Ōmura is a micrbilgist by training. He studied Streptmyces bacteria t find cmpunds (化合物) that wrk against harmful micrbes (微生物). Campbell, wrking in the US, tk bacteria fund by Ōmura and tk ut avermectin, which is effective against parasites in farm animals. An imprved type f avermectin was later prduced fr humans, which greatly reduced the cases f river blindness and lymphatic filariasis.
Avermectin cmes frm bacteria, but artemisinin cmes frm plants. Its discvery was the result f Prject 523, a Chinese gvernment prject t find a new malaria drug in the late 1960s.
Malaria is a msquit-brne disease caused by parasites, which attack red bld cells, causing fever, and smetimes, brain damage and death. Tu and her team made 380 herbal extracts frm 2,000 recipes frm traditinal Chinese medical bks. In 1971, after mre than 190 failures, Tu’s team finally fund an extract that was 100 percent effective against malaria parasites. It was called qinghasu, later renamed artemisinin. In 2001, the Wrld Health Organizatin named artemisinin the first chice in the treatment f malaria.
Millins f peple are still trubled by infectins caused by parasites. But the WHO said that by 2013, malaria deaths had fallen by 47 percent cmpared with 2000. Diners in Japan may sn be able t cut their salt intake withut needing t sacrifice(牺牲)flavr. Researchers recently annunced they develped electric chpsticks that increase saltiness f fds.
C-develped by Meiji University prfessr Hmei Miyashita and drink prducer Kirin Hldings Cmpany, Limited, the chpsticks imprve tastes using electrical stimulatin and a mini-cmputer attached t a wrist.“The device uses a weak electrical current t send sdium ins (钠离子) frm fd, thrugh the chpsticks, t the muth where they create a sense f saltiness,” said Miyashita.“As a result, the salty taste increases by 1.5 times.”
