While wrking at the Vancuver Aquarium, Tucker met a rescued dlphin whse fins were partially cut ff due t fishing equipment entanglement (缠绕). This heartbreaking experience made Tucker immediately search fr a way t take actin against the plastic pllutin that caused these injuries.
“I saw immediately that this was because f us,” she says. “I knew I had t d smething. Then, I fund Mind Yur Plastic.”

Thrugh direct partnerships with lcal educatrs, municipalities and businesses, these prgrams cnnect Canadians with direct ways t take actin. The CEAP prgram, fr example, helps teachers educate yuth abut the circular ecnmy, lead lcal cleanups, and track cllected waste.
The blame game is anther area in need f transitin, accrding t Tucker, wh says that big cmpanies, nt custmers, shuld carry the respnsibility t slve Canada’s plastic pllutin prblem.
“It’s felt fr a lng time like the respnsibility is placed n the custmers,” says Tucker. “That needs t stp.”
Tucker says this perspective (观点) can be shifted by individuals creating public pressures—fr example, pushing fr plicy—and using their dllars t supprt mre sustainable, circular alternatives until these plicy changes happen.
“This makes plicy a valuable tl. And big business may say there’s n interest, but we knw there is,” she says. “Let’s use ur dllars t prve that, and challenge plicymakers t help make change happen.”
    4. What first inspired Natasha Tucker’s passin fr fighting plastic pllutin?

An experimental treatment rejuvenates (使...恢复活力) the immune (免疫的) systems f lder mice, imprving their ability t fight infectins. If it wrks in humans, the treatment culd reverse (逆转) age-related decreases in immunity that leave lder adults susceptible t disease.
These decreases may be due t changes in ur bld stem cells which can develp int any type f bld cell—including key parts that make up the immune system. As we age, a larger prprtin (比例) f these stem cells tend t prduce sme immune cells ver thers, says Jasn Rss at Stanfrd University in Califrnia. This imbalance damages the immune system’s defenses.
Rss and his clleagues have develped a treatment using antibdies (抗体), which are prteins that recgnize and attack certain cells t target these abnrmal stem cells. They tested the treatment in six mice between 18 and 24 mnths ld, which is rughly equal t an age f 56 t 70 years in humans.
A week after receiving an antibdy injectin, the mice had abut 38 percent fewer f these abnrmal stem cells than six mice f the same age that didn’t receive the treatment. “Yu can think f it as kind f turning back the clck,” says Rss. “We’re making the prprtin f these immune cells mre similar t thse f a yunger adult muse.”
T test if the changes resulted in a strnger immune system, the researchers vaccinated (打疫苗) 17 lder mice against a muse virus. Nine f these mice had received the antibdy treatment eight weeks earlier. The researchers then infected (感染) the mice with the virus. Tw weeks later, they measured the number f infected cells in the animals and fund that nearly half f the treated mice had cleared the infectin, cmpared with nly ne f the eight untreated mice.
The findings indicate that the antibdy treatment rejuvenates the muse immune system. “Since humans, like mice, als see abnrmal bld stem cells increase with age, a similar antibdy treatment may rejuvenate ur immune systems,” says Rss.
    8. What des the underlined wrd “susceptible” in paragraph 1 mean?
    A. Strngly resist.B. Easily suffer frm.
    C. Cmpletely unaffected by.D. Highly immune t.
    9. What may cause age-related decreases in immunity?
    A. Changes in ur nervus system.
    B. An increase in antibdies in ur bdy.
    C. Changes in bld stem cells.
    D. A decrease in the number f immune cells.
    10. Hw did the researchers measure the effectiveness f the antibdy treatment n the mice?
    A. By analyzing changes in their lifestyle.
    B. By bserving differences in their behavir.
    C. By cnducting bld tests t measure immune cell cunts.
    D. By cunting the number f infected cells after virus cntact.
    11. What cnclusin can be drawn frm the findings f the study?
    A. The antibdy treatment has n effect n the muse immune system.
    B. The antibdy treatment increases the risk f infectins in mice.
    C. The antibdy treatment nly wrks n yung mice, nt lder nes.
    D. The antibdy treatment imprves the muse immune system.

Dgs may understand mre than they shw. Pet dgs’ brains displayed neural (神经的) signs f surprise when their wners shwed them an unexpected ty. The findings, published March 22 in Current Bilgy, suggest that dgs create mental cncepts f bjects.
“Anyne wh has ever interacted very much with a dg prbably is nt that surprised t knw that dgs understand that yur speech is referring t at least a few cmmn bjects,” says Ellen Lau, a neurscientist at the University f Maryland in Cllege Park. But sme peple may have assumed this “understanding” is a simple reactin t the sund f the wrd.
Marianna Brs, a neurscientist at Etv’s Lrand University in Budapest, recruited 27 pet dgs and their wners. The team asked the wners t bring five familiar tys and ther bjects t the lab. Researchers stuck electrdes (电极) t the dgs’ heads and gave them tw tasks: lien a mat and stay awake.
Every s ften a dg wuld hear a recrding f its wner saying things like, “Kun-Kun, lk, the ball!” The dg’s wner was n the ther side f a wall with a windw cvered by the curtains. Just after the recrding played, the curtains were pened, shwing the wner hlding a ty—the ball r a different ty, such as a rpe.
Just after seeing an unexpected bject, an electrde mnitring (监测) brain activity picked up a larger-than-nrmal signal. This signal indicates surprise, the team says, and suggests that the dg had already frmed a mental cncept and expectatin f the ball after hearing that wrd. In fact, the signal was especially strng fr a mismatch invlving wrds that the dgs reprtedly knew very well. “That suggests that it is really abut understanding and knwledge f the wrd,” Brs says.
    12. Which statement best reflects Ellen Lau’s view n dgs’ understanding f speech?
    A. Dgs understand speech primarily as a reactin t the sund f wrds.
    B. Dgs understand speech, especially when it invlves cmmn bjects.
    C. Dgs have limited understanding f speech, mainly reacting t tne.
    D. Dgs shws understanding f the deeper meaning f the speech.
    13. Hw did researchers test dgs’ reactins?
    A. By mnitring their brain activity.B. By bserving their behavirs.
    C. By playing recrdings.D. By pening the curtains.
    14. What des the signal mentined in paragraph 5 indicate?
    A. Dgs hear cmmands.B. Dgs display behavirs.
    C. Dgs shw interest.D. Dgs frm expectatins.
    15. Which might be the best title fr the text?
    A. Examining Dgs’ Hearing f WrdsB. Revealing Dgs’ Mental Cncepts
    C. Explring Dgs’ Reactins t the OrdersD. Studying Dgs’ Neural System

Every s ften, a dg wuld hear a recrding f its wner saying things like, “Kun-Kun, lk, the ball!” The dg’s wner was n the ther side f a wall with a windw cvered by the curtains.

    【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要介绍了3种方式引导家里面的小孩认识和保护地球。
    【16题详解】
根据上文“Even if yu live in a big city, yu can still experience nature firsthand.(即使你住在大城市,你仍然可以亲身体验大自然)”以及后文“It’s all that we experience with ur senses when we g utside.(这是我们外出时用感官体验到的一切)”可知,前文提到在城市中也可以亲身感受自然,后一句提到只要走出家门就可以感知自然。故中间句表达,自然不一定存在与荒野中。故C选项“自然不只是荒野”符合语境,故选C。
    【17题详解】
根据后文“Hwever, yu can explain that climate is simply the pattern f weather in a certain place ver time. Have them keep a weather jurnal f the lcal weather day t day t get a sense f the climate in their area. Fr the lder kids, discuss different weather measurement tls that are used by meterlgists (气象学家), such as barmeters and hygrmeters.(然而,你可以解释说,气候只是某一地区一段时间内的天气模式。让他们每天记录当地天气的天气日志,以了解他们所在地区的气候。对于年龄较大的孩子,讨论气象学家使用的不同天气测量工具,如气压计和湿度计)”可知,下句“hwever”表明填空句与之构成转折关系。刚好D项中的 tugh和下句的“simply”构成转折。同时本段后面提到了“lder kids”与D项中的“yunger kids"呼应。故D选项“气候变化对小孩子来说是一个很难的话题”符合语境,故选D。
    【18题详解】
根据本段内容“Kids can help take care f plants, like vegetables in a garden r flwering plants in pts. Grwing and nurturing plants helps children understand that living things have needs and that peple have a rle t play in helping living things meet thse needs. Make cnnectins between climate change and the needs f plants; fr example, hw htter temperatures may mean that a plant needs mre water.(孩子们可以帮忙照顾植物,比如花园里的蔬菜或花盆里的开花植物。种植和培育植物可以帮助孩子们理解生物有需求,人们在帮助生物满足这些需求方面扮演着重要的角色。在气候变化和植物需求之间建立联系;例如,温度越高意味着植物需要更多的水)”可知,本段提到通过孩子亲自去种植植物而加强他们对于这片土地的认识。A选项dirt指泥土。就是让孩子们进入泥土中,亲自种植的意思。故A选项“进入泥土”符合语境,故选A。
    【19题详解】
根据上文“If they need ideas fr hw t bring nature int their utdr games, try starting with smething they are already interested in.(如果他们需要关于如何将自然带入户外游戏的想法,试着从他们已经感兴趣的东西开始)”可知,上句提到把“nature”带进孩子们的户外活动, G选项中用自然界找到的东西来搭建孩子们的迷你游乐园。刚好与之呼应。故G选项“这可能意味着用天然材料建造一个小型游乐园”符合语境,故选G。
    【20题详解】
根据上文“It desn’t take much t strengthen a lifelng relatinship between children and the natural wrld, but it helps t start early and be cnsistent.(加强儿童与自然世界之间的终身关系并不需要太多的努力,但它有助于及早开始并保持一致)”可知,上句提到尽早培养孩子们和自然的关系,并且要连贯。下句“With a little guidance frm parents and educatrs, children wh care abut the envirnment will grw int adults wh care abut the envirnment.(在父母和教育工作者的一点点引导下,关心环境的孩子将成长为关心环境的成年人)”提到这样的话孩子们就会成长为关心环境的成年人。E选项中的 naturally grwn,与代词“their”刚好前后句相呼应。故E选项“他们保护地球的愿望自然会增长”符合语境,故选E。
