Twenty-tw years ag, I wn a Nbel Prize, tgether with Tim and Leland Hartwell, fr ur wrk n hw cells cntrl their divisin. The prize changed ur lives. Suddenly yu becme a public figure being asked t d all srts f things: t give lectures, quite ften n tpics yu knw little abut; t sit n cmmittees and reviews yu are nt always well qualified t be n; t visit cuntries yu have barely heard f. It is like having a whle new extra jb, with upwards f 500 requests a year.
A recent study suggests that in general the extra cmmitments that Nbel winners take n result in fewer papers after their awards. There may be sme truth t this given the extra demands n ne’s time, but f curse prestigius(声誉卓越的) awards als allw new prjects and research t be undertaken.
What effects did the Nbel Prize have n my subsequent career and wrk? It has certainly helped me t get scientific leadership psitins. Within a year f getting the prize I was ffered and accepted the presidency(院长)f Rckefeller University in New Yrk. Having the prize als helps t get things dne. Fr example, I have been invlved in the merging f tw separate cancer research charities t frm Cancer Research UK. And it has helped me supprt causes I care deeply abut. I became an ambassadr fr Ukraine educatin and science t help raise mney fr schls in that pr cuntry. Mrever, having a Nbel des help attract high-quality research clleagues. I have just started three excellent new PhD students. It is an hnr fr me t be able t pursue curisity-driven research at this late stage f my career.
Hwever, ne thing I am glad t say that the Nbel Prize did nt influence was peer(同辈)review frm my fellw scientists, assessing the suitability f my wn research fr publicatin, and my grant applicatins fr funding. My rejectin(拒绝) rates have remained basically the same befre and after the prize. And that, f curse, is exactly hw it shuld be.

A. The spirit f science lies in seeking facts and truth.
B. Winning a Nbel Prize has an impact n peer review.
C. Extra cmmitments make Nbel winners less prductive.
D. The apprval a Nbel winner receives is equal t rejectin.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is shwing prmise in earthquake predictin, challenging the lng-
held belief that it is impssible. Researchers at the University f Texas, Austin, have develped an AI algrithm that crrectly predicted 70% f earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and prvided accurate strength calculatins(估算) fr the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their methd succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning apprach. The AI was prvided with a set f statistical features based n the team’s knwledge f earthquake physics, and then instructed t train itself using a five-year database f earthquake recrdings. Once trained, the AI prvided its predictin by listening fr signs f incming earthquakes within the backgrund rumblings(隆隆声)in the Earth. This wrk is clearly a milestne in research fr AI-driven earthquake predictin. “Yu dn’t see earthquakes cming,” explains Alexandrs Savvaidis, a senir research scientist wh leads the Texas Seismlgical Netwrk Prgram(TexNet). “It’s a matter f millisecnds, and the nly thing yu can cntrl is hw prepared yu are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and culd help reduce ecnmic and human lsses and has the ptential t greatly imprve earthquake preparatin wrldwide.”
While it is unknwn whether the same way will wrk at ther lcatins, the researchers are cnfident that their AI algrithm culd prduce mre right predictins if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking netwrks. The next step is t test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet has 300 earthquake statins and ver six years wrth f cntinuus recrds, making it an ideal lcatin fr these purpses. Eventually, the researchers hpe t cmbine the system with physics based mdels. This strategy culd prve especially imprtant where data is pr r lacking. “That may be a lng way ff, but many advances such as this ne, taken tgether, are what mves science frward,” cncludes Sctt Tinker, the bureau’s directr.
8.Hw des the AI frecast earthquakes?
A. By identifying data frm the satellites.
B. By analyzing backgrund sunds in the Earth.
C. By mdeling data based n earthquake recrdings.
D. By mnitring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
9.What des Alexandrs Savvaidis intend t shw in paragraph 2?

B. Applying the AI t ther fields.
C. Building mre earthquake statins in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database t train the calculatin accuracy.
11.Which wrds can best describe the earthquake-predicting technlgy?

C. Ptential and ecnmical.D. Pineering and prmising.
When wind blws thrugh a bigleaf maple(大叶枫), paper-thin, wing-like seeds called samaras gently spin twards the grund. The fruit’s tissue allws the wind t guide it further away frm the tree. Inspired by the seeds, researchers designed a tiny, winged micrchip(微芯片), n larger than agrain f sand, that is pwerful enugh t mnitr envirnmental pllutin and airbrne disease.
Called the micrflier, the micrchip has n mtr t push it frward in the air but instead was designed t catch the wind. T perfect the micrchip’s flying ability and shape, scientists tk inspiratin frm the frms f varius airbrne seeds. The research team imprved varius designs until the micrfliers flew slwly and mre steadily than nature’s samara seeds. The slwer falling rate allws the micrchip t keep flying fr lnger, which gives it mre time t cllect data and mnitr air pllutants and airbrne diseases.
T perfect the micrflier’s flight, researchers tk inspiratin frm children’s pp-up bks t create the three-dimensinal wings. Usually, electrnic micrchips are flat, tw-dimensinal bjects, but smething flat wn’t take flight. T make the 3-D shape, Jhn A. Rgers and his team built a stretched rubber base that the micrchip rests n. The wings pp int flight mde when the rubber base is relaxed.
The chip gathers data with sensrs acrss its surface that can sense and mnitr pH levels, test fr heavy metals r chemicals, and track air pllutin. An antenna (天线) n the micrflier then sends all the cllected data t a cmputer r phne. Rgers and his team are planning t test ut the electrnic chips sn by drpping thusands f the chips in a field. The micrfliers will change clr depending n the number f heavy metals present in the field where they land. A drne(无人机) will then fly ver the area and take phts f the micrflier’s clrs, allwing researchers t map ut the pllutants.
Rgers and his team als designed the micrchips t break dwn ver time t prevent envirnmental pllutin.
12.What is the winged micrchip designed t d?
A. A.Guide seeds frm the tree.

B. Hw the micrflier has imprved.
C. What the micrchip des fr humans.
D. Why the micrflier flies mre stably.
14.What d the researchers d with the micrflier in the future?
A. Drp chips in the field.
B. Mnitr the sil clr.
C. Map ut air pllutants.
D. Handle sil pllutin.
15.Which f the fllwing wuld be a suitable title fr the text?
A. Winged micrchips fr mnitring envirnment
B. Micrflier: A flying device f spreading seeds
C. Drne: A phtgrapher f micrflier’s clrs
D. Electrnic chips fr finding airbrne diseases
