Scientists flew ver mre than 200 landfills acrss 18 states frm 2018 t 2022, claiming it t be the largest measurement-based survey f America’s landfills. Their results revealed that average methane emissins (排放) were much higher than thse fficially reprted, accrding t a new study published in the jurnal Science.
Methane — an invisible gas with ver 80 times mre warming pwer than CO2 in the near term — is prduced by varius surces, the biggest f which are il, gas and agriculture. Landfills tend t be a less well-knwn methane surce, but they als have a huge impact, estimated at arund 20% f glbal human-caused methane emissins. Landfills prduce methane when rganic wastes such as fds, paper and wd decmpse withut xygen, creating the perfect envirnment fr methane-prducing bacteria.
Mst landfills in the US are required t measure methane emissins fur times a year thrugh walking surveys using handheld sensrs. Hwever, thse types f measurements are really nt designed t d anything abut emissins, but rather just detect methane “htspts”, as peple tend t avid areas that are unsafe t walk thrugh, and where garbage is actively being dumped.
The results f the new study shw current reprting systems, such as the Envirnmental Prtectin Agency’s Greenhuse Gas Reprting Prgram (GHGRP), are missing large methane surces. Average methane emissin rates frm landfills were 1.4 times higher than thse being reprted t the GHGRP. The study als fund landfill methane emissins were generally much mre persistent (挥发慢的) than thse frm il and gas prductin, with 60% lasting fr multiple mnths r even years.
