Jã went thrugh 24 surgeries, but nthing culd help his hands, frcing him t stp playing the pian, seemingly fr gd.

That might have been his life, were it nt fr an engineer wh saw the pianist playing live and decided t wrk ut smething t help him. After a cncert, he apprached Jã with the first pair f special binic glves. Yet, they didn’t wrk. When the engineer first shwed Jã the glves, he jked that they were fr bxing, nt t play the pian.
But neither f them gave up, and after testing ut several mdels, the perfect match was created. The glves prvide the necessary supprt fr each finger and can even “tune” t what he plays.

“Hell” is a relatively new greeting. It first appeared smetime in the mid-1800s, but many peple wuld nt have dreamed f using it. “Hell” was cnsidered a very implite way t greet smene. Instead, peple used frmal expressins like “Hw d yu d?”
Back then, there were several wrds that sunded like “hell,” but they were used t get smene’s attentin r t express surprise. Fr example, if yu caught yur little brther stealing yur snack, yu might have said, “Halla there! Stp eating my cheese!” If yu fund a fly in yur sup, yu might have shuted, “Hull! Hw did that get in there?”
Everything started t change in 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephne. The first telephnes didn’t have numbers yu culd dial, nr did they have bells r ringers. Instead, yur telephne sent signals alng telephne lines t a central ffice where an peratr wuld answer by saying smething like “Are yu there, sir?” r “What is wanted?” The peratr wuld then cnnect yur phne t the phne f the persn yu wanted t reach. There was just ne small prblem: Since telephnes didn’t ring, hw wuld the persn yu were calling knw that yu were “n the line”? The answer is yu wuld yell (大喊) int yur phne and hpe smene n the ther end heard yu. But what wuld yu yell? And what wuld the persn yu were calling say when they were ging t answer? Bell suggested “Ahy! Ahy!” but it didn’t catch n. Then the famus inventr Thmas Edisn suggested the wrd hell. That caught n right away.
“Hell” became s ppular that by 1878 telephne peratrs were required t use it. In fact, peratrs received the nickname (绰号) “Hell Girls.” Sn, “hell” became nt just the standard way t answer the phne, but an accepted way t greet peple in persn.
8. Why was “hell” seldm used when it first appeared?
A. It was t infrmal.
B. It was hard t prnunce.
C. It was cnsidered t be rude.
D. There were ther wrds like “hell”.
9. “Hull” was used t shw smething _____.
A. interestingB. exciting
C. bringD. unexpected
10. Paragraph 3 is mainly abut _____.
A. hw “hell” was used t answer the telephne
B. the friendship between Bell and Edisn
C. the inventin f the telephne
D. hw the telephne imprved
11. We can infer frm the text that _____.
A. “hell” gt ppular as sn as the telephne was invented
B. the telephne has changed the way peple speak
C. peple liked simple expressins like “hell”
D. Bell advised girls t use “hell”

If there is n difference in general intelligence between bys and girls, what can explain girls’ pr perfrmance in science and mathematics?
It seems t be that their treatment at schl is a direct cause. Mathematics and science are seen as subjects mainly fr bys, and therefre, as girls becme teenagers, they are less likely t take them. Interestingly, bth bys and girls ften regard the subjects fr bys as mre difficult. Yet it has been suggested that girls d nt take mathematics curses, nt because they are difficult, but fr scial reasns. Girls d nt want t be in pen cmpetitin with bys because they are afraid t appear less feminine and attractive.
Hwever, if we examine the perfrmance f bys and girls wh have taken mathematics curses, there are still mre high-achieving bys than there are girls. This difference appears t be wrld-wide. Bilgical explanatins have been ffered fr this, but there are ther explanatins t.
Perhaps the difference which cmes ut during the teenage years has its rts in much earlier experiences. Frm their first days in kindergarten, bys are encuraged t wrk n their wn and t cmplete tasks. Facts shw that utstanding mathematicians and scientists have nt had teachers wh supplied answers.
Besides, there can be little dubt that teachers f mathematics and science expect their by students t d better at these subjects than their girl students. They even appear t encurage the difference between bys and girls. They spend mre time with the by students, giving them mre time t answer questins and wrking harder t get crrect answers frm them. They are mre likely t call n bys fr answers and t allw them t take the lead in classrm discussin. They als praise bys mre frequently. All f this seems t encurage bys t wrk harder in science and mathematics and t give them cnfidence that they are able t succeed.
Such a way f teaching is nt likely t encurage girls t take many mathematics and science curses, nr is it likely t supprt girls wh d. When it cmes t these subjects, it seems certain that schl widens the difference between bys and girls.
12. Girls are likely t think that _________.
A. science curses are fr bth bys and girlsB. science curses make them mre ppular
C. science curses make them successfulD. science curses are difficult fr them
13. What des the underlined wrd “feminine” in para.2 prbably mean?

C. They shwed mathematical abilities in their teenage years.
D. Their success resulted frm their strng interest in mathematics.
15. The authr wuld prbably agree that _________.
A. bys and girls learn in the same way
