Meterites (陨石) can ffer clues abut what the early slar system was like. But finding them is far frm difficult. Nw, sme scientists are turning t drnes (无人机) and machine learning t help spt freshly fallen meterites much mre efficiently. “A team f six peple n a meterite-hunting expeditin can search abut 200,000 square meters per day,” says Seamus Andersn, a planetary scientist in Australia.
Arund 2016, Andersn began tying with the cncept f using drnes t take pictures f the g rund t lk fr meterites. That idea blssmed int a Ph.D. prject. In 2023, he and his clleagues reprted their first successful recvery f a meterite sptted with a drne. They’ve since fund fur mre meterites at a different site. Drne-based searches are much faster than the standard search way. “Yu’re ging frm abut 300 days f human effrt dwn t abut a dzen r s,” he says.
Andersn and his wrkmates have used drnes t search fr meterites in remte parts f Western Australia and Suth Australia. The team is tipped ff abut a fall site by netwrks f grund-based cameras that track meterids flashing thrugh the Earth’s atmsphere. The researchers have t d a series f enjyable but difficult wrk befre the hunt. They pack a fur-wheel drive vehicle with drne and cmputer equipment, battery charging statins, generatrs, fuel, fd, camping equipment, tables, chairs and much mre. The drive t the fall site can take mre than a day, ften n rugh r nnexistent rads. Andersn says, “Yu hpe yu dn’t pp a tire.”
After arriving, the team flies its primary drne at an altitude f abut 20 meters. Its camera takes an image f the grund nce every secnd, and the scientists dwnlad the data every 40 minutes r s when the drne lands t receive fresh batteries. A typical day f flying can net ver 10,000 images, which are then divided digitally int 100 millin r s smaller sectins. Thse “tiles”, each 2 meters n a side, are fed int a machine learning algrithm (算法) that has been trained t recgnize meterites based n images f real land rcks which are spray-painted black.
    28. Why d the scientists study meterites?

Researchers set up an experiment in which 5-year-lds were tested with their fellws under different circumstances f transparency (透明) and different audiences. They set up a sticker machine that in sme settings was transparent, and ther settings in which nly the giver f stickers knew hw many stickers he culd give. They had children give ut stickers in bth settings. The results were striking: children were cnsistently generus nly when the receiver and audience f the stickers were fully aware f the dnatin ptins. Children were ntably ungenerus when the receiver f stickers culdn’t see the ptins.
The researchers said, “Children nly shwed cnsistently pr-scial behavir in ur study in the cnditin when they culd see the receiver and their allcatins (分配物) were fully visible; in all ther cnditins, children were statistically ungenerus, giving the receiver the smaller amunt f stickers.”
They made the cnclusins that at a very early age, children are learning hw t psitin themselves scially. Well befre they apprehend the scilgy f their netwrks and what scial reputatin really means, they think strategically abut giving as a functin f hw they can gain a reputatin with a peer as a generus citizen r pr-scial agent when the receiver bserves them.
Children change their behavir in respnse t having an audience. Help children give t thers in full view, delivering meals t families, and in private, drpping ff treats r surprises fr thse wh need supprt withut signing their names. Als, children shuld be reminded that thank-yu ntes are lvely but unnecessary t receive. When we give gifts r lend help t thers, try t help children remember why—t prvide smething fr anther. It really desn’t have t be recgnized. When a thank-yu card desn’t cme, it desn’t make a gift any less valuable r meaningful fr thse wh were lucky enugh t receive.
    32. What did the researchers discver?
A The givers’ behavir inspired the receivers t help in return.
    B. The children gave ut an equal number f stickers in bth settings.
    C. The presence f an audience affected children’s decisins t give.
    D. Dnating helped children t becme mre generus in the future.
    33. Which is pr-scial behavir accrding t the researchers?
    A. Observing the givers.B. Dnating mre stickers.
    C. Gaining a reputatin.D. Receiving mre allcatins.
    34. What des the underlined wrd “apprehend” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A. Shw gratitude fr.B. Make predictins f.
    C. Have belief in.D. Gain insight int.
