sme f the mre frivlus items in the first place.” He said the items peple bught were ften “cheap and small”, and that cnsumers may nt realize they cntain valuable materials that culd be salvaged if recycled.
Small electricals can cntain precius materials including cpper, lithium and stainless steel. These cmpnents can be recycled and used in wind turbines, medical devices and electric vehicles. Material Fcus said that while peple were used t the idea f recycling larger electrical items such as fridges, lts f smaller devices were left unused in huses.
Butler said, “We want t get the message acrss that anything with a plug, battery r cable can be recycled and there’s smewhere near yu t d it.
