Keeping a lkut fr bears was a regular duty fr Mhaupt, the lgistics (后勤) peratr fr a year-lng task knwn as the MOSAiC — the largest Arctic research jurney in histry. The prject began in late 2019. Over the next year, the ship and abut 300 scientists mved alng the ice t gather data n climate change. Fr mnths, the explratin grup perated in cnstant darkness while plar bears walked arund nearby, strms rcked the ship and the ice mved. Frm the very beginning f recrded histry, there has been a desire t create a single language that culd unite (联合) humans. In the stry f the Twer f Babel, the belief has always been that the diversity (多样性) f languages is a prblem t which we need t find a slutin. With the recent rapid imprvements in artificial intelligence, it lks as if this big dream might finally be within reach.
The slutin turns ut nt t invlve prducing a single universal language, but instead the develpment f cmputer-based translatin. It is fixed within the technlgies that have becme a necessary part f everyday life. Nw, aut-translatin fr freign-language pstings n Facebk has been arund fr a few years, and there are a number f ear-set translatrs n the market that act as real-life. The AI tls can nw translate directly frm and int any mixture f a hundred different languages.
It seems perfectly likely that sme frm f practical universal cmmunicatin will be part f everyday life in the near future. But there is a very imprtant questin we shuld be asking abut all this: what impact will it have n sciety and culture as we knw it?

And language is, f curse, a means fr cmmunicating with thers, but it is als a means fr telling the difference between yu and thers.
