Paul Getty Museum — the nly field trip she tk in high schl — that she fund her inspiratin frm the 18th-century French paintings, featuring impressive, grand dresses.
“We’ve never made a dress, much less ut f duct tape,” Karla said. “We didn’t knw hw much duct tape we needed. We were just ding it by trial and errr.” In the end, the cllege-bund teen and her mm spent at least 120 hurs, ver many days, wrking n the dress, and used l4 rlls f tape.
“Tape is s tugh and yu can’t mve it easily,” Karla said. “It was really challenging t make it all cme tgether.” But the fashin-frward teenager vercame that challenge. Of mre than 200 entries t the cntest, Karla’s wrk was selected amng the tp five, judged fr clr, quality, riginality, and the use f the brand tape.
While it’s Karla’s name fficially in the cntest, this whle prcess was mre f a cllective effrt by her family. “It means a lt t me. The $ 10,000 prize wuld g a lng way as I plan t attend a Califrnia State University schl in August. In a new study, researchers fund a link between utdr educatin and science grades. The findings indicate utdr educatin culd be a prmising tl t help clse gender (性别) gap s in science. “The utdrs is a space where teachers can find tangible ways t make science cme alive,” says lead authr Kathryn Stevensn, assistant prfessr f parks, recreatin, and turism management at Nrth Carlina State University.
“The natural envirnment is als a place that everybdy has in cmmn. In a way, it’s als a great cntext fr emplying teaching practices like hands-n, inquiry-based learning r grup wrk. These practices can be gd fr all students, but they may be particularly gd fr reaching students wh aren’t as well-served in classrm settings.” Stevensn says.
The researchers studied the impact f an utdr science educatin prgram called Muddy Sneakers n fifth graders’ science grades and knwledge f, and attitude abut, science.
Fifth graders frm western Nrth Carlina attended between 6 and 10 days f Muddy Sneakers. They had science lessns in nearby natural areas, including state parks and schl grunds. Outdr lessns fllwed the standard curse f study fr science thrugh hands-n activities, hikes, nature explratin, and reflectins.
Researchers cmpared the perfrmance f 237 students wh learned abut science in the classrm t 403 students wh participated in the utdr prgram. When researchers evaluated (评估) students’ science grades by gender, they saw that girls wh participated in the utdr science prgram maintained their science grades n average, while girls’ average grades in the traditinal science classes drpped. They als saw that participatin in the utdr prgram helped girls learn mre abut hw science wrks n average, but traditinal classrms did nt.
Bys in the utdr and traditinal class settings had fairly stable science grades n average and saw similar gains in knwledge f hw science wrks. “Outdr educatin seems t be ne f thse cntexts that helps everyne learn but it may be really, really helpful fr sme students in particular,” Stevensn says.
    8. What des the underlined wrd “tangible” in paragraph I mean?
    A. Practical.B. Ineffective.

    D. T earn sme mney frm different kinds f curses.
    10. Hw d the researchers reach the findings?
    A. By listing numbers.B. By making a cmparisn.

With munting evidence that nanplastic particles (纳米塑料微粒) are in ur bdies, there is grwing cncern ver their ptential health impacts. Nw a new study finds a relatin between nanplastics in the brain and a higher risk fr Parkinsn’s disease.
Nanplastics appear when the plastic packaging breaks dwn int small pieces. These particles can enter the bld and crss the bld-brain barrier, with Eurpean researchers reprting earlier this year that in animal experiments, it can take tw hurs r less fr certain nanplastics t reach the brain after being eaten.
In humans, it’s lng been thught that envirnmental factrs play a rle in Parkinsn’s disease but specific causes are still unclear. The new study frm the Duke University Schl f Medicine details hw nanplastics cause chemical changes in the brain that can, in turn, make Parkinsn’s and related types f diseases mre likely.
That’s because the nanplastics attract a prtein (蛋白质) called alpha-synuclein, knwn t play a rle in Parkinsn’s and related disrders. In lab and animal studies, the plastic’s interactin with it leads t increases in the affected neurns in the brain. This interactin appears related t favrable cnditins in which Parkinsn’s can develp.
The study authrs nte that Parkinsn’s disease existed lng befre nanplastics appeared in the envirnment, but they think that this “nanplastics pllutin in the human brain” may prve a new pisn.
Further, the Duke team led by Dr. Andrew West ntes that Parkinsn’s disease is amng the fastest grwing nervus diseases in the wrld, even as the amazing amunt f plastic pllutin builds acrss the planet. This is expected t cntinue fr the frseeable future.
“The technlgy t mnitr nanplastics is still at the earliest pssible stages and nt ready yet t answer all the questins we have,” West said. “But hpefully effrts in this area will increase rapidly, as we see what these particles can d in ur experiments.”
    12. Where is the text mst prbably taken frm?
    A. A prduct advertisement.
    B. A science jurnal.
    C. An art magazine.
    D. A travel brchure.
    13. What is the finding f the study?
    A. Nanplastics can enter the brain thrugh bld.
B Nanplastics may prmte Parkinsn’s disease.
    C. Alpha-synuclein plays a rle in Parkinsn’s disease.
    D. It takes lnger fr plastics t break dwn in animals.
    14. What is paragraph 4 mainly abut?
    A. The cnditins leading t Parkinsn’s.
    B. The cause f alpha-synclein’s appearance.
    C. The difference between Parkinsn’s and related disrders.
    D. The principle f nanplastics’ impact n Parkinsn’s.
    15. What can be inferred frm West’s wrds in the last paragraph?
    A. Plastic pllutin will by n means be avided.
    B. Nanplastics are impssible t deal with at present.
    C. Mre effrts in the study f nanplastics will be put in.
    D. Fewer peple will suffer frm Parkinsn’s in the future.
