Run by Sciety fr Science, Regenern Science Talent Search is a premier science and math cmpetitin fr high-schl senirs. One f the winners f this year is 17-year-ldE than Wng, wh tries t imprve existing technlgy. His fcus: airplanes.
Nearly all planes have a tail. The tail keeps the plane’s nse frm suddenly changing directin during a turn. The structure adds stability but weighs the plane dwn. Tailless-designed airplane wings culd serve the same functin as the tail, as well as cutting the envirnmental cst f air travel. But there’s a catch. Thse wings must twist(弯曲) in a very precise way that makes them hard t prduce.
Ethan became fascinated by this kind f airplane design when he saw a vide f NASA’s Prandtl-D aircraft gliding gracefully thrugh the air withut a tail. “I just thught that was really cl,” says Ethan. He wndered if he culd find a simpler way t achieve the same tailless flight.
“Essentially what I did was just trial and errr,” Ethan says. Using a cmputer mdel f an airplane wing, he adjusted the angle f twist alng the wing until it culd achieve tailless flight. Usually, such a wing requires a cntinuus distributin f wing twist. But he culd achieve a similar effect with wings that had just a few sectins f twist. “It’s super easy t make,” Ethan says.
In his garage, Ethan built mdel airplanes using rubber materials and packing tape ttes this design. “Seeing the plane in the air was pretty cl,” Ethan says. “It just flew really, really well.”
Lighter, mre efficient planes culd pen the dr t ther air travel innvatins. “It’s been a lng-term gal f mine t build a slar plane that can fly thrugh the day pwered by slar panels n its wings,” Ethan says. “It is abslutely pssible fr a really efficient plane.”
T ther teens wh have big engineering ideas t explre, Ethan always says, “Dn’t ever give up.” Even when sme machinery feels impssible t understand, it help stre member that the wrld’s greatest inventrs are nly human, t. “Als, just make sure yu lve whatever yu d,” Ethan adds. “That’ll make pursuing everything a lt easier.”
24.What is ne advantage f the tailless airplane?
    A.It makes aircraft design easier.
    B.It is envirnmentally friendly.
    C.It reduces prductin csts.
    D.It prmtes flight stability.
25.What drew Ethan’s attentin t the tailless airplane design?
    A.The breakthrugh in aircraft materials.
B.The flight f an aircraft in a vide.
    C.The prize fr riginal design.
    D.The desire fr innvatin.
26.In Ethan’s pinin, what help inventrs realize their dreams?
    A.Ambitin and efficiency.
    B.Enthusiasm and respnsibility.
    C.Passin and determinatin.
    D.Cnfidence and independence.

Many industries are facing a shrtage f labur. Warehusing has grwn rapidly. And rbts are nw indispensable, picking items ff shelves and helping peple pack an expnentially rising numbers f bxes. They are even beginning t walk slwly alng sme pavements, delivering gds r fd right t peple’s drs. Having mre rbts t bst prductivity wuld be a gd thing.
And yet many peple fear that rbts will destry jbs. A paper in 2013 by ecnmists at Oxfrd University was widely misinterpreted as meaning that 47% f American jbs were at risk f being autmated.
In fact, cncerns abut mass unemplyment because f rbts are verblwn. The evidence suggests rbts will be ultimately beneficial fr labur markets. A Yale University study fund that an increase f ne rbt unit per 1,000 wrkers bsted a cmpany’s emplyment in Japan. Research frm the Bank f Krea fund that ntarizatin mved jbs away frm manufacturing int ther sectrs, but that there was n decrease in verall vacancies(空缺).Anther study,by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute f Technlgy and clleagues elsewhere, lked at Finnish firms and cncluded that their use f advanced technlgies led t increases in hiring.
Fr all that, the march f the rbts will bring big changes t wrkplaces. The skills and firms that are rewarded will shift,t.But that need nt be the disaster many fear. One suppsed example f “bad autmatin” is self-service checkuts in supermarkets because they displace human wrkers. Checkut staff wh retrain t help custmers pick items frm aisles may well find that dealing with peple in need is mre rewarding than spending all day scanning barcdes.
Certainly, sme peple will be n the lsing end f change even as the rbts make sciety as a whle better ff. One lessn frm the freewheeling glbalizatin f the 1990s and 2000s is that the grwth in trade that was verwhelmingly beneficial triggered a plitical backlash(强烈抵制)because the lsers felt left behind. That is ne mre reasn why firms and gvernments wuld d well t recgnize the value f retraining and lifelng learning. As jbs change, wrkers shuld be helped t acquire new skills, including hw t wrk with and manage the rbts that will increasingly be their clleagues.
The ptential gains frm the rbt revlutin have just started. It wn’t be the plt in sme films where the rbts fight against their human masters and cause mass unemplyment.

A.T prve that rbts will nt be a disaster.
B.T remind us f the big changes at wrkplaces.
C.T illustrate checkut staff will scan barcdes slwly.
D.T tell firms the value f retraining and lifelng learning.
    29.Accrding t the authr,what will happen because f ntarizatin?
A.It will push lsers t leave behind.
B.Rbts may lead t mass unemplyment.
C.Peple will help rbts t gain new skills.
D.Rbts and peple may becme c-wrkers.

B.n evidence shws that rbts will destry jbs
C.ntarizatin will quickly bst mass emplyment
D.peple have benefited a lt frm the rbt revlutin

During a festival in Rwanda, Ellen Reid’s audi experience Sundwalk was shared in a hpeful discussin abut music, parks and mental health. These are a few f the things I have helped bring t life ver the years, wrking at the intersectin f scientific research, the arts and advcacy t supprt science in slving glbal health challenges.
Science is key t addressing these issues. But it isn’t the nly key. T achieve its ptential and fr its advances t be implemented and reach all wh culd benefit, science depends n trust and gd relatinships. Peple might nt always see science as relevant, trustwrthy r meaningful t their lives. There are reasns why sme see science as having a chequered past, frm nuclear weapns t eugenics, and are therefre uninterested in, r suspicius f, what it prpses. Others feel excluded by the incmprehensibility f hyper specialist knwledge.
In its capacity t build upn and test an evidence base, science is pwerful, but researchers and funders haven’t been as gd at ensuring this evidence base respnds t the needs and interests f diverse cmmunities, r infrms plicy makers t take actin. Science might be perceived as distancing itself frm the persnal, the petic and the plitical, yet it is precisely these qualities that can be mst influential when it cmes t public interest in atpic r hw a gvernment priritizes a decisin.
A mving stry well tld can be mre memrable than a list f facts. This is where the arts cme in. Artists can give us different perspectives with which t cnsider and reimagine the wrld tgether. They can redress the prclaimed bjectivity in science by bringing stries —subjectivities —int the picture, and these can help fster a sense f cnnectin and hpe.
In 2012, I set up artist residencies in medical research centres arund the wrld. Bui was attached t the Oxfrd University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam. The head f the research team was delighted, finding that Bui, as a Vietnamese artist, had license t be in, and t share useful insights frm, villages where infectius disease researchers weren’t welcme. Six years later, I led Wellcme’s Cntagius Cities prgram, which established artist residencies wrldwide t supprt lcally led explratins f epidemic preparedness. The recent pandemic made this wrk mre nticeable, and has infrmed ur Mindscapes prgram which is currently sharing experiences f mental health thrugh the wrk f artists.
With pandemic, climate and mental health crises upn us, rising inequality and what feels like an increasingly brken wrld, never has there been mre need t build and nurture hpeful and imaginative spaces t grw human cnnectin and shared purpse fr the cmmn gd. Science and the arts can wrk hand in glve t achieve this.

根据第一段“At a museum in Vietnam, Lena Bui’s film Where Birds Dance Their Last reflected n the beauty and vulnerability f Vietnamese feather farms after Bird Flu. During a festival in Rwanda, Ellen Reid’s audi experience Sundwalk was shared in a hpeful discussin abut music, parks and mental health. 32.词句猜测题。根据第二段“Peple might nt always see science as relevant, trustwrthy r meaningful t their lives.(人们可能并不总是认为科学与他们的生活相关、值得信赖或有意义)”以及画线词后文“frm nuclear weapns t eugenics, and are therefre uninterested in, r suspicius f, what it prpses”可知,人们可能并不总是认为科学与他们的生活相关、值得信赖或有意义,所以有些人认为科学的过去有好有坏,从核武器到优生学,因此对科学提出的东西不感兴趣或怀疑是有原因的。故画线词意思是“有好有坏”。故选B。
33.推理判断题。根据第四段“Artists can give us different perspectives with which t cnsider and reimagine the wrld tgether. They can redress the prclaimed bjectivity in science by bringing stries — subjectivities — int the picture, and these can help fster a sense f cnnectin and hpe.(艺术家可以给我们提供不同的视角,让我们一起思考和重新想象这个世界。他们可以通过将故事(主观性)带入画面来纠正科学中所宣称的客观性,这有助于培养一种联系感和希望感)”可推知,作者认同艺术帮助人们建立联系。故选D。
34.主旨大意题。根据第一段“These are a few f the things I have helped bring t life ver the years, wrking at the intersectin f scientific research, the arts and advcacy t supprt science in slving glbal health challenges.(这些是我多年来帮助实现的一些事情,在科学研究、艺术和倡导的交叉领域工作,以支持科学解决全球健康挑战)”以及第四段“Artists can give us different perspectives with which t cnsider and reimagine the wrld tgether. They can redress the prclaimed bjectivity in science by bringing stries — subjectivities — int the picture, and these can help fster a sense f cnnectin and hpe.(艺术家可以给我们提供不同的视角,让我们一起思考和重新想象这个世界。他们可以通过将故事(主观性)带入画面来纠正科学中所宣称的客观性,这有助于培养一种联系感和希望感)”以及最后一段“Science and the arts can wrk hand in glve t achieve this.(科学和艺术可以携手合作来实现这一目标)”结合文章主要论述了作者认为科学可以与艺术相结合,并通过列举事实证明了这一点。可知,A选项“艺术对科学的价值”最符合文章标题。故选A。

A Way Out f Scial Anxiety: Vlunteering and Acts f Kindness
As a scially anxius intrvert, I can attest(证明)t the benefits f serving thers thrugh vlunteering in my cmmunity.
A vlunteer jb desn’t need t require stepping int a busy rm full f 100 peple at a schl r hspital. 35 This kind f wrk is much mre suitable and agreeable fr intrverts.
36 When I help elders r peple with disabilities wh are mre islated and lnelier than I am, I feel my nervusness and self-cnsciusness disappear. My scial awkwardness lses its grip n me when I’m fcused n helping smene else rather than myself r my scial perfrmance. Unlike shwing up at a jb interview, business meeting, r speaking engagement, wrking as a vlunteer with peple in need takes the sptlight away frm being measured r judged. 37
Scial scientists have an apt name fr stressful scial situatins where we need t perfrm and wuld likely be judged r evaluated. The “scial-evaluative threat” is particularly threatening fr peple with scial anxiety as stress hrmnes rapidly increase. Any time we are in evaluative situatins where we are judged by thers, we face this scial-evaluative threat and endure a sudden rush f stress hrmnes that increase anxiety. 38 Yet when we are in situatins where we are ffering casual acts f kindness r nurturing thers we tend t feel less threatened r judged by thers. Helping thers and sharing simple acts f kindness des nt pse such a scial-evaluative threat, but instead, calms and sthes us. Neurscientists have studied the warm glw f ding gd that makes us feel gd.
“Kindness may help scially anxius peple,” says Dr. Lynn Alden, a psychlgy prfessr at the University f British Clumbia. 39 She fund that acts f kindness may help t cunter the scially anxius persn’s fear f negative evaluatin by prmting mre psitive perceptins and expectatins f hw ther peple will respnd.
A.Sme peple are naturally reserved while thers are rather utging.
B.In scial anxiety disrder, fear and anxiety lead t avidance which can disrupt ur life.
C.Indeed, my wn act f kindness has always been a sure bet t bring me ut f my shell.
D.Instead, my vlunteer service cnsists f quiet ne-n-ne visits with islated lder adults.
E.When I am giving my free time t help thers, I feel truly liberated in my missin t serve.
F.High-perfrmance events such as public speaking r jb interviews can be really unbearable.
G.She and her clleagues cnducted a study with 115 undergraduate students wh had reprted high levels f scial anxiety.

38.根据上文“Any time we are in evaluative situatins where we are judged by thers, we face this scial-evaluative threat and endure a sudden rush f stress hrmnes that increase anxiety.

If yu feel like yu may be a peple-pleaser, yu’re nt alne. In tday’s highly-cnnected wrld, we have a grwing bsessin (痴迷) with being liked and needing t please thers. Peple seek t please thers fr varius reasns, including aviding cnflicts, securing feelings f being needed, and reducing fears f abandnment. And they are frced t use agreeableness as self-defense.
Peple-pleasing behavir can lead t mental and physical health prblems such as fear f rejectin, frustratin, anger, addictins, headaches, stmach prblems, and high bld pressure. It can als result in weak bundaries, prblems with decisin-making and dependency. Therefre, it’s imprtant t recgnize and vercme yur wn peple-pleasing behavirs. Here are sme simple exercises that yu can start wrking n tday.
Learn t lve yur wn cmpany. Trust that peple will nt abandn yu, even if yu dn’t drp everything fr them. Believing yu are lvable fr wh yu are, nt what yu d, means knwing that peple will still be there fr yu even if yu d nt always search fr ways t please them. Practice this by ging t a mvie r restaurant alne.
Value the plans made with yurself. They are as imprtant as plans yu make with ther peple. Otherwise, yu are sending a message t yur brain that a plan yu make with yurself des nt hld as much value. Dn’t break lng-r shrt-term plans yu make with yurself, whether it’s ging t the gym r studying fr an exam.
Say “n” when necessary. If yu’re a peple-pleaser, yu may find it hard t say “n” because yu feel it cmes acrss as cruel r uncaring. But it abslutely des nt have t. Be clear, be direct, and use “I” statements. Try statements like: “I wuld really lve t be able t help yu, but unfrtunately, I’m already cmmitted at that time.” By cnsistently integrating these strategies int yur life, yu’ll break yur peple-pleasing habits and develp mre healthy, interdependent relatinships.
    40.What is a peple-pleaser like?

41.Besides mental and physical prblems, what ther prblems may a peple-pleaser suffer frm?

42.Please decide which part is false in the fllwing statement, then underline it and explain why.
If yu dn’t want t be a peple-pleaser, yu shuld lve being with thers, value the plans made with yurself, and decline thers’requests when necessary.

43.What d yu think f the behavir f pleasing thers? (In abut 40 wrds)

40.A peple-pleaser has a (grwing) bsessin with being liked and needing t please thers.
A peple-pleaser may suffer frm weak bundaries, prblems with decisin-makingand dependency. 42.If yu dn’t want t be a peple-pleaser, (yu shuld) lve being with thers, value the plans made with yurself, and decline thers’ requests when necessary. Yu shuld learn t lve yur wn cmpany.
43.I think it’s harmful t mental health. Always bsessed with being liked and ignring the true needs f ur wn, we wuld lse urselves and tie ur wrthiness t thers’ apprval. Once we fail t satisfy all, anxiety and frustratin wuld creep int ur minds, causing mental health issues.
根据第一段的“If yu feel like yu may be a peple-pleaser, yu’re nt alne. In tday’s highly-cnnected wrld, we have a grwing bsessin (痴迷) with being liked and needing t please thers.(如果你觉得自己是一个讨人喜欢的人,那么你并不孤单。在当今这个高度互联的世界里,我们越来越痴迷于被喜欢,也越来越需要取悦他人。)”可知,取悦他人的人越来越痴迷于被人喜欢,需要取悦他人。故答案为A peple-pleaser has a (grwing) bsessin with being liked and needing t please thers.
根据第二段的“Peple-pleasing behavir can lead t mental and physical health prblems such as fear f rejectin, frustratin, anger, addictins, headaches, stmach prblems, and high bld pressure. It can als result in weak bundaries, prblems with decisin-making and dependency.(取悦他人的行为会导致精神和身体健康问题,比如害怕被拒绝、沮丧、愤怒、上瘾、头痛、胃病和高血压。它还可能导致边界薄弱,决策问题和依赖性。)”可知,除了精神和身体上的问题,取悦他人的人还可能会边界薄弱,决策问题和依赖性。故答案为A peple-pleaser may suffer frm weak bundaries, prblems with decisin-makingand dependency.
,第四段的“Value the plans made with yurself.(重视自己制定的计划。)” If yu dn’t want t be a peple-pleaser, (yu shuld) lve being with thers, value the plans made with yurself, and decline thers’ requests when necessary. Yu shuld learn t lve yur wn cmpany.
根据第二段的“Peple-pleasing behavir can lead t mental and physical health prblems such as fear f rejectin, frustratin, anger, addictins, headaches, stmach prblems, and high bld pressure. It can als result in weak bundaries, prblems with decisin-making and dependency.(取悦他人的行为会导致精神和身体健康问题,比如害怕被拒绝、沮丧、愤怒、上瘾、头痛、胃病和高血压。它还可能导致边界薄弱,决策问题和依赖性。)”并结合我个人的看法可知,我认为取悦他人对心理健康有害。总是沉迷于被人喜欢,而忽视了自己真正的需求,我们会迷失自我,把自己的价值与别人的认可联系在一起。一旦我们不能满足所有人,焦虑和沮丧就会潜入我们的脑海,导致心理健康问题,故答案为I think it’s harmful t mental health. Always bsessed with being liked and ignring the true needs f ur wn, we wuld lse urselves and tie ur wrthiness tthers’ apprval. Once we fail t satisfy all, anxiety and frustratin wuld creep int ur minds, causing mental health issues.
