Susan wrked lng hurs at her ffice but als braved the wind and snw, walking miles t make huse calls. Her wrk was mre than as a physician. What if “lking yur age” refers nt t yur face, but t yur chest? Osaka Metrplitan University scientists have develped an advanced artificial intelligence (AI) mdel that uses chest radigraphs (光片) t assess a persn’s bilgical age. Mre imprtantly, when it is different frm the chrnlgical age (实足年龄), it can signal a link with chrnic (慢性的) diseases. These findings mark a breakthrugh in medical imaging, paving the way fr imprved early disease detectin and interventin.
The research team, led by graduate student Yasuhit Mitsuyama and Dr. Daiju Ueda frm the Department f Diagnstic and Interventinal Radilgy at the Graduate Schl f Medicine, Osaka Metrplitan University, first cnstructed a deep learning-based AI mdel t estimate age frm chest radigraphs f healthy individuals. They then applied the mdel t radigraphs f patients with knwn diseases t analyze the relatinship between AI-estimated age and each disease. Given that AI trained n a single dataset tends t ver fit, the researchers cllected data frm multiple institutins.
Fr the develpment, training, internal and external testing f the AI mdel fr age estimatin, a ttal f 67,099 chest radigraphs were btained between 2008 and 2021 frm 36,051 healthy individuals wh underwent health check-ups at three facilities.
T cnfirm the usefulness f AI-estimated age using chest radigraphs as a bimarker, an additinal 34,197 chest radigraphs were cllected frm 34,197 patients with knwn diseases frm tw ther institutins. The results shwed that the difference between AI-estimated age and the patient’s chrnlgical age was psitively crrelated with a variety f chrnic diseases. In ther wrds, the higher the AI-estimated age cmpared t the chrnlgical age, the mre likely individuals were t have these diseases.
“Chrnlgical age is ne f the mst critical factrs in medicine,” stated Mr. Mitsuyama. “Our results suggest that chest radigraphy-based apparent age may accurately reflect health cnditins beynd chrnlgical age. We aim t further develp this research and apply it t estimate the severity f chrnic diseases, t predict life expectancy and t frecast pssible surgical cmplicatins.”
    46. What is the AI mdel used t d?
    A. Tell a patient’s chrnlgical age.
    B. Estimate an individual’s bilgical age.
    C. Develp advanced chest radigraphs.
    D. Analyze individuals’ wrkut habits.
    47. What did the research team d fr their research?
    A. They fllwed patients fr ver tw decades.
    B. They btained data frm the same institutin.
    C. They cllected a large number f chest radigraphs.
    D. They had face-t-face talks with healthy individuals.
    48. Hw did the research team knw if individuals might be sick?
    A. By making cmparisns. “
    B. By interviewing their dctrs.
    C. By bserving them in their lab.
    D. By analyzing causes and effects.
    49. What d the researchers aim t d with their research findings in the future?
    A. Develp a new AI mdel fr facial recgnitin.
    B. Apply the research t estimate the severity f acute diseases.
C Predict the weather using AI technlgy.
    D. Apply the research t estimate the severity f chrnic diseases and predict life expectancy.
    50. Which f the fllwing statement des Mr. Mitsuyama agree with?
    A. The research is t cmplex t be carried ut widely.
    B. The AI mdel is expected t have a prmising future.
C Chrnlgical age matters mre than Al-estimated age.
    D. The research findings have been well received in medicine.

Is frgiveness against ur human nature? T answer ur questin, we need t ask a further questin: What is the essence f ur humanity? Fr the sake f simplicity, peple cnsider tw distinctly different views f humanity. The first view invlves dminance and pwer. In an early paper n the psychlgy f frgiveness, Drll (1984) made the interesting claim that humans’ essential nature is mre aggressive than frgiving allws. Thse wh frgive are against their basic nature, much t their harm. In his pinin, frgivers are cmprmising their well-being as they ffer mercy t thers, wh might then take advantage f them.
The secnd view invlves the theme f cperatin, mutual respect, and even lve as the basis f wh we are as humans. Researchers find that t fully grw as human beings, we need bth t receive lve frm and ffer lve t thers. Withut lve, ur cnnectins with a wide range f individuals in ur lives can fall apart. Even cmmn sense strngly suggests that the will t pwer ver thers des nt make fr harmnius interactins. Fr example, hw well has slavery wrked as a mde f scial harmny?
Frm this secnd viewpint f wh we are as humans, frgiveness plays a key rle in the bilgical and psychlgical integrity f bth individuals and cmmunities because ne f the utcmes f frgiveness, shwn thrugh scientific studies, is the decreasing f hatred and the restratin f harmny. Frgiveness can break the cycle f anger. At least t the extent the peple frm whm yu are estranged accept yur lve and frgiveness and are prepared t make the required adjustments. Frgiveness can heal relatinships and recnnect peple.
As an imprtant nte, when we take a Classical philsphical perspective, that f Aristtle, we see the distinctin between ptentiality and actuality. We are nt necessarily brn with the capacity t frgive, but instead with the ptential t learn abut it and t grw in ur ability t frgive. The actuality f frgiving, its actual apprpriatin in cnflict situatins, develps with practice.
    51. What is Drll’s idea abut frgiveness?
    A. Peple shuld ffer mercy t thers.
    B. Aggressive peple shuld learn t frgive.
    C. Frgiveness depends n the nature f humanity.
    D. Peple wh frgive can have their wn welfare affected.
    52. What des the example in Paragraph 2 illustrate?
    A. T frgive is t lve.B. T dminate is t harm.
    C. T fight is t grw.D. T give is t receive.
    53. What des the underlined wrd “estranged” mean in the passage?
    A. Cnnected and harmnius.B. Separated and discnnected.
    C. Frgiving and lving.D. Aggressive and hstile.
    54. What is the writer’s attitude tward frgiveness?
    A. Favrable.B. Reserved.C. Objective.D. Skeptical.
    55. What is message f the last paragraph?
    A. Frgiveness is in ur nature.
    B. Frgiveness grws with time.
    C. It takes practice t frgive.
    D. Actuality is based n ptentiality.

Furthermre, she carefully tended t her garden, cmbating weeds and harvesting crps, with green beans prving particularly challenging.
Eventually, with assistance frm her yunger brthers and sisters, Lauren’s half-acre garden prduced 15 varieties f vegetables. In its first year, the garden generated 40 punds f prduce, benefiting fd banks, nursing hmes, and sup kitchens.
